Table of Contents
Dear Friends,
Summer is a great time to be at The Crucible. On Monday, June 22, we begin
six solid weeks of youth summer camps! Our studios are full weekdays, with
hundreds of young makers ages 8 to 17 working on projects as diverse as
robotics, welding and glass flameworking.
Evenings and weekends our studios are buzzing with activity, with students
ages 16 and up exploring their own creative instincts.
Although summer is our shortest session (June 29-August 23), it’s jam-packed
with an incredible array of options across all departments. There are several
brand-new classes, including Juggling (pg. 10); Fused Glass Decals (pg. 12); the
Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair (pg. 12); Drawing for the Absolute
Beginner (pg. 16); and Beginning Acrylic Painting (pg. 16).
Summer youth camps are open for enrollment right now, while summer adult
class sign-ups begin Friday, June 5 for Crucible members and Friday, June 19
for the general public. Members get the satisfaction of supporting a vital East
Bay arts resource — plus, they save 10% on tuition fees and get first choice
of courses and dates. Early Birds who register by Sunday, July 5 take an
additional 10% off, for a combined savings of 20% off. Enroll now to take
advantage of these substantial benefits!
Take a free tour to see what we’re all about! Tours take place every Tuesday
night at 6pm, and every 1st and 3rd Saturday at 3pm, except during holidays
and special events.

I joined The Crucible team last July, and every day I am still amazed by the
spirit and enthusiasm of our instructors and students, eager to explore and to
create. I’ve learned as much observing classes and speaking with our students
as I have in the office. Last year it was a fun, inspiring, and creative summer for
me. This year, it’s your turn! Please include The Crucible in your summer plans.

ABOUT Us
“ My son loved this camp more than any
other camp he’s ever been in. We will
almost certainly enroll him again…”
— Carolyn W.
“I love The Crucible! Amazing resource.”
— Bobbie G.
“My boys were so proud of their new skills…
not your typical summer camp…”
— Judy Z.
Now in our 16th year, The Crucible
consistently receives high marks
and glowing commentary from
adult students, kids and parents.
Founded in 1999, The Crucible is a
nonprofit arts education organization
that fosters a collaboration of arts,
industry and community. We aim
to inspire creative exploration and
expression through hands-on arts
education and experiences. A hub of
innovation built around the industrial
arts, The Crucible serves as a catalyst
for personal growth and community
transformation.
At The Crucible, forges roar, sparks fly,
glass bends, neon glows and creativity
explodes! Over 85 celebrated faculty and
industrial arts experts teach nearly 175
courses and workshops to around 5,000
students a year at our impressive 56,000
square foot West Oakland facility, making
The Crucible the largest institution of
its kind on the west coast. Our programs
include Adult Classes as well as our
award winning Summer Camp and other
youth programs, in which kids 8-17 gain
memorable learning experiences and make
new friends.
Using metal, wood, stone, glass, clay,
leather and many other materials, Crucible
courses have something for everyone —
from novices to experienced artists and
trades people. We offer a noncompetitive,
open atmosphere for people with diverse
interests and backgrounds. Our instructors
have extensive experience and a passion
for what they teach, and make learning
industrial arts fun and unintimidating.
And our students agree: 75% of those who
take a Crucible class return for another,
and another.
Crucible classes give you training and
support to succeed. Most classes feature
project-based lessons that allow you to
create a finished piece. We utilize a variety
of formats, including 10-week, 5-week
2

and weeklong courses. We also offer
“tasters,” to get a quick overview, as well
as weekend intensives and master
classes. The Crucible features a low
faculty-to-student ratio (often 1:6 or
better), which fosters a hands-on teaching
approach. Our pricing structure includes
both tuition and studio fees, as well as
all the materials, tool access and safety
training that students need. There are no
hidden costs, however some classes may
require additional materials as noted.
Many leading Bay Area businesses
participate in our Team Building
Workshops, encouraging their employees
to learn and collaborate in new ways.
These take place in a single day and range
from 2 to 8 hours in length (see page 6).
The Crucible provides two special options
for continuing access to our studio and
tools. Studio Rentals offer students a
chance to continue their hands-on practice
in areas where they are currently taking
or have taken a class. Our CREATE program
(CRucible Expanded Access to Tools &
Equipment) gives members a chance to
work in the studio area of their choice
during regular studio hours, with access to
professional-level equipment that would
otherwise be unavailable to most homebased makers (see page 7).
“ I love The Crucible. I really appreciate the
community aspect, quality of classes and
creative space.”
— Isabelle S.
“ I was completely impressed by the
facility… The Crucible ROCKS… I’m
telling everyone about it.”
— Anonymous
“My son took his 2nd class at The Crucible,
Glass Flameworking, and had a blast! You
have an amazing facility!”
— Julie M.
“ I had a great experience with my first
class, looking forward to the next…”
— Alicia P.
“The Crucible is a great creative,
educational, inspiring, environment
for a teen.”
— Chela R.
“The ‘taster’ courses are fantastic…”
— Kathleen M.
“ I love coming to the Crucible and am
always encouraging friends to come...
I love the energy.”
— Patricia R.
“ The CREATE program is terrific.”
“ The Crucible is a valuable asset in the
community.”
— Tim L.
“ I love that a center like The Crucible
exists. The first time I walked in, I felt I
had found ‘my people.’”
— Heather P.
— Tim J.
“My 15-year-old son just finished the TIG
Welding class. He had an absolute blast
and learned SO MUCH...”
— Melissa P.
The Crucible produces a wide variety
of innovative performances, featuring
highly trained craft and industrial artists.
Throughout the year we also offer daytime
Open House events for the whole family,
as well as Fireside Lounge evening
gatherings.
“It is a great place to learn fascinating
skills…”
— Matt V.
Take a free tour to see what we’re all
about! Tours take place every Tuesday
night at 6pm, and every 1st and 3rd
Saturday at 3pm, except during holidays
and special events.
“You provide a crucial service to the
community by giving our youth such
amazing creative opportunities.”

teammates complete a small individual art
project or collaborate on a group piece.
In a 6-hour full-day workshop, your
group can work in multiple areas, such
as torch cutting and welding, to create
individual or group projects.
In a 6–8 hour design and build
workshop, your group collaborates and
designs a single large art project using
multiple techniques.

Learn skills and techniques in forming metal
clay for both flat and sculptural jewelry designs,
creating surface texture and enhancements.
Students will receive an in-depth orientation to
metal clay while making three pendant projects.
Your own photos, drawings or other imagery can
be fused onto glass. These images are made into
jpegs and printed with an HP Laserjet printer onto
special decal paper. The decals are then fired onto
glass, becoming a permanent decoration. When
fired, the decals turn “sepia” and colors can be
added using glass powders.

Timberframing is a traditional technique for
building large and small structures using only
wooden joinery. Prized for its structural integrity
and beauty, as well as reliance on hand skills,
timberframing is regaining popularity in modern
applications. We’ll start with an overview of the
different styles and aesthetics involved, and move
into the specific tools that are used to lay out and
cut the strong joints. Each student will get guided
practice time making sample joints, and we will
