REVISIONS RECORD B
Apparent Triggering of Large Earthquakes in Los Angeles and San Francisco Regions
Related to Time Derivatives of Ellipsoidal Demand, Kinematically Derived:
Qualitative Interpretations for 1890–2014.1
Draft 1.0 posted on 12 October 2014
Draft 2.0 posted on 23 November 2014
Draft 3.0 posted on 8 February 2015
Draft 2.0 to Draft 3.0 changes:
1. Section 1 - In sentence seven, replace ‘The’ with ‘This’ for clarity.
2. Section 2 - Sentence three and the remaining paragraph were largely rewritten for clarity and accuracy.
3. Section 3 - In sentence four, replace ‘polar drift into commensurate’ with ‘speed of polar drift into locationspecific speed of’ for specificity.
4. Section 6 – In sentence one, after ‘because’ replace remaining sentence with, “interval values changed within
the polar drift data.” for clarity.
5. Section 11 - At the end of the paragraph add, “(The term ‘tidal’ and related terms in this article will refer to
earth-tide displacements of Earth’s surface and not ocean tides or ocean-tidal loading, unless ocean tides are
specifically designated.)”
6. Section 12 - In sentence two, replace ’36 km’ with ‘about 34 km’ for accuracy. In the last sentence, before
‘impetus’ insert ‘energetic’ for emphasis.
7. Section 13 - In sentence one, after ‘Earth tides’ insert ‘(body tides)’ and after ‘caused’ insert ‘preeminently’ for
completeness and accuracy. In sentence eight, replace ‘Ocean tidal loading’ with ‘Earth-tide displacement is
generally out-of-phase with crustal displacement from ocean-tidal loading, and the latter’ for clarity. In the last
sentence, hyphenate ‘ocean tidal’ and replace ‘tens’ with ‘scores’ for accuracy.
8. Section 14 – In sentence one, replace ‘(Espenak, 2009)’ with ‘(Espenak and Meeus, 2009)’ for accuracy. In
sentence three, replace ‘flexing’ with ‘dilatation’ for accuracy. In the last sentence, replace ‘the Landers quake’
with ‘both the Landers and Big Bear quakes’ for completeness. After the last sentence, add ‘At this point, the
reader may benefit from examining Appendix A to witness the close association between the timing of both
quakes and extrema of jounce and jerk. Other examples of significant quakes in the SF and LA regions are similarly
illustrated. The temporal matching of such quakes with extrema of jounce and jerk helps one to appreciate the
materially consistent, triggering impetus that is apparently derived from jounce and jerk across both modes of
vertical crustal motion—ellipsoidal demand and earth tides.’ for explanation.
9. Section 39 - In sentence six, replace ‘of the use’ with ‘resulting from a usefulness’ for accuracy, and replace
‘they’ with ‘tidal aspects’ for clarity.
10. Section 40 - In sentence three, before ‘triggering’ insert ‘the’ for grammar. Replace Table 3 with a more
complete Table 3 (column 2 revised).
11. Section 41 - In sentence four, change ‘7’ to ‘seven’ for style. In sentence six, delete ‘listed in column 7’ for
concision. In sentence seven, replace ‘this evidence seems’ with ‘these measures seem’ for reduced implication.
12. Section 49 - Before section [49], insert a new section [49] entitled, ‘ Scale Invariance of Jerk and Jounce in
Rock Mechanics?’ Then, increment all subsequent section numbers. After the new section [50],
add the new reference note ‘(Jaeger et al., 2007)’.
13. Section 52 - In sentence two, replace ‘up-to-date annual pole data’ with ‘up-to-date, mean-pole data’ for
specificity. Add at end of paragraph, “Additionally, creation of a state-space representation should allow use of
the relevant mathematical tools that are available to observe solution regions (in triggering-impetus space) of
greater probability of M ≥ 6.0 quakes.” for more information.
14. Section 53 - In sentence three, replace ‘flexing’ with ‘dilatation’ for accuracy.
15. Appendix A - Modified Landers-Big Bear displacement graph to include epicenter distances to coast.
Augmented appendix with 1987.11.24 M6.2 Elmore Desert Ranch and M6.6 Superstition Hills quakes, and rewrote
descriptions.
