Monday 25 May 2015 — Issue 14 Tena Koutou Katoa Holly Stewart Receives Media Acclaim for her Tennis Success We were delighted to read about Holly’s successes in last weeks College Sports section of the New Zealand Herald under the well-deserved banner: Aspiring Young Tennis Player Makes her Mark. We were also delighted that the very first sentence read: The article documents Holly and Selwyn’s success in the 2015 Champion of Champs competition and the fact that Holly is in the 4 person team to compete for NZ in the World Junior Tennis Championships in the Czech Republic later this year. We are very proud of Holly! A Successful Scholars’ Dinner As this photo shows, the staffroom was resplendent on the evening of the 2015 Scholars’ Dinner. The top 30 scholars in NCEA Level 2 who all achieved certificates endorsed with Excellence were invited to attend with a parent. The evening is in part an opportunity to honour and celebrate those students who excel academically. It is also designed to inform, inspire and support them to aim to excel in the Scholarship examinations Our speakers included Ken Rapson, Director of the Schools’ Partnership office at the University of Auckland, Bahavathy Kathirgamanathan, ex-Selwyn scholar and now in her final year at Engineering School and Dylan Van Lier, our Year 13 student who last year sat and achieved Scholarship in three subjects. Everyone agreed it was a successful evening and that the food was excellent! Well done to the students who volunteered to be waitresses and earned service points towards their Selwyn Silver and to the Stage Challenge group who raised money for their performance on June 24th by washing dishes all evening! Selwyn College, Kohimarama Road, Kohimarama Laura Wotton Receives Media Acclaim for her World Vision Plans We are delighted that our Year 12 student Laura Wotton has received acclaim in the Eastern Bays Courier for her plan to undertake a 43 kilometre walk from May 22 – 24 from Birkenhead to Whangaparaoa to raise money for World Vision. This year World Vision focus is on raising money for children in Bangladesh. As Laura says, "The country is facing a huge water and hunger crisis. Almost eight million children are malnourished and one in 17 children don't make it to their fifth birthday." Laura's goal is to raise $1000. Congratulations too to other Selwyn students who are also involved in raising money for this cause. Pink Shirt Day at Selwyn Congratulations to the R Team for organising Pink Shirt Day here at Selwyn College on Friday 22 May. As the photos show the team were very creative in their strategies to draw the attention of students to work together to stand up to bullying. Pink Shirt Day is an annual event held in many countries around the world. It began in Canada in 2007 when a group of students decided to defend a kid who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, many of his peers turned up to school the next day wearing pink shirts. Many of our teachers and Year 13 students wore pink shirts last Friday and all students received a marshmallow and a pink wrist band when they signed a pledge to work to prevent and stop bullying. Congratulations Haruka Awajiya A huge congratulations to our talented student Haruka who has been selected to represent NZ in the 2015 Commonwealth Karate Championships to be held in New Delhi, India.
