PENGUINS

CLIMATE change is being blamed for a fall in
numbers of chinstrap penguins, like this one.
Now British scientists are asking for
your help in studying what is happening
to them.
A team from Oxford University
launched Penguin Watch this week.
It’s the largest Antarctic citizen science
project in the world.
They have put 75 cameras all over
Antarctica, each of which takes a
picture every hour. But they haven’t got
enough people to look at all the images.
Lead scientist Dr Tom Hart says:
“We can’t do this work on our own,
and every penguin that people click
on and count on the website – that’s
‘ZebrasLearnALanguage’
all information that tells us what’s
happening at each nest, and what’s
happening over time.”
He is also encouraging school groups
to adopt their own colony, following
how they’re getting on, while learning
about Antarctica at the same time.
The team’s work has already shown a
link between climate change and a fall
in chinstrap and Adélie penguins in the
area. They want to understand exactly
what is happening so they can try to
build numbers up again.

WHAT’S THE FUSS ABOUT pANAMA?
The secrets that have come out show that some powerful
people might have been trying to avoid paying all their
taxes. The information came from a company in a small
country called Panama. The company was paid to look
after some well-known people’s money. But now there are
questions being asked about whether these people were
using tax havens, like Panama, on purpose so they didn’t
have to pay tax on their money. Continues on page 4.
