GEORGIA LEFT ME OUT “I’m scared to death to go sleep at night. I’m afraid I just won’t wake up. Medicaid expansion would help me tremendously.” Tracy from Augusta, GA Tracy is disabled and is unable to work. She has so far been unsuccessful in receiving disability benefits. She has severe back problems and other health problems, including a degenerative disc disorder, thrush requiring dentures, and an anxiety/panic disorder. Tracy has to live at home with her mother who pays for all their bills with her pension. She feels that she is a burden on her mother. At a recent check-up, Tracy was diagnosed with a heart problem which causes her heart to slow down close to a stop when she is sleeping. She’s afraid she’ll go to coverga.org consumerpostcard_r4.indd 1 sleep and never wake up. 3/9/16 10:52 AM FROM: STAMP NAME REQUIRED ADDRESS C I T Y S TAT E ZIP EMAIL I fall in the coverage gap too. When I had health insurance, I felt like a 1st rate citizen.” Henry from Savannah, GA Henry had to stop working as a truck driver in 2008 to take care of his diabetes and other health issues. He intended to return to driving once his health problems were under control, but he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and could not return to work. He is currently managing the cancer and diabetes along with several other severe health issues, including blood clots in his legs and lungs, and COPD. Although, he is able to get some of his care from a free clinic in Savannah, he has many unpaid medical bills. He must rely on his elderly mother to help pay some of coverga.org consumerpostcard_r4.indd 3 his costs, which he says is difficult because she lives on a fixed income. 3/9/16 10:52 AM FROM: STAMP NAME REQUIRED ADDRESS C I T Y S TAT E ZIP EMAIL I fall in the coverage gap too. It’s scary not to have employer coverage.” Lisa from Decatur, GA Lisa is the Executive Director of a non-profit organization in Georgia that legal advocacy for low-income women and girls. Lisa has major health needs, including a brain tumor and seizures, so having health coverage is literally life or death for her. She had ACA coverage, but her 2016 income will fall below the poverty line ($11,770) so she will lose the subsidy that made her coverage affordable. She would get a second job to help bring her income up, but her doctor wants her to stop working completely. She went to law school and became an attorney to help people in need, but now she cannot make enough coverga.org consumerpostcard_r4.indd 5 money to take care of her health needs. 3/9/16 10:52 AM FROM: STAMP NAME REQUIRED ADDRESS C I T Y S TAT E ZIP EMAIL I fall in the coverage gap too.
