Introduction-How does the book begin?
The author introduces the story by showing Sal’s beginning feelings, the main characters, and
both the girls ‘stories.
Point of View- From whose point of view is the story being told? What do you think about both
of the two stories that are taking place at the same time?
Sal is telling the story. I think the two stories are well introduced and very well told.
Conflict-Each of the main characters have a problem that they are trying to solve throughout the
novel. What are some of those problems? Sal-trying to see her mother on her birthday in Euclid, Idaho.
Phoebe- trying to find what what happened to her mother. Gram-was trying to “hold in there.” (Trying to live after the snake bite.)
Gramps-trying to keep Gram alive because he wants to be with Gram his whole life.
Rising Action-How do the characters go about solving their problems?
Sal-drives with Gram and Gramps to Idaho.
Phoebe-teams up with Sal and gathers evidence about what happened to her mother.
Gram-goes to a hospital accompanied by Gramps.
Gramps-stays with Gram wherever she goes and talks to her while she’s asleep.
Discovery-What are some things that Sal learns throughout this the story.
Sal discovers that Mrs. Cadaver’s husband died by a car crash caused by a drunk driver, Mrs.
Partridge lost her sight in the crash, “the lunatic” is Phoebe’s brother, and that her mother died.
Climax-What is the turning point of the story?
The turning point of the story is when Phoebe and Sal start looking for Phoebe’s mother for Sal’s
story. And when a snake bit Gram is when the story gets good in Sal’s story. These are the
turning points in the story because after the events are when all the surprises start popping up.

Falling Action-How do the characters resolve their problems?
Sal-Arrives in Idaho on her mother’s birthday.
Phoebe- Her mother comes back with Mike, the lunatic, who turns out to be Phoebe’s brother.
Gram-Could not accomplish her goal; dies in Idaho.
Gramps-Had the fact that he was with Gram their whole relationship except for the three days she
was with “the egg man.”
Resolution-How does the story end?
The story ends by Sal returning to Bybanks. The author explains what’s going on, on the farm,
wrapping up the story. What did you like best about the story? What did you like least?
What I liked best about the story is all the surprises that kept me reading. The thing I liked least
was when Mr. Birkway read the journal’s aloud to the class because the author only said that Mr.
Birkway only read the main character’s journals, why didn’t he read the other student’s journals?
If there was one thing I could change about the story, what would it be?
If there was one thing I could change in the story, it would be the death of Gram. I thought Gram
should of lived on. I think would have been a much happier if Gram had lived.
Would you recommend this book for others to read? Why or why not?
Yes, I would recommend this book for others to read. I would recommend the book because once
I got to the climax of the story, I could. Not. Stop. Reading. It really sucked me into the book!
