Environment with
Schoolwide SEL
Educators can foster students’ success and connection to school by implementing
social-emotional learning (SEL) schoolwide. The Second Step program and Principal
Toolkit help create a cohesive environment for teaching, reinforcing skills, and
providing teachers, counselors, and principals consistent SEL language and strategies
to use with students. This strong foundation supports students in building important
social-emotional skills that will help them achieve in school and throughout their lives.
A Cohesive Environment
A common frame of reference is key to creating a
cohesive environment and schoolwide success.
Marti McVannel-Erwin, a counselor in Cape
Coral, FL says, “I use the same Second Step
‘buzz words’ in the classroom, the cafeteria, and
even with parents. We can practice these skills
as a team so we’re all on the same page. The
students get it—they know how to listen now.”
When language like “belly breathing,” “calmingdown skills,” and “self-talk” is used throughout the
school, children are prompted to use their socialemotional skills both in and out of the classroom.

Staff Training
With the Second Step Staff Training, educators
are introduced to and gain a background in
social-emotional learning. And the Principal
Toolkit includes all-staff orientations, staff meeting
activities, and handouts that highlight key concepts
and inspire educators to model and reinforce
Second Step skills daily. Combined, they help bring
staff together with the common goal of creating a
positive environment for all students.

Model Behavior
Tools for a United School
Social-emotional skills are valuable for students,
but learning them isn’t always as formal as a
planned lesson or science experiment. Since
children constantly watch and learn from the
adults in their lives, it’s important that teachers,
counselors, and school leaders model good
social-emotional skills for students. Principal
Kari Kirchner of Lexington, KY says, “The staff is
following through with the lessons taught during
the SEL instruction. The Second Step skills being
nurtured in the students are also being modeled
by most staff.”
Beyond teaching the Second Step program every
week in the classroom, it’s important to involve
the whole school to implement SEL successfully.
The Principal Toolkit helps infuse SEL throughout
the school and reinforce skills. Scripts for
assemblies, weekly morning announcements,
and the Talk-It-Over Tool allow school leaders to
be involved by emphasizing important Second
Step skills beyond the classroom. Chicago Principal
Crystal Bell says, “When principals embrace the
Second Step program with excitement, their
schools will embrace it too. It’s that simple.”
”
Mary Todd Elementary in Lexington, KY
implemented the Second Step program
schoolwide and saw behavior referrals fall by
more than half in the first year. Principal Kari
Kirchner says that since implementation, “Our
test scores have risen the last two consecutive
years,” noting, “I think that the SEL plus more
consistent schoolwide expectations are making
a marked improvement in our academics.”
Beyond improved academics, Kirchner states,
“The school culture has improved, and the
students’ behavior is indicative of a strong SEL
program and consistent expectations in both
the common areas and the classrooms.”
Bringing Your School Together
Educators everywhere can create a foundation
for learning by implementing schoolwide SEL
with the Second Step program. Our programs
combined with your educators can increase
school connectedness and set the groundwork
for lifelong success.

Building a Strong Future Together
With the help of teachers, counselors, and educators, the Second Step program is building a strong
foundation for a new generation of socially and emotionally savvy children. Through the program, these
children gain the skills and know-how to be kind, caring, and responsible members of society. Today
students learn to solve problems on the playground, and tomorrow they’ll manage conflicts in the workplace
and everyday life.
The Second Step program teaches children integral social-emotional skills. Fun stories, games, music videos,
songs, and lessons make problem solving, feelings, and calming down concepts easy to remember. With
little prep time and easy classroom integration, the Second Step program is ideal for educators looking to
give their students the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
