Let’s Talk !
You will find below information on the Holiday traditions shown on page 1.
Use them to start a discussion with your residents. You will also find a few questions that may help
your residents recollect memories and personal experiences.
Holly
The species are evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers from tropics to temperate zones worldwide. In many western cultures, holly is a traditional
Christmas decoration, used especially in wreaths and illustrations, for instance
on Christmas cards.
Did you collect the holly ornament decorating Christmas log cakes?
In your family, did people kiss under the mistletoe?
Have you ever seen natural holly?
Fruit Cake
Dark, moist and rich Christmas cakes are the most frequently consumed, with
white Christmas cake rarely seen. These cakes tend to be made in mid-November to early December when the weather starts to cool down. They are a staple
during Christmas dinner and a gift generally exchanged between business associates and close friends/family.
Did your family receive a fruit cake from a faraway kin as a gift at Christmas?
Do you enjoy eating fruit cake?
Would your mother prepare such cakes for the Holidays?
Milk and Cookies for Santa
In Canada and the United States, since the 1930s, children have left cookies
and milk on a table for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, though many people
simply consume the cookies themselves. The cookies are often cut into such
shapes as those of candy canes, reindeer, and holly leaves.
As a child, did you leave milk and cookies for Santa?
Was baking Christmas cookies a family affair at your house?
Eggnog
A sweetened dairy-based beverage traditionally made with milk and/or cream,
sugar, and whipped eggs (which gives it a frothy texture). Spirits such as brandy,
rum or bourbon are often added. The finished serving is often garnished with
a sprinkling of ground cinnamon or nutmeg. Eggnog is traditionally consumed
throughout Canada around Christmas.
Do you enjoy eggnog?
Do you have a special ingredient or a special recipe for eggnog?
Was eggnog a special Holiday treat in your family?

Preparation time: 20 m
Cooking time: 10 m
Total time: 30 min

1/2 cup of butter
1 cup of sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
2 1/4 cup of flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoon of salt
1/4 cup of milk

Soften butter in microwave (or take out of fridge in

and vanilla and mix well in mixer. Add the egg and the
vanilla to the butter and sugar and mix some more.
Mix well together the dry ingredients (flour, baking
powder and salt), then sift. Add to the first mix, alternating with dry ingredients and milk, first with mixer, then
with spoon.
With a rolling pin, flatten the dough to approximately a
centimeter of thickness. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters or the rim of a glass.
Bake from 10 to 12 minutes at 375 °F.
You can add icing, chocolate chips or other decorations
once cookies have cooled off.

syrup and preserves. Stir until well blended.

Roll each ball again so it’ll be coated very well. Store
cookies in an airtight container up to 1 week.

Eggless Eggnog!
eggnogaholic.com
*The original recipe asks for a pasteurized egg in order to avoid salmonella
bacteria (look at http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/eggsdairy/ht/pasteurize_eggs.htm for micro-wave method). You can also heat home made
eggnog up to 71 °C (160 °F).
The vanilla, the ice cream and the egg, all work together to
make this an eggnog like tasting shake. Try adding a splash
of rum and extra nutmeg for a true eggnoggy taste.
Eggnogaholic’s Basic Eggnog Recipe
eggnogaholic.com
INGREDIENTS
8 cups milk
1 (3 oz) package of French Vanilla Instant pudding
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp of nutmeg
PREPARATION
In a large bowl, mix the pudding with 1 cup of the milk.
When pudding is formed, add in the remaining ingredients and mix very well. Chill. Serve and Enjoy!
Eggnog Milkshake
For 1 portion :
INGREDIENTS
1 egg*, beaten well
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup milk
¼ teaspoon vanilla
3 scoops vanilla ice cream
(more or less to desired thickness)
PREPARATION
Beat egg and sugar together. Beat in milk and vanilla.
Add this mixture with the ice cream in a blender and mix
completely. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Serve immediately in
a tall glass.
INGREDIENTS
6 eggs separated
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
2 cups milk
from 1/2 to 1 cup rum
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cinnamon (optional)
PREPARATION
Whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, salt and vanilla until
light yellow and creamy. Add alcohol and milk. Cover
and refrigerate for several hours. Refrigerate the egg
whites, as well.
When you are ready to serve your Eggnog, whip the
heavy cream in one bowl and the egg whites in another
bowl. Both should be beaten to stiff peaks form. Then
alternate folding in egg whites and whipped cream to the
eggnog mixture.
This Eggnog is rich, thick and delightfully creamy. You
can use less whipped cream and more milk, it’s a matter
of taste. I use only 1/2 cup rum, but you can use up to 1
cup, again it’s a matter of taste. Garnish with nutmeg and
cinnamon if desired.

Jingle Bell
Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtail ring’
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
A day or two ago,
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow,
And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh,
He laughed as there I sprawling lie,
But quickly drove away.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh! What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! What fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Refrain
A day or two ago
I thought I’d take a ride
And soon, Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side,
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
He got into a drifted bank
And then we got upshot.
Now the ground is white
Go it while you’re young,
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bobtailed bay
Two forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you’ll take the lead.

Get in the Holiday Spirit!
Adeste Fideles (Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful)
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels:
O come, let us adore Him, (3x)
Christ the Lord.
God of God, light of light,
Lo, he abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
Very God, begotten, not created:
O come, let us adore Him, (3x)
Christ the Lord.
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of Heaven above!
Glory to God, glory in the highest:
O come, let us adore Him, (3x)
Christ the Lord.
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be glory given!
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing!
O come, let us adore Him, (3x)
Christ the Lord.
