Lesson 7 Homework Practice
Discount – Finding the Original Price
Find the original price to the nearest cent.
Example: A cell phone is on sale for 30% off. If the sale price is $239.89, what is the original
price?
The sale price is 100% - 30%, which is 70% of the original price. Let p equal the original price
(whole). Use the equation part = percent x whole
239.89 = 0.7 x p
239.89 = 0.7 x p Divide both sides by 0.7
0.7
0.7
342.70 = p, therefore the original price was $342.70

2. LAUNDRY DETERGENT A box of laundry detergent is on sale for $6.50. If this price
represents a 40% discount from the original price, what is the original price to the nearest cent?
