Non-Consecutive Terms?
America has had many
two-term presidents in
its history, but only one
who served two nonconsecutive terms:
Grover Cleveland. Born
in 1837 in Caldwell,
New Jersey, Cleveland
became a lawyer in
Buffalo, New York and

Our Presidents in America's History
was appointed district
attorney of Erie County
in 1863. Aligning
himself with the
Democratic Party, he
began his political
journey from being
elected Sheriff of Erie
County to Mayor of
Buffalo to Governor of
New York before
narrowly winning the
Grover Cleveland, 22nd and
presidency in 1885,
24th President of the
only the second
United States
bachelor ever to be
elected to the office (James Buchanan, elected in 1857,
was the first). After losing to Benjamin Harrison in
1889, Cleveland was again elected president in 1893,
the only person so far to serve two separate, nonconsecutive terms.
