RailWorks – ICE 1 (Class 401) High Speed Train
1 Background
1.1 ICE 1 (Class 401)
The ICE 1 is
the
first
series
of
German high-speed
trains and
one
of
five
in
the InterCityExpress family. Revenue service at speeds up to 250 km/h (155.3 mph) started
in 1991. It was raised to 280 km/h (174.0 mph) in May 1995 and later reduced to 250 km/h
(155.3 mph) again. Today, only a handful of ICE 1 services on the Nuremberg-Ingolstadt
high-speed rail line reach 280 km/h (174.0 mph).
Train sets consist of two power cars (Class 401) and up to 14 intermediate cars (Classes 801
to 804). Occasionally, power cars and intermediate cars of the ICE 2 are used as well
(Classes 402, 805 to 808). A first series of 41 train sets was eventually ordered after lengthy
discussion between the Bundesbahn and the Federal Ministry of Transport. The development
of the power cars was tendered in March 1986, with development of the intermediate cars
in June.
These trains were acquired for the high-speed lines which were to be opened in 1991, plans
called for 40 to 50 ICE train sets ready for service. The power output of the power cars was
designed for trains with 14 intermediate cars at a speed of 250 km/h.

4 Creating an ICE 1 train set
4.1 Scenario Editor
To get your ICE 1 ready for selection in a scenario you will need to enable it in the
object set filters, which will add it to the rolling stock list.
Follow these steps to enable the ICE 1:
1. Enter the Scenario Editor. (Note: If a route is locked it will need to be
unlocked first before you can enter the Scenario Editor. Unlock by clicking
the padlock icon in the bottom right of the screen).
2. Click the Object Set Filter button (the small blue cube on the middle left
panel).
3. In the new window which opens on the right hand side, select the following:
virtualRailroads / vR_ICE1
4. The ICE 1 will now appear in the list of rolling stock for that route.
5. You may need to repeat this process on other routes or scenarios where you
wish the ICE 1 to be displayed.
4.1.1 Coach Numbering / Train Formation
Each coach is unique in an ICE 1 consist, and to reflect this, each coach in-game
has been given a unique coach numbering. The table below shows the correct
formation of a full set ICE 1 (2 Power Cars and 12 Carriages)

RailWorks – ICE 1 (Class 401) High Speed Train
6 AFB-Function (Keys Y and C)
AFB-Function (Keys Y and C) – Shift + A to Activate
The ICE 1 has a complete new function. The AFB is an automatic throttle and brake
System that is similar to the cruise control in a car. You can choose a speed and the
system will automatically accelerate or brake. To use the AFB on the ICE 1 please
use this guide:
If you aren’t moving, move the reverser to forward position. If you are currently in
motion, you can use the AFB Directly, However you should turn off the F4 control
panel.
You can use the AFB Control to control the speed of the train; you can do this by
changing the AFB Control to the speed that you would like to travel. You can see
this in the digital display, to change the speed control you can use either the mouse
or the Y Key
To activate the AFB you will need to move the throttle to 100%, if you do not do this
the AFB won’t be able activate on anything less that 100% throttle. While the AFB is
active the throttle and brake controls will be locked out of control. You will also
need to use the mouse or the Shift + A to activate AFB on the train.
With the AFB Control you are able to choose any speed that you need for the
scenario, however you should keep in mind the braking distance that the AFB will
need to slow down to if you change to a lower speed. To do this you can use the
mouse or the Y and C Keys.
If you need to stop (for example a red signal or a platform) you will need to
deactivate the AFB controls, to do this you will need to change the AFB control
down to zero and also set the throttle to 0% at the same time. This will unlock the
throttle and brake controls so that you will be able to slow down.
The train power display is deactivated during AFB, this is due to the needle shiver
all the time, however because of this you should not use the F4 functionality while
the AFB is in use due to a few odd effects that may occur.
