LION SCOUT PILOT INFORMATION LION SCOUTS Lions is a pilot program of the Boy Scouts of America for Kindergarten-age boys. Cub Scouting is a program of the Boy Scouts of America, whose mission is to help young people build character, learn citizenship, and develop personal fitness, become effective leaders and have fun in the outdoors. Cub Scouting focuses on boys in the first through fifth grades (or from ages 7 through 10). The Lion Pilot Project is exploring the value of a Kindergarten-age program. OVERVIEW Lions is a family program. A youth and his parent or caring adult partner join Scouting and participate together. A group of six to eight boys and their adult partners meet together in a group called a Den. Dens will meet twice per month. They have fun participating in Den meetings and outings while making memories together. PROGRAM The Lion Pilot program encourages boys to learn and explore through hands on, high energy activities. Each adult partner takes a turn at leading a pre-planned den meeting or outing during the year. Most meetings and outings are approximately 45 minutes in length. RECOGNITION Boys are recognized for their accomplishments as they work toward the Lion badge. The Lion badge is earned by completing five adventures. Adventures are completed during the den meetings and outings. The Lion Guide is an experienced Cub Scout Leader. He or she will lead the first den meeting of the year. The Lion Guide will help each adult partner lead one of the following meetings. The den meeting plans are provided in the Lion Parent and Leader Guidebook. Adult Partner The adult partner participates with the Lion Scout in fun meetings and outings. And takes turns with other adult partners to lead a Den meeting or outing. Lion Guide A Lion Guide is a volunteer leader who provides direct support to your Lion Den and helps each adult partner lead one of the den meetings. Lion Coordinator The Lion Coordinator is a volunteer leader who provides direct support to Lion Guides in multiple Cub Scout packs in your community. LION SCOUT PILOT INFORMATION cont’d Cubmaster The Cubmaster serves as the “ringmaster” for the monthly pack meeting. The pack meeting is an event where all of the dens in a Cub Scout pack come together for fun activities and awards. Lion dens are more independent and attend only two or three special pack meetings as Lions. UNIFORM The uniform for Lions is designed to be simple and inexpensive – The Lion T-Shirt is the standard uniform for boys in the Lion program. Adults may wear the above uniform or follow the pack’s uniform custom. Lion Program Materials will be available in the Quivira Council Service Center Scout Shop in July 5, 2016 so that participating units have enough lead time to prepare their Packs to properly to receive the incoming families. PARTICIPATION For a Pack to qualify to be considered for participation in the pilot program they must do the following prior to August Roundtables: 1. Discuss with the Pack Committee, ID and recruit the following leadership roles from within the current Pack leadership: a. Lion Coordinator- (optional) Can serve multiple packs) Pack Committee Member dedicated to making sure the Lions have necessary resources. b. Lion Guide – (mandatory) Will assist with hands-on program delivery to the Lions. This person will be teaching the adults as well as the youth and must have no other responsibilities in the Unit. This person must be an experienced den leader. 2. Contact the District Membership Chair or District Chair and provide the following: a. Name, phone and e-mail for both the Lion Guide and Lion Coordinator. i. This information is necessary for future District communications. 3. At minimum the Lion Guide must attend Lion training at one of the August Roundtables. You must pre-register using Council online registration system. It is highly recommended that the Cubmaster, Lion Coordinator, Lion Guide and any established Lion partners also attend. Units without a person pre-registered and in attendance at the training will not be considered for the Lion program. 4. Bring paperwork Complete the following paperwork and bring with you to the training to turn in. a. Lion Program Agreement (found on the website on the Lion page.) b. Adult Application and YPT certificate for the Lion Guide.
