Brukhim Habayim – ohcv ohfurc Welcome Tobin Family We would like to introduce you to Rabbi Robert and Lisa Tobin and their family: Avi (1), Ezra (4), Maya (6) and Yosef (6). Rabbi Tobin and Lisa, who will be married 10 years in August, recently bought a home in Leawood, Kansas and are in the process of settling in and getting to know our congregation. L-R, F-B: Ezra, Avi, Yosef, Rabbi Tobin, Maya, and Lisa Tobin Rabbi Tobin loves being a rabbi and his mission is to be part of our congregants’ lives, particularly in our moments of greatest sorrow or joy. His favorite quote is: “Talmud Torah k’neged kulam” (the study of Torah is paramount). Rabbi Tobin loves to teach and seeks to work with people who want to bring Judaism to life in our community. His strong background in family programming, community leadership, teaching, preaching and counseling will be an asset in guiding our congregation. The Rabbi’s hobbies include Torah study, baseball, college basketball, history, astronomy, biology, chess, movies, and being a husband and father. Lisa Tobin was born in Central America and brought up in Park Slope, Brooklyn. She and the Rabbi met at The Kane Street Synagogue in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, where they were married. Lisa studied psychology at Brooklyn College. She has also earned three Master’s Degrees: Master’s in Education from NYU, Master’s in Social Work from the University of Maryland, and Master’s in Judaic Studies from Baltimore Hebrew University. Lisa also holds a certificate in Jewish Communal Service from the Darrell D. Friedman Institute for Jewish Communal Service in Baltimore. Lisa has a background in summer camping and educational evaluation as well. She has worked as a community planner for the Jewish Federation in Baltimore, MD and coordinated a volunteer literacy program called Reading Partners for the Stamford, CT Jewish Federation. She enjoys musical theater and has a goal of taking the entire family to Israel. Maya and Yosef will attend the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in the fall and Ezra will attend the Rose Family Early Education Center at Beth Shalom. July 2008 Kansas City participants in Israel as a part of March of the Living 2008 The March of the Living is a program I had heard about for many years, but never dreamed that I would actually be a participant. In April 2008, I was lucky enough to be one of 59 students from the Kansas City area and one of 12,000 from around the world to travel to both Poland and Israel. Our group consisted of approximately 85 students from Kansas City, Chicago, San Antonio, Seattle and New Jersey. The first few days we explored Auschwitz I and Majdanek. We also viewed the monuments at Plazhow, Belzec, and Treblinka. It was hard to grasp the meaning of these sights when the sun was shining on a beautiful spring day. Everything changed on the fourth day of the trip. Our group traveled back to Auschwitz I for the March of the Living. Assembled with 12,000 Jews from around the world, we began the 1.9-mile march from Auschwitz I to Auschwitz II, or Birkenau. As we marched in rows of eight, some in silence, others in solemn song, the day turned from sunny to grey and cold. After 30 minutes of walking, the train station appeared in front of us. People were putting signs of loved ones on the tracks, some were taking pictures, and others were just reflecting. As we walked through the train station and into Birkenau, anxiety mounted. Everything we had learned for 18 years we were now experiencing first hand. “The emotions were so intense because we were actually there and not just looking at pictures,” explained Seth Hermanson, a participant from Kansas City. We completed our Poland experience by observing Shabbat in Warsaw. After Havdalah, we made our way to the Warsaw airport. We were never so excited to finally arrive in Israel. One of the highlights was to spend Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day, in the Holy Land. The March of the Living was truly the March of a Lifetime. Calling All Mah Jongg-ers A new Monday night Mah Jongg group is now forming. Everyone is welcome. Rabbi Cohen has been a wonderful mentor. And I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Joel Krichiver and Hazzan Menes. I understand synagogue life now in a way that I did not when I first came and am so grateful for all I have learned. I have had an opportunity to learn about the role and responsibilities of a pulpit rabbi, including pastoral responsibilities, and am familiar with the many different settings in which a rabbi can teach. Lifecycle events no longer intimidate