Jack London was born as John Griffith Chaney on 12 January 1876 in San Francisco, California. A few
months later his mother, Flora, married John London. The boy had two step-sisters. The London
family was not a rich one and Jack started selling newspapers at the age of ten to help his
stepfather. Jack's school education did not last long. He only completed eight grades of school in
Oakland. From a very young age he tried many different professions. In 1889 he began working 12 to
16 hours a day in a cannery. He was paid 10 cents an hour. In the following year he bought a boat and
became an “oyster pirate”, earning quite good money but his boat was damaged. He also shovelled coal
in a power plant and worked on a sealing ship on the Pacific Ocean. In his free time he went to
libraries and read a lot of novels and travel books.
After surviving a typhoon at sea when he was seventeen, he told his mother about his adventure. She
encouraged him to take part in a writing contest in a local newspaper. London sent his story and won
the first prize. He decided to be a short story writer. But first he went to travel across the States.
He saw many poor people living in difficult conditions and he even spent 30 days in prison. After that,
he decided that he wanted a better life. He went back to school and then became a student at the
University of California but he did not complete his studies – he did not have enough money.
In 1897 he left for the Klondike during the Gold Rush. He did not find much gold and spent the winter
in a cabin (small wooden house) without any fresh vegetables or fruit to eat. He became ill and lost 4
teeth but his experiences gave him material for future novels and stories ( for example White Fang ).
In 1899 he began publishing stories in a magazine. He decided that he would write at least a thousand
words a day and he did that to the end of his life. Four years later he became famous thanks to his
novel The Call of the Wild. Over the last 16 years of his life London published more than 50 books as
a writer and hundreds of articles as a journalist. He became the best selling, highest paid and most
popular American authors of his time. Some of his books were translated into 70 languages and are
still read all over the world. A lot of his stories were made into films.
London was married twice. He had two daughters with his first wife and one (she only lived for 38
hours) with the second. His second wife, Charmian, was his true love and a great friend. They
travelled a lot together. They both loved sailing and went to Australia on their ship the Snark. They
even wanted to sail around the world but Jack was ill. Jack also loved farming and bought some land in
California. It was called “Beauty Ranch”. He often rode horseback through it.
Jack London died of kidney disease at the age of forty at his ranch cottage on 22 November 1916
after about 10 years of serious health problems. He was cremated and his ashes were buried on his
beloved ranch. He was a dreamer and a visionary. He was full of laughter and always ready for
adventure on land or sea. He was one of the most attractive and romantic figures of his time.

The Sun Has Long Been Set by William Wordsworth
The sun has long been set,
Fills all the hollow of the sky.
The stars are out by twos and threes,
Who would "go parading"
The little birds are piping yet
In London, "and masquerading,"
Among the bushes and trees;
On such a night of June
There's a cuckoo, and one or two thrushes,
With that beautiful soft half-moon,
And a far-off wind that rushes,
And all these innocent blisses?
And a sound of water that gushes,
On such a night as this is!
And the cuckoo's sovereign cry

Wordsworth was one of the most important of England's Romantic poets.
William Wordsworth was born on 7 April 1770 at Cockermouth in North West England, next
to Scotland . His father was a lawyer. Wordsworth's parents died before he was 15. He had
four siblings. Wordsworth loved nature and we can see it in many of his poems.
While studying at Cambridge University, Wordsworth spent a summer holiday on a walking
tour in Switzerland and France. He started to write poetry while he was at school, but none
was published until 1793. He moved house several times.
In 1802, Wordsworth married a childhood friend, Mary Hutchinson. The next few years were
very difficult for Wordsworth. Two of his children died, his brother died at sea and his
sister Dorothy was very ill.
After 1813, Wordsworth continued to write poetry, but it was never as great as his early
works. After 1835, he wrote little more. In 1842, he got money from the government and
the next year he became poet laureate. Wordsworth died on 23 April 1850. His great
autobiographical poem, 'The Prelude', which he had worked on since 1798, was published
after his death.

“WE ARE SEVEN”

———A simple Child,
“You run about, my little Maid,
That lightly draws its breath,
Your limbs they are alive;
And feels its life in every limb,
If two are in the church-yard laid,
What should it know of death?
Then ye are only five.”
I met a little cottage Girl:
“Their graves are green, they may be seen,”
She was eight years old, she said;
The little Maid replied,
Her hair was thick with many a curl
“Twelve steps or more from my mother’s door,
That clustered round her head.
And they are side by side.
She had a rustic, woodland air,
“My stockings there I often knit,
And she was wildly clad:
My kerchief there I hem;
Her eyes were fair, and very fair;
And there upon the ground I sit,
—Her beauty made me glad.
And sing a song to them.
“Sisters and brothers, little Maid,
“And often after sun-set, Sir,
How many may you be?”
When it is light and fair,
“How many? Seven in all,” she said,
I take my little porringer,
And wondering looked at me.
And eat my supper there.
“And where are they? I pray you tell.”
“The first that dies was sister Jane;
She answered, “Seven are we;
In bed she moaning lay,
And two of us at Conway dwell,
Till God released her of her pain;
And two are gone to sea.
And then she went away.
“Two of us in the church-yard lie,
“So in the church-yard she was laid;
My sister and my brother;
And, when the grass was dry,
And, in the church-yard cottage, I
Together round her grave we played,
Dwell near them with my mother.”
My brother John and I.
“You say that two at Conway dwell,
“And when the ground was white with snow,
And two are gone to sea,
And I could run and slide,
Yet ye are seven! I pray you tell,
My brother John was forced to go,
Sweet Maid, how this may be.”
And he lies by her side.”
Then did the little Maid reply,
“How many are you, then,” said I,
“Seven boys and girls are we;
“If they two are in heaven?”
Two of us in the church-yard lie,
Quick was the little Maid’s reply,
Beneath the church-yard tree.”
“O Master! we are seven.”
