PREPARATION
Imagine the following scene: you sit down at your school desk. The
teacher puts a test paper on your desk. You set your watch. You will
have exactly one hour to do the test. You turn the paper over. Then it
hits you: never studied or did even one assignment. For a student,
lack of preparation is the nightmare of nightmares.
Jesus talks about the need for preparation in today’s Gospel. God is
pleased to give us the kingdom, Jesus says. “Gird your loins and light
your lamps.” See that you are prepared.
Jesus’ teaching reminds us of the question once posed to St. Francis
de Sales and his companions. “What would you do if you knew the
end of the world was coming in one hour?” The friends of Francis
shared various plottings of how they would get their affairs in order.
Most mentioned prayer. Francis shrugged, “I would continue doing
what I am doing.” Are you ready to meet the Lord?

SOUND OF SILENCE
Jennifer went on her first retreat. Exhausted from looking after young
children and her ailing mother-in-law, she counted on some rest! She
hadn’t counted on the silence of the retreat weekend, and uneasiness began to rise in her. She was used to constant noise. By midafternoon Jennifer was panicking and ready to leave. She shared her
distress with the retreat director. “What are you running from, Jennifer?” he asked quietly. Jennifer blurted out, “God!” She startled
herself, realizing there was no quiet for God’s voice in her life. Jennifer relaxed into the silence. At the end of the retreat she listened
carefully to the stories of Elijah, who heard God in a tiny breeze, and
Peter, who let wind and waves distract him so that he sank in the
water. Jennifer made two changes in her life. The TV was only turned
on for certain programs, and she made time simply to be alone with
God in weekly Eucharistic Adoration.
No

All things are possible for one who believes, more to one who
hopes, even more to one who loves. - St. Lawrence
Living Stewardship Now
Make room for a silent time and place in your life for God to speak
to your heart. Start slowly--say fifteen minutes twice a week, then
increase to fifteen minutes once a day. Let nothing else intrude on
this special time.