me and I have had the opportunity to learn about, and work within, the organizational structure of a synagogue. When I first came, I was particularly anxious about delivering sermons. I was comfortable teaching in a classroom, but the sanctuary intimidated me. Since then I have developed a philosophy for preaching, deciding to organize my divre Torah around three general themes: believing, behaving and belonging. I have long been attracted to Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan’s idea that we must know what we believe, how we are to behave and where we connect to the Jewish people. I believe that as I begin my career as a senior rabbi, this will be the framework that guides me as I work with the professional staff and lay community to create a synagogue where we are seeking God, creating community and doing mitzvot. I leave Beth Shalom with warm feelings and am grateful for all the learning opportunities that were made available to me. I hope the next chapter in the congregation’s life is a good one and that you will all help Rabbi Tobin in his transition. Ken joins me in wishing you a restful and relaxing summer. Rabbi Amy Wallk Katz [email protected] | 913-647-7295 Tisha B’Av Reminds Us The month of July encompasses the greater part of the “Three Weeks,” the time when we are bein hametzarim, “in the straits.” This is the period between the Seventeenth of Tammuz and Tisha B’Av. We are under siege, our walls have been breached, and the Temple will soon be destroyed. Of course, this we know from our vantage point of the future. While we are in the straits, we only hope that a miracle will come to save us. I try to imagine what the Israelites were doing, what they were singing, what they were praying, in those three weeks. Was it all despair and kinot? Were there moments of elation, belief that this was the precursor to the coming of the Messiah? I imagine a whirlwind of emotion, fear, despair, surrender, defiance, and hope. Many of us live in that world of turmoil every day. The three-week period is not simply a time of remembrance. It is also a time to experience that confusion of emotion. As Shabbat is a taste of the world to come, so the Three Weeks are a bitter reminder of the world as it is. If we are to deal with the pain of our world, the loss and illness, which must come to all of us, at one time or another, we must practice descending into that pit, going to those dark places, and ultimately finding our way out. As Jews, we have collectively descended into the darkest of places, abandoned by the world, seemingly abandoned by God. Yet we have found a way out. Ultimately, we have found a way back to Israel. Ultimately, finding clarity, finding Torah. July 2008 www.bethshalomkc.org | 913-647-7279 Transition Committee Activities Continue Rabbi Tobin will begin his affiliation with Congregation Beth Shalom on July 1. He has been collaborating with a Transition Committee in order to help him integrate into the congregation and the community. Most important will be his orientation with the many families in the synagogue and becoming acclimated to the rhythms and culture of Beth Shalom. There will be small social get-togethers with havurot, religious school, camp and nursery school families, multi-generational families and Sisterhood members as well. If you wish to host an informal gathering at your home, please contact Diane Azorsky at [email protected] or 469-0515. Rabbi Tobin is also looking forward to teaching in many venues, including an Elul Institute as preparation for the High Holidays and other study sessions. Another major task will be his integration with the staff. Rabbi Tobin will also work to ensure he has a significant role as spiritual leader and teacher in all services during the High Holidays and to touch the entire congregation. Another venue will be Rabbi Tobin’s orientation into the greater Kansas City Jewish Community and the general community. He will make connections with all the rabbis and organizations. The last area of focus is the history of Beth Shalom, to learn about where we have come from in the past 125 years. He hopes to do this through listening as we tell our stories of our families’ involvement in Beth Shalom. Diane Azorsky, Committee Chairperson said, “Everyone is very excited to work with Rabbi Tobin and his family. We can hardly wait to welcome his family into our Beth Shalom family. I have been so impressed by his enthusiasm, warmth, and his strategic thinking, which I know will be contagious throughout our congregation.” The committee energetically working on the transition includes: Diane Azorsky, chairperson, Michael