DESIGN CRITERIA:
On this special occasion of our 20th anniversary for the Hagopian World of Rugs Student Rug Design Competition,
we would like to tap the enormous energy and talent at the College for Creative Studies to use the idea of working
together to build a better world through the observation and use of eco-friendly products.
The 2009 criteria will be to design a rug using “green” ideas and methods, e.g.; using eco-friendly fibers like wool, a
renewable resource and cotton. Using a palette of colors from nature’s bounty, the rug should be designed as a focal
point and entrants must describe the environment where the rug will be used and include a color statement.
The winning design will be reproduced as closely as possible based on design submitted. Finished rug size parameter
will be 5’ x 7’ rectangular or 6’ x 6’ square. Presentations must be surrounded by a 3” black mat. There should be no
space between the design and the mat.
If submitting a design to be translated into a 5’ x 7’ rectangular rug, the scale will be 1.5 in=1 ft and the final rendering
size (including matting) will be 7-1/2” x 10-1/2”. If designing for the 6’ square finished rug, the scale will be 1.25 in=1
ft and the rendering size will be 7-1/2” x 7-1/2”. Design should be presented in fully saturated hues that can be
interpreted by a manufacturer. No computer generated entries please. Suggested techniques include water color,
pencils, gouache, pantone paper or acrylics. No printing on the face of design and/ or mat. Previously produced
designs or designs that have received publicity in any media publication may not be submitted. We strongly recommend
that you keep a copy of your design for future reference in the event designs may not be returned. Entries not
conforming to the rules and regulations of this competition will be automatically disqualified.
