Course Overview
The Acorn Pre-employment (PE) Basic Layout Techniques course has been
developed to provide key safety and theoretical training for those looking
to pursue a career in the welding and joining industry. Delivered in an online (or optional classroom) environment, this course puts an emphasis on
understanding the principals of laying out parts in a shop environment.
The course is taken on-line within a self-paced environment that provides an
opportunity to spend the time required to correctly learn and retain the key
concepts of parts layout. Throughout each section, there are regular self-check
quizzes followed by a final unit exam. Marks for these are automatically shared
with instructors to allow follow-up and individual assistance, if required. The goal
is to ensure that everyone entering the optional classroom recap portion of the
course has the required level of knowledge needed to allow for ongoing success
throughout the remainder of the Acorn Pre-employment courses.

supported through the use, where appropriate, of interactive 3D models, 3D
printed reference samples and videos.

Please note that these are intended as practical “pencil on paper” exercises to help the student
put into practice the theory they have learned. These exercises are downloadable from the
Online course. Completion of the exercises will require the use of several tool, including a
protractor and compass. A layout toolkit containing the necessary tools required for this course
is available from the CWBinstitute store.

Core Resources
This Acorn course provides all of the core educational resources3
needed to deliver, test and assess to the Acorn standard. This
material is intended to be supplemented by additional instructor
feedback, instruction and exercises, allowing for a high degree of
course customization to suit the ACEP’s and or instructor’s needs.
While this course can be taught as a freestanding offering, it should
ideally be incorporated into a larger welding course, allowing the
core content provided to be put into daily practice.

Acorn Educational Partner
Acorn has been designed for delivery through local education partners. In becoming
an Acorn Educational Partner, you become part of a larger group of educators and
industry representatives who are focused on providing the best possible training for
people entering or already in the workforce.
cwbinstitute
A key part of being an Educational Partner is committing to and maintaining content
delivery, testing and Assessment uniformity. As such, there are some requirements
that must be met to ensure this takes place. There are four steps to this process:
Step 1 – School or School Board Application (form AP1.1)
Step 2 – Instructor/ Assessor Application (form AP1.2)
Step 3 – School Audit and instructor interviews
Step 4 – Acorn Certification, granting of access
Under this system, each applicant school must go through a formal application process
followed by an on-site facilities audit. During the audit, the teaching facilities and
equipment will be assessed and Instructor and Assessor applications will be completed
and initially reviewed. The result of the audit and the applications will be sent to CWBi
where they will be used to determine the types of Acorn courses and assessments
that can be performed at the school. Once this has been determined, CWBi-provided
training sessions will be booked for the school’s instructors, leading to qualification
as Acorn Instructors and Assessors. Training can take from one to three weeks,
depending on instructor skill levels and knowledge and the types of Acorn courses
being taught and Assessments to be completed.
