The required reading selections are listed for the 20142015 school year. Students are required to begin their
outside reading during the summer.
Evaluations of each book in the core lists and each outside
reading selection will be accomplished during the school
year by one of these methods:

Summer Reading Assignment All students enrolled in English 9 are required to read one of the following novels: God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis Thunder of Heaven by Tedd Dekker Students will be assessed on their summer reading during the first week of school. This assessment will be a test grade. Each student is to do a three-­‐part project on the book. 1) Read fully and annotate key plotline elements of the selected book. 2) Turn in signed Honor Statement. 3) Prepare and submit a type-­‐written, original description of the plotline and one of the characters. This will include four paragraphs (4-­‐5 sentences each). The first paragraph will discuss the conflict, the second paragraph will discuss the climax, and the third will discuss the resolution. The fourth paragraph will describe one of the major characters. The written description must be in New Times Roman font, 12 point type, and double-­‐spaced. The terms conflict, climax, and resolution are defined as follows: CONFLICT= MAN VS. MAN MAN VS. NATURE MAN VS. SOCIETY MAN VS. SELF MAN VS. GOD CLIMAX= TURNING POINT IN THE ACTION RESOLUTION= HOW THE CONFLICT IS FINALLY DECIDED ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. Part 1 will be due during the first week of school. Parts 2 and 3 will be due during Semester 1.
