CIVIL WAR STORIES. Lee`s Surrender at Appomattox Court House

CIVIL WAR STORIES.
Lee`s Surrender at Appomattox Court
House, Virginia. It was an April morning
three days after General Robert E. Lee had
surrendered to General U.S. Grant. The
Southern troops, led by General John B.
Gordon, a Mason, were marching in
columns towards the Northern troops who were
standing in formation waiting for the Southerners to
stack arms and fold their flags. Suddenly a shifting of
arms is heard. Gordon looked up with alarm. There
was nothing to fear. General Joshua Chamberlain had
ordered his troops to assume the position of "honor
answering honor." Immediately, the Confederate troops
snapped to attention and returned the honor. It was the
first act to heal the wounds of a nation that had spent
four years and 618,000 lives in civil war. That
command of "honor answering honor" was ordered by
a Mason. Major General Joshua Chamberlain was a
member of United Lodge #8, Brunswick, Maine. After
the war, he became Governor of Maine from 18661871 and
President of
Bowdoin College
from 1871-83.

Honorary Member.
Bro. Duncan Mulholland,
J.D. received a pleasant
surprise at our visit to Lodge
St. Enoch No. 1288 on 15th.
October. Bro. Stephen
Campbell, RWM of 1288
conferred Honorary
Membership on our Junior
Deacon. The RWM
explained that Bro. Duncan
had been a great supporter
of Lodge St. Enoch over
many years and was never
slow to assist the Lodge in any way he could. Bro. Duncan
being made an Honorary Member continues a family
connection with the Lodge, his father being Initiated in 1969
and his grandfather in 1941 . This honour presented to
Duncan is also an honour for our Lodge that one of our
Brethren should be recognised in this way. Apron Returns
Home. Bro. Stephen Campbell, RWM invited Bro. James L.
Jack ton explain the old apron that he was wearing at the
meeting. Bro. Jack explained that the apron belonged to his
late uncle Tom Jack, who had been Initiated into Lodge St.
Enoch age 18 in 1945 and had emigrated to Australia in
1949. Tom never returned home, having died in Australia
but his apron did return. Tom`s daughter Barbara visited
while on holiday last month and presented Jim with his
uncle`s apron . This was the first time in 65 years that this
Apron had been worn in Lodge St. Enoch.

Proposed trip to France 2016.
Bro. Stuart Jack, WJW has been researching members of
Lodge St. Bryde who fell in the First World War. He has to
date confirmed two of our Brethren. It has been proposed that
members of our Lodge visit the resting place in France and
pay our respects probably in 2016. Any Brother of our Lodge
who would like to visit please contact Stuart. Bro. Stuart has
set up a direct debit scheme so that members can pay
directly into the savings account for the trip.
If any Brother has any information, ie. The names of
members of family who were members of our Lodge who
gave their lives in the First World War, this information
would be of great help.
Memorial Lodge. Wednesday
12th. November. The Lodge
Office-bearers will confer an
E.A. Degree on one Candidate
and this will also be the “step
up” meeting at which the
Office-bearers step up one
place in Office. This format
worked very well last year and
the Office-bearers gained
experience of their new office
prior to the Installation. At this
meeting we will mark the
Centenary of the beginning of
WW1. The WJW has been
doing research into our
Members who fought in the
War and so far has identified 24 Brethren and 3 killed in
action, although the numbers will be much higher. The
short Service at the start of our meeting will be conducted
by Bro. Rev. Peter Price, Senior Provincial Grand Chaplain
and will also feature Bros. David Stark, Provincial Grand
Piper and Morris Smith Provincial Grand Organist.
