ACS
"Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research Symposium"
Dear Polymer Colleagues:
The recognition symposium “Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research” will be held at the ACS National Meeting in Dallas, Texas on March 16‐20, 2014. The symposium is meant to provide recognition to outstanding graduate students engaged in polymer research. This will be the tenth time that POLY honors outstanding polymer graduate students in this way. It will consist of two half‐day oral sessions, a poster session, and a networking social.
The purposes of this symposium are to provide recognition to outstanding graduate students in polymer science and engineering, to foster networking and exposure, and to help develop the careers of future leaders in our field. We request that each department (e.g., chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer/material science, and related areas) nominate one outstanding graduate student to speak on his or her original research in this special symposium. We would hope that the student's advisor would be able to fund the student's travel to the meeting. If possible, we will try to raise funds to provide some limited financial assistance.
These three documents should be sent, by October 7, 2013, (electronically preferred but paper is acceptable) to:
Dr. H. N. Cheng
Southern Regional Research Center
USDA Agricultural Research Service
1100 Robert E. Lee Blvd.
New Orleans, LA 70124
email: [email protected] (backup email: [email protected])
The Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research symposia in previous years have been very
successful. We hope the 2014 symposium will be no different. Descriptions of earlier
symposia and the names of the outstanding students can be found at
http://www.polyacs.org/323.html
Thank you in advance for your participation.
Sincerely,
Symposium Organizing Committee
Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research Symposium
ACS Polymer Chemistry Division (POLY)
H. N. Cheng, USDA, Chris Ellison, Univ. of Texas, Austin
Christine Landry‐Coltrain, Eastman Kodak, Tim Long, Virginia Tech
ACS
The nominated student should enter the abstract of his or her presentation to the PACS (at http://abstracts.acs.org), under "Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research Symposium" (POLY Division) by the deadline of October 7, 2013.
In addition, the nominating department should prepare the following materials in order to aid in the selection process:
‐ One‐page nominating letter from the student's research advisor
‐ One‐page seconding letter from the Department Chair (or equivalent)
‐ An application form, to be filled out by the student, including:
+ One‐page "Research Overview" (a summary of his or her research in view of what has been done before)
+ One‐paragraph "Statement of Goals" (career goals in the field of polymer science) The application form can be downloaded from the following website:

BD in RTP
• BDT is hosting another Industrial Partnership Day on Nov 8, 2013. This is for Masters and PhD students to learn about projects here at BD. Many of our scientists will be available to describe their work and discuss their perspectives on technical careers in industry.
• There will also be information about the summer internships that are available in 2014. These paid positions are designed to give students an opportunity over the summer to experience industrial research in areas such as biotechnology, microbiology, immunology, cancer biology, biomedical engineering and materials science.
• If you would like to attend, please contact Terry Amiss via email by Oct 15th. Please feel free to post and share the attached flyer.
