Q&A
Can you download audiobooks to a Kindle?
Not officially to any Kindle models. However, there is a workaround on the Kindle Fire. You need to
download the Overdrive app, which is not in the Kindle app store. Here’s how to do it
Go to settings, then “more”
Choose “Device”
Turn on “allow installation of applications”
Go to an app store, such as getjar.com and install the getjar app
Once Getjar is installed, get the free Overdrive app
MP3 Audiobooks and ePub versions of ebooks can be downloaded with the app. You do not
need to connect the device to the computer.
The Kindle Touch has a web browser. Can I use it to search the Overdrive collection and download
Kindle ebooks?
No. The web browser on the Kindle Touch does not have that capability. It’s mainly there to order from
Amazon.
Can I password protect the web browser on my Kindle Touch?
No. There is no way to disable the web browser. If you are lending your Kindle or letting a child use it,
there is no way to block the web browsing function. The only way to block ordering on the Kindle Touch
is to remove the credit card information from it (once it’s been set up), but then you have to add it every
time you want to buy something or download free books from Amazon.
Do Kindles have the text-to-speech feature?
The Kindle Touch has text-to-speech. While you are reading your book or document, touch the screen,
then touch the menu button and choose turn on text-to-speech. Choose male or female speaking voice
and the rate. Press the off button to turn it off.
How can I put my documents on my Kindle?
Go to www.amazon.com/sendtokindle and download the free software to your pc. Then go to the
document you want to send (doc has to be closed), right click on it, and choose “send to Kindle.” It takes
a few minutes for the document to be formatted and sent. It will be in “documents” on the Kindle.
Can I put music on my Kindle?
Yes, you can download from your iTunes. You have to go to the Amazon website and download the
Cloud Drive. This will search for all the music in your files, and you can add them to the cloud. On the
Kindle Fire, they will show up in your music folder. When they’re in the cloud, you can play them only
when you have wifi. To listen to them anywhere, press the device button to move them from the cloud
to the device.
I checked out an ebook from Overdrive and sent it to my Kindle, but it doesn’t show up on my
homepage. How can I get it?
Check to make sure your wifi is turned on. Try synching your Kindle. If it still doesn’t show up, check your
archived items. Sometimes an Overdrive book will show up there. When you select it, it should go into
your book collection on your home screen.
