Tomatoes grow from a big idea
Power up, bills down
To do something that’s never been done,
you have to think big.
Did you get a new
electronic “toy” over the
holidays? Since they can
add to your electricity
bill, run your electronics
efficiently with these
wattsmart tips:
That’s what Houweling’s Tomatoes and
Rocky Mountain Power did when tapping
into waste heat and carbon dioxide from
our natural gas-fired Currant Creek Power
Plant. The unique system allows the 28acre Houweling’s greenhouse near Mona,
Utah to grow tomatoes year-round.
Televisions – Check the
display settings to reduce
brightness or contrast.
“Vivid” and “dynamic”
settings typically use
more energy.
Houweling’s received $950,000 in Rocky
Mountain Power wattsmart incentives
to install energy-efficient lighting, fans
and more. The equipment saves enough
energy to power more than 1,000 typical
Utah homes each year and saves the
tomato grower $500,000 in energy costs.
Game consoles – Unplug
when not in use, or use
a power strip to make it
easier to turn everything
completely off.
Phones, tablets and
laptops – Remember to
unplug the charger when
your device is fully charged.
Also consider adjusting
brightness settings to
extend battery life.
The Juab County community also has benefited from a business that hires
many of its 170 employees locally.
The big idea is attracting big honors. The project was a nominee for
Breakthrough Solution of the Year at the 2016 Platts Global Energy Awards –
often described as “the Oscars of the energy industry.”
Investing to improve service
To ensure customers have the safe,
reliable electricity they need, we
continue to make targeted longterm investments in our system.
While our service is among the best
– 99.97 percent reliable – we’re never
satisfied. Our system investments
work to ensure capacity, improve
equipment performance and maintain
or restore service when electricity
needs to be rerouted. SAFETY
MATTERS
Use generators
with care
If there’s an outage, a
portable generator can be
helpful to power individual
appliances. However,
you need to pay close
attention to safety when
operating one.
Never plug the generator
into an outlet or a home’s
electrical panel without
having a professional
electrician install a
transfer switch. Plugging a
generator into an outlet is
extremely dangerous to
you and your neighbors.
Generators emit deadly
carbon monoxide, so only
use them outdoors, away
from windows, doors and
vents, and in open areas
protected from weather.

The addition of a second transformer at our Syracuse Substation – scheduled
to be complete mid-2017 – will increase reliability for our customers in the
Ogden area.
Rocky Mountain Power also completed 14 renewable energy projects
in 2016. Approximately 700 megawatts of power from solar and wind
resources will come into service by early 2017.

Plug in to a powerful value

and enjoy your entertainment. To keep your costs down and improve service,
we’re taking advantage of technology and working more efficiently. Our focus has

For about $3 per day – less than the cost of a fast food meal – we deliver the
energy you need to power your home.