Abrams, Fred Bodker, Marla Brockman, Ronald Coppaken, Gary Cortés, Rita Cortés, Milisa Fleckier, Joel Goldman, Steve Israelite, Beth Jacobson, Stacey Kahn, Joel Krichiver, Sharon Loftspring, Hazzan Rob Menes and Ernie Rosenthal. Work Begins on Strategic Plan for Beth Shalom A steering committee has been formed to develop a strategic plan for our congregation. Working in conjunction with professional consultants, the committee will ensure that the process is complete by ultimately soliciting feedback from each and every congregant. The result will be a comprehensive three to five year plan, which will assist the Rabbi and Board of Directors in leading Beth Shalom successfully into the future. The process will begin with focus group meetings. Based on data collected, the steering committee and consultants will craft a survey for all members. The next step will be the establishment of an enlarged committee consisting of 20–25 people who will come together in a retreat setting to draw up a road map of the strategic plan. In addition to the survey results, L-R, F-B: Gary Cortés, Kurt Kavanaugh, Gina Kaiser, Joan DeMerchant, Robert Jameson, Bob Palan, Jeff Mallin, Diane Azorsky, Fred Bodker, Susie a key component of this analysis will be a review of Goldsmith and Judy Jacks Berman the strategic plan that was produced in 1999-2000 to determine which items are still relevant priorities. Following the retreat, the consultants will complete the written plan document, which will be presented to the officers, directors and the congregation in spring 2009. Co-chairs of the steering committee are Gary Cortés and Susie Goldsmith. Steering committee members are Diane Azorsky, Judy Jacks Berman, Ron Coppaken, Gina Kaiser, Kurt Kavanaugh, Jeff Mallin, and Bob Palan. Facilitators are Joan DeMerchant and Robert Jameson. Ex-officio members are Rabbi Robert Tobin, President Fred Bodker, and Executive Director Joel Krichiver. www.bethshalomkc.org | 913-647-7279 July 2008 Polsky Religious School Patti Kroll, Director of Education | [email protected] | 913-647-7290 Tzedakah–How Our Students Give Each week, students in the Polsky Religious School come to class with their nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills, and each class collects tzedakah at the start of the class. But, what happens to the money once it is collected? money is given to one of the 1st grade families to use for a family tzedakah project, which is documented in a scrapbook shared with the other children. The family involvement with this 1st grade project has been truly amazing. One component of the 8th grade program is to decide how our tzedakah money will be distributed. Students are asked to make informed choices as they consider many worthy organizations. Class time is spent in text study on who is obligated to give tzedakah, how much do we give and what are the criteria for deciding to whom to give. By both learning and doing, we hope to give our students a strong understanding of why we give tzedakah and some ideas of where they can contribute, in the community, the synagogue and in Israel. As our children return to classes in the fall, they need their school supplies, books and tzedakah money as well. It is part of what we do. This year, under the guidance of their teacher, Donna Riss, students researched one or more organizations and made a recommendation of how much each organization should receive. Based on the group decision, the Polsky Religious School distributed a combined $950 to the following organizations here and in Israel: The Jerusalem Shelter for Battered Women, Yachad—Kansas City’s Kosher Food Pantry, and Concern for Helping Animals in Israel. Our 1st grade students and teachers, Stacey Bell and Rhonda Fromm, have done a class tzedakah project of a different nature for the last seven years. Cathy Newman, program vice-president, planned the event. www.bethshalomkc.org | 913-647-7279 straight talk Adapted from a speech given at installation of officers on June 1. In the book of Bamidbar or Numbers which we began reading this past week, we find a group of Hebrew slaves wandering in the wilderness. They were unaccustomed to their freedom and didn’t quite understand their purpose. A transition occurred, which allowed the slave generation to be nearly replaced by a fresh generation, which would have the vitality to fulfill the promise of redemption and build a homeland. This transition is reminiscent of another transition, on a much smaller scale, which is taking place today at Beth Shalom. With the installation of a new board and new officers comes a fresh start. We are keeping many