As part of the 100 commemoration of World War One, the New Zealand Prime Minister announced in Berlin in 2015 that
New Zealand will provide a scholarship for a German scholar to undertake postgraduate study at Master’s level in
New Zealand. The New Zealand Prime Minister’s First World War Centenary Peace and Security Scholarship recognises the
importance of New Zealand and Germany’s shared commitment to peace, global security and international cooperation.
The scholarship is for study at Master’s level in international relations, political science or strategic studies. Applicants are
able to apply for either a one-year (by coursework) or a two-year (by thesis) Master’s programme.
The successful applicant will undertake their study at one of New Zealand’s most prestigious universities, Victoria University
of Wellington. Based in the capital city, Victoria University is ranked first among New Zealand universities based on
research performance, and in the 2013 QS World University Rankings is among the top 150 universities in the world in a
number of subjects, including international relations and political science. Victoria University teaches 21,000 students every
year, including over 2,800 international students from 80 countries.

Please note that the successful scholarship applicant will commence their study at Victoria University of Wellington in
February 2017. Depending on the duration of their chosen programme, the scholar will complete their scholarship between
February and December 2018.
The scholarship is fully-paid, covering tuition fees, living costs, flights to and from Germany, and travel and health insurance
for the successful applicant. This scholarship is administered by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Application and selection process:
1) Please fill out the eligibility checklist. To be eligible, you need to be able to say yes or, in limited circumstances,
not applicable to every question. If you are eligible, you are able to complete the rest of the application in English.
If you are ineligible, you are unable to apply for this scholarship.
2) When submitting your application, make sure that you provide all required documentation outlined in the
application checklist below. Applications close at 4:30pm (Germany local time) on Friday 28 October 2016.
3) Scholarship applicants will be notified in November 2016 if they are successful in reaching the shortlist, in which
case they will be required to undertake an interview.
4) The successful applicant will be informed of the outcome in mid-December 2016.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST
It is important that you correctly fill out all relevant sections in this application form and include all relevant documents listed
below. Applications with unanswered questions or incomplete documentation will not be considered for the scholarship.
Please fill out this application form in English.
Supporting documents provided with this application must be certified true copies of original documents with the official
stamp and signature of a Justice of the Peace, Solicitor, Notary Public, an official from the New Zealand Embassy in Berlin or
another authorised official. Except for your passport or personal official ID, where original documents are not in English you
must provide certified true copies of official English translations. No application documentation will be returned unless
specifically requested by the applicant.
The application form must include:

A cover letter outlining why you are applying for the scholarship and how you would use the experience of the
scholarship to further New Zealand-German relations.

A signed application Declaration on page 12.

A certified copy of either the personal pages of your passport or your official personal ID (please note that if your
application is successful and you do not have a current passport that you will need to obtain one at your own cost
before travelling to New Zealand).

A certified copy of your academic transcript for all tertiary qualifications and the grading schedule for each qualification
(in English).

A certified copy of the completion or graduation certificate for each tertiary qualification that you have completed
(in English).

A certified copy of your international English proficiency test result, e.g. IELTS or TOEFL, or selection of one of the valid
reasons for not providing the results as listed in Section K on page 11. Test results must be no more than 24 months
old by the commencement of study.

If you are employed, a current job description confirming your position and outlining your responsibilities.

A current (dated) curriculum vitae – a brief history of your education, work experiences and skills.

Three references (no more than 24 months old) on official letterhead, supporting your scholarship application to study
in New Zealand. References should be provided from your current or most recent employer (if applicable) and a former
lecturer, and where possible, a relevant government or community-based organisation.

Endorsement from your employer if you are employed or self-employed.

A 500-word statement describing the specific skills and knowledge you want to gain from your proposed study and how
this will contribute to your current and/or future job.

A 500-word statement outlining your proposed research topic (if intending to undertake a Master’s by thesis).

Academic and English Language Requirements
Each qualification in New Zealand has different entry requirements. One of those requirements considers your
previous qualifications against the qualification you are applying for.
As a general rule, for those wishing to complete a postgraduate qualification with an IELTS score of 6.5 and no band
less than 6.0 is the minimum required.

Standard economy class travel from the closest departure point to a scholar’s home
(whether that be an airport, bus terminal, train station or seaport) to the town or city
in which the institution they are studying in is located, by the most direct and
economical route.
Establishment allowance
$3000 in the first academic year, to meet textbook costs and to assist with other set up
costs in New Zealand.
At the beginning of each additional calendar year, $1000 will be paid to cover the full
year. For students who have less than a calendar year remaining in their study, this
amount will be pro-rated to the nearest three-month period.
Living allowance (stipend) $480 per week paid over the scholarship offer duration and any extension of the
scholarship.
Stipends are paid fortnightly in arrears.
