Spatial Agreement ~ Giving Directions
Giving directions in ASL means using the signing space in front of you and the
following non-manual behaviors. First, give general information by pointing in the
direction (Real-World Orientation) and giving enough information that the listener can
visualize the route or location.
Eye Gaze and Location Agreement:
Means using eye gaze that
follows the route you trace and you should visualize places along that route,
shifting your eye gaze to “look at” the places you describe. Your head
should tilt in the opposite direction that your arm and eyes are indicating (as
if looking at the location). Your head tilts right as you indicate something to
the left and tilts left to indicate a location on the right.
Non-Manuals for Distance:
1.
2.
3.
4.
“FAR AWAY”

2. _______________________________
3. _______________________________
“VERY NEAR”

NOTE:
These DO NOT indicate actual distance, but are ‘relative’ distances and
the same whether you are indicating down the hall or distance between
two cities. Ex: GYM>RESTROOMS>PROJECT+AREA
Ex: SEATTLE>FEDERAL+WAY>GRAHAM