members of our team, saying an appreciative goodbye to a few, and adding several new faces. My goals for this term can be summarized by #1: insuring successful transition and #2: expanding our base of volunteerism. With regard to transition, we have not one but two transitions to address: clergy and lay leadership. We have recruited an outstanding new rabbi. Rabbi Tobin brings with him a wonderful reputation for teaching and an ability to create a vision for our congregation. His emphasis is much like that of his predecessors, but his style will be different. We must support him as he represents our future. With regard to expanding our base of volunteerism, I am referring to enhancing the investment of our lay leadership. Our collective leadership experience can be an incredible asset if utilized for the benefit of Beth Shalom. Our synagogue members have a long history of involvement in the community. It is now time to step forward and become engaged in the congregation. I now want to challenge each of us to reach a little further and give a little more of ourselves to build Beth Shalom. I believe that we have what it takes to have a winning season. A wonderful five weeks of fun are planned for Beth Shalom Summer Camp. Each week has a special theme including “Going Green,” “Red, White and Blue, America Goes Green,” “Outer Space,” “Zoo” and “The Olympics.” The lucky campers will be planting and taking care of a garden, making art projects from recycled and fresh materials and having plenty of time for water play and jumping around with Wacky Bananas. In addition to all these activities, there will be three concerts. Funky Mama, Eco-Elvis and a performer from the Pacific Northwest, Eric Herman, will all delight our young campers. There will be some surprise visitors to teach the campers more about making our world a better place and taking care of animals. A fun-filled learning experience is in store for all the lucky children who will attend Beth Shalom Summer Camp! The RFNS end of year picnic was the “place to be.” The children and their parents enjoyed a delicious hot dog lunch, pony rides and visiting with their friends. Welcome New Members Brian and Liza Thomas & Family Bryan and Janet Unterhalter & Family Question: Why do we recite blessings? Blessings go back a very long time, to the men of the Great Assembly, who lived about 2300 years ago. According to the great medieval Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides, also known as the Rambam, there are three types of blessings: 1. Blessings we recite prior to eating, drinking, or smelling nice things, are called Birchot Hanehenin. 2. Blessings recited prior to the performance of a mitzvah, are called Birchot Hamitzvot. 3. Blessings that express praise of God, thanks to God, and those blessings that ask God for things, are called Birchot Hodaah. We can say blessings in English and they begin with a basic formula “Praised are You, Adonai our God, who...” and then you supply the rest. When we recite a blessing that is the performance of a mitzvah, the blessing is recited and the action is done. The one exception to this is if one is lighting Shabbat or holiday candles, we light first and then say the blessing with our eyes covered. www.bethshalomkc.org | 913-647-7279 July 2008 D ay a n H a E Do a Mitzvah - Feed the Hungry Join our Lehem (“bread” in Hebrew) Committee in its campaign against hunger when it serves at the Willa Gill Community Center located at Sixth and Nebraska in Kansas City, KS, Thursday, July 31. Marna Dolginoff and Marcia Eveloff chair the committee. The Lehem Committee has its roots in the old Beth Shalom community service committee. “When we started, there was no group serving on the 31st day of the months. We took those and also Christmas Day so the Christian volunteers could celebrate their holiday,” said Marna Dolginoff. www.bethshalomkc.org | 913-647-7279 Volunteers are always needed to assist the committee. Help us to ensure those who are hungry are able to have at least one hot meal a day. All ages are welcome to help the committee cook turkeys, prepare the food and serve lunch on July 31 as well as August 31, October 30, and December 25, 2008. Financial donations are also needed. If you are interested in volunteering, have questions, or wish to make a donation, please contact Marna Dolginoff at 913-266-8163 or Marcia Eveloff at 913-491-1904. July 2008 11 todah rabbah! The following contributions have been made in honor or memory of Beth Shalom family members and friends and reflect donations thru June 13, 2008 Donations of $10 or more per tribute are acknowledged in The Scroll.
