Organizational records and research materials of a historical society in south
Kansas City, MO. Also includes information on neighboring regions, and Watts Mill.
HISTORY:
The Historical Society of New Santa Fe was founded in 1977 to celebrate the
125th anniversary of New Santa Fe. The town of New Santa Fe, Missouri stood at
the junction of the Santa Fe Trail and State Line Road, now southwest Kansas
City. The first documented wagon train stopped at the settlement in the spring of
1823. By 1852, the town was incorporated. It soon boasted a post office, two
general stores, a shoe shop, drug store, the Watson Place Inn, a blacksmith shop,
and a saloon. The village suffered from the Border-Ruffian War of 1855-56 and
an 1861 Civil War battle was fought nearby. By 1879 railroads began to replace
wagons for hauling freight and trade merchandise and the Santa Fe Trail was used
less frequently. Consequently, commerce in the town decreased. In 1902 the post
office closed, and by 1932 only a few scattered dwellings remained. The Historical
Society of New Santa Fe brochure: Ann Vernon, 1994.
