SJV & Associates The Lawless Ledger Issue Q3/ 2010 Monthly Webinar Series – Human Expertise Special points of interest: • Autumn Events • Football This past September, SJV hosted its first ever “Client Webinar”, dedicated to educating our client base and other industry contacts regarding current, relevant, and poignant topics in the background screening industry. The goal is to continue this into an ongoing series, with monthly or bi-monthly installments. The first session was dedicated to a topic that virtually every client of SJV has experienced issues with, ‘Clerk Assisted Searches’. In an effort to alleviate some of the strain and stress related to areas where clerk assistance causes delays, the session outlined the primary reasons that clerk assistance occurs in the first place, so clients can understand why its needed in the first place. • Birth/Anni • Halloween • Labor Day • Recipe Inside this issue: Fall Festivals Blood Drive 2 College Football 2 Vital Statistics 2 Labor Day 3 Cider 3 Horror Movie Quotes 3 Halloween Word Puzzle 4 by Vince Brodt accurately predict when a clerk-assisted search will be concluded. The final point of interest was simply the areas where clerk assistance actually occurs across the U.S. Attendees of the webinar were furnished with a spreadsheet, broken down by state and county, regarding the exact jurisdictions where mandatory clerk assistance of some kind occurs. Also covered on the webinar were strategies for communicating and managing delays from clerk assistance, all the way from the investigator in the field, to the end user that originally ordered the background check in the first place. Forty seven pints were collected this year, topping our previous record of 35 in 2009. We had a great mix of repeat donors and first timers, as well as current and past employees, family members, and walk in donors that really made the day extra special for all involved. Special thanks go to our property manager for allowing us the use of a vacant office, and Michele and Katie for helping schedule and organize the event. The blood drive has become an annual event because blood donations have been so very important to members of the SJV family, including Scott’s daughter Kasey who was born with a heart defect and Katie Donley, who has undergone kidney transplants. These personal connections with the Red Cross have made this an especially poignant event for all of us, and the yearly rise in donors and pints of blood collected is truly gratifying. SJV strives to be involved with giving back to the community, and we are grateful to all who came to donate this year. Remember-the American Red Cross is never more than 72 hours away from running out of blood. College Football 2010 Written By: Renee Clements and Heather Corrubia The football season is off to a rocky start for The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. Both UGA and Georgia Tech are 1-1.Georgia’s star wide receiver A.J. Green has been suspended for four games and won’t play again until the Colorado game. UGA is really going to have to put forth their best efforts to stop Arkansas and Mississippi State from putting points on the board because without Green winning the SEC title has become even more difficult. Georgia welcomed red shirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray this season in hopes that he turns out to be much better under pressure when compared to last years quarterback Joe Cox. The next game is scheduled for Saturday September 18th against Arkansas. Although I must have high hopes for Georgia to win against Arkansas, if Georgia doesn’t win on the 18th the season will be over for them. The Ramblin’ Wreck of GA Tech has lost their BCS ranking early; falling to unranked Kansas in a close game this past weekend. The Jackets started the season by stomping South Carolina State where quarterback Josh Nesbitt ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns. However, if the Jackets hope to get their BCS ranking back they will have to put up a strong win against ACC rival North Carolina this week- SJV BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES SJV Anniversaries 2003 Nick Colleen 2004 Betsy Carrie 2005 Nancy Eddie 2006 Renee Nicole M 2008 Heather Rachel Warren 2009 Michele Page 2 Birthdays July Nicole M 21st August Scott 14th Colleen 19th September Matt 2nd Carrie 16th Jeff 25th Heather 30th The Lawless Ledger WHY WE CELEBRATE LABOR DAY by Michele Spence Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September and is a United States federal holiday. The federal holiday became official in 1894 during the Pullman Strike when the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals killed a number of workers. President Grover Cleveland made the labor movement as top political priority. Just six days after the strike, Congress agreed to make Labor Day a national holiday. The celebration of Labor Day is outlined in the first proposal as a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations,” followed by a festival for the workers and their families. Most Americans symbolizes Labor Day as the end of summer. Many people have picnics, firework displays, water sports, and public events.
