Manassas, Virginia ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH This year of 2016-2017, our parish theme is We have found the Messiah. … Come and you will see. based on John 1:39, 41 All Saints is a tithing parish, giving of our time, talent, and treasure so as to give glory to God. We come, one and all, to the feast of Christmas, the birth of Jesus, our Savior. Let us rejoice as we marvel at this baby who is born into our world. He came into our world, with all of its imperfections, because Jesus wanted to be the bridge between heaven and earth. He is the bridge between God the Father and all of us. The way that he became that bridge is by uniting his divinity with a human nature. He did this in a most surprising way. Jesus came as a baby, defenseless and dependent on others. As we reflect upon this Christmas mystery of our faith, we see how we are also called upon to be united with Christ and ourselves to become a bridge-builder between ourselves and others. We are called to help others who may be defenseless and dependent. I have fond memories of many Christmases as a child. The anticipation of gifts, including toys (!), are things that make a child have a sense of wonder. I also remember how my parents instilled in us a sense of wonder as we would go to Mass on Christmas morning. I remember one Christmas morning where there was so much wind and snow, that we could not travel the 3 miles to our parish church and ended up at Mass at the chapel of the mother house of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity, who taught us at school. We stood outside the door in the wind and snow and they invited us in to join with them for Christmas Mass. It was an unexpected Christmas morning! May each of us be able to say in this Christmas season the words which form our parish theme this year, “We have found the Messiah … come and you will see.” On behalf of the priests and deacons, may Christ bless you in this Christmas season with joy and peace. A joy-filled and merry Christmas! I am so very grateful for the gracious welcome you have extended to me and for the assurance of your continued prayers. At Christmas, we sing “Joy to the World.” However, this is more than a seasonal carol. It is the hope and prayer that we hold deep within our hearts. Genuine and lasting joy is found only in an intimate relationship with Jesus, the Son of God, the Son of Mary, the Savior of the World. As we celebrate the great feast of Christmas, may we be renewed in our commitments to stay close to the Lord by faithfully attending Mass, by frequently celebrating God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Penance, by praying daily and by imitating the Lord’s humble and sacrificial service especially in our compassionate care of those in most need. When we live in such a way, we will know genuine joy and will be instruments in bringing that precious gift to all the world. May the Peace and Joy of the Christ Child be yours It is my hope and prayer that through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, our Lord Jesus will abundantly bless you with His peace and joy throughout the Christmas season and always. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Michael F. At this time of year, however, our songs are called “carols.” Why is that? What exactly is a “carol” what makes it different from a hymn? Generally speaking, a hymn is a communal song of praise to God. With that definition, just about everything we sing at liturgy is a hymn. Although, there is a specific musical form widely accepted as a hymn. A carol, however, is a little different. Dating back to the medieval ages, a carol was sung outside of worship – often religious, but not necessarily. It is thought that carols developed as a circle or ring dance called a “carolare” with singing. They developed as a song of the people, music in the vernacular, that contrasted Gregorian chant and other, what we might call “high church” music that was exclusively sung during liturgies. A carol often has a distinctive melodic pattern or repeated refrain that makes it accessible to all people. England is known for a number of these medieval carols still sung today, The Boar’s Head Carol, The Holly and the Ivy and The First Nowell are good examples. As music developed, the carol became most closely associated with Advent and Christmas. What better way to give your gifts to Jesus than through song? All of our choirs welcome new members as we begin to prepare for Holy Week and Easter liturgies.
