and Clinical psychologist practising since 8years in Bombay, India... Iam currently enrolled for a research
programme here; my topic is "Exploratory study on Anger in school children(8-12yrs)".
In this context, I purchased STAXI-2. Through the pilot studies I realised a strong need for cultural
adaptation in India. The language used in the items and its conotation/interpretation in the Indian scenario
is very different; for eg. the item "Iam mad" or "When Iam mad, I say nasty things". The term 'mad' here
means a lunatic/psychotic/insane not plainly emotionally-disturbed or neurotic.
Sir, I therefore humbly seek your esteemed permission to attempt to adapt your scale for children between
8-12years in the Indian context. Looking forward to your kind gesture and support..

I was pleased to learn of your interest in using our State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI-2) in
your research on anger in school children. The meaning of "mad" in the US includes feeling angry, along
with the other terms that you have noted. In developing the STAXI, the item that included mad had good
psychometric properties.
I assume that there may be other terms in the Hindi language that have the connotation of anger, which
could be used to give a greater variety to the STAXI questions. A Hindi adaptation of the STAXI is
currently being developed by Sunil Saini at Bombay University. I am sending Dr. Saini a copy of this
correspondence with the request that he send you information about his Hindi adaptation of the STAXI.
Since the STAXI was developed for the measurement of anger in adolescents and adults, it may not be
appropriate to use this measure with 8-12 year old children. However, we are presently developing a
children's adaptation of the STAXI for which Dr. Thomas Brunner has the major responsibility. I am
sending Dr. Brunner a copy of this correspondence with the request that he send you the Test Form for the
children's adaptation of the STAXI, along with whatever information that he can forward to you as an email
attachment.

I would, indeed, like to encourage you to consider developing a children's Hindi adaptation of the STAXI

Thank you so much for your email.
I would like to give a background on my research- I am doing an exploratory study on anger in pre-puberty
children for my doctoral programme through SNDT University. I extensively searched for child-version of
Anger scale but in vain. Subsequently, my guide reccomended that I purchase STAXI-2 and then adapt it to
Indian settings for my sample group of 8-12yrs.
I had sent several emails to you seeking your opinion but the emails bounced. This time though I was
lucky.
I live in the suburban Bombay, where most of the schools are English medium schools with SSC, ICSE,
CBSE & IGCSE boards. Sir, I administered the original scale to 30 students of III- V grade from the
different boards (mentioned above) and did pilot studies to assess the difficulty level - using this rationale,
I omitted several items and truncated the original scale of 57items to 35items. I introduced two parallel
forms- one for the child and other for the parent. Currently I have undertaken the study on 450 students of a
school.
The objective of my current project was not to develop a scale, it is rather an incidental outcome (with its
own limitations). The objective is to find out the dominant causes of anger among pre-puberty children in
suburban Bombay. In the first stage i.e. in Quantitative study, along with the truncated scale, Iam using
Family Environment scale & Teacher Observation of Classroom Adaptation for the quantitative study. In
the second stage, I will do qualitative study using interviews with children (same age group), parents &
teachers.
Sir, in India the research projects are self-funded and I've spent considerable amounts from my own pocket.
Had I known about Dr.Thomas Brunner's work, with his esteemed permission, I could have used his scale.
However the American English & Indian English (written as well as oral) being different, I would have had
to adapt his scale too. Nonetheless,as I receive correspondence with Dr.Thomas I shall definitely share my
work with him.
I understand that once the American scale has been culturally- adapted here, then further translation and
adaptations can be taken up for several Indian languages. Sir, I shall endeavour to take your valuable
suggestion myself for my future projects. I have also conveyed about your email to my colleagues and
seniors so that they may take up this project.
With your kind permission, I can send attachment of my truncated scale with its psychometric properties in
the next mail.
I am also awaiting correspondence from Dr.Thomas Brunner.

My apology for the delay in this response to your December 4 email, which came while I was participating
in a Conference in Mexico. I greatly appreciate the information that you provided regarding your
exploratory study of anger in pre-puberty children.
I sincerely hope that you have received information from Dr. Brunner regarding our State-Trait Anger
Expression Inventory for children and adults (STAXI-CA), and am sending Dr. Brunner a copy of this
correspondence for this information. I am also sending a copy to Sunil Saini, who has been working on the

Sir, I've been searching for a scale to assess classroom behaviour of students.. Recently I came across The
TOCA- old version with 5items... I used this scale for a pilot study and realized that it does not give
substantial information w.r.t. the child's behaviour. Subsequently over the internet I read about TOCA-R
with 16items... Sir, my study is self-funded and I earnestly request you to permit me to use the new TOCAR scale (free or at a nominal cost).

feel free to use TOCA, and let us know how it works in your cultural context. I am also attaching an
extensive supplementary issue of the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence that includes descriptions of
our 1st generation Baltimore randomized field trials in which TOCA was a centrally important measure.
This will allow you to see the use of TOCA in a real epidemiologically based trial in a large metropolitan

I have attached copies of the current version of the TOCA-R that we are using in our research as well as
training materials that we use. I hope they are useful to you.
The "teacher form" is the form the teacher looks at while the interviewer reads the questions. The
"interviewer form" is where the interviewer records the responses. A key in the interviewer form indicates
the construct that each item belongs to.
