Providing a safe, nurturing child care experience
When Mikey* first started in our Family Y child care program, he was a very busy, aggressive boy. His mother
and father were concerned with his behaviour and wanted him to be around other children before he started
Kindergarten.
He began attending the program during the mornings. Our staff worked with Mikey. We were persistent,
patient and used consistent answers with him, like “gentle hands” and “nice hugs.”
After a few months Mikey began staying for lunch. His mother informed us that she didn’t expect him to eat
since he is a picky eater; but she wanted him to be involved in the group setting. At first it was a challenge to
get him to sit at the table and try the food; however with gentle encouragement day by day, he began to eat
and enjoy lunch with the group.
Mikey has continued to develop in the program. It was an interesting and fulfilling journey. We saw major
changes in his behavior, his sensory skills and the way he communicated with others.
Our YMCA Child Care programs aim to provide a safe, nurturing experience for all children to reach their full
