Addition Properties
Description
This activity targets the commutative property of addition. All addends are single digit
numbers. Students complete a pair of related addition statements finding either the missing
start or change. This activity is non adaptive.
Teaching Hints
Ask students how they might solve each statement by using the information in the other
statement rather than by using addition. Discuss which element of each statement is
missing using the terms start, change and addend. Talk about how this process can also be
named as a turn-around. Ask students to write their own turn-around addition pairs.
