Introduction The displays of art range from objects to human bodies, such as sculptures, drawings and architecture. On the other hand, in terms of human bodies, they are costumes, cosmetics, dancing and so forth. Among them, tattoo is the most special one. When walking on the streets, we often see people with some tattoos on their body. Upon seeing those people, some may feel admirable, others be curious and still others unacceptable. Why do people think so differently about tattoos? Opinions vary among people and of course tattoo is no exception. Tattoos carry unique significance, according to the patterns. However, for those not understanding that tattoos are a kind of art, tattoos are often considered a sign of gangsters. II. Literature review 1. Original A totem is here extension of the art. Totems are peoples admiration of animal or come from religious beliefs natural phenomena that become are symbolic patterns. However, letting patterns be inscribed on the skin surface is called a tattoo. At first, we just apply pigment on the skin. Afterwards, consideration of eternity is taken into, which leads to skills of cutting. Finally, tattoos original from the consideration of aesthetics and 3-dimension. History of tattoos in ancient china is recorded. Criminals had tattoos on their face at Qin Dynasty. The meaning of tattoos was distorted by history and society. Tattoos date back to Xia Dynasty. At that time Han people discriminated against the barbarians on frontier who had the custom of tattoos. Therefore, tattoos then were considered a low level act. Western “tattoo” originated in Polynesia “tattau”. It means “painting marks”. At first, 3 stimulus was implanted in skin which then caused swollen and permanent scars. The modern tattoos are colorful and beautiful decoration which was developed by Mori in New Zealand and Japanese. In western countries this is an controversial and it shows stark cultural differences. In Religious states a tattoo is regarded as vulgarity. Countries even impose a ban on tattoos yet. In filling with free thoughts, people think tattoo a fashion. However people look at tattoos, they are widely used to mark the tag house. Meanwhile, in the field of cosmetics, tattoos are used to delete bad birth marks. 2. Stories 2.1 Meaning behind Tribal Tattoos 1. Atays’s facial tattoo is a symbol of life. Man muse have good performances on the battle field or hunting in order to have a tattoo. Women must be beautiful and talented in wearing to be qualified for a tattoo, or women represent chastity and loyalty after marriage. 2. Hawaiian Tribal Tattoos Like the other tribal tattoos, tattoos in Hawaii have a hidden meaning and are believed to have magical power. They are applied during a ritual ceremony. Both men and women are tattooed with motifs like triangles, squares, crescents and animals like sharks and lizards. 3. Native American Tattoos There were used for identification, to give praise and to give magical powers or protection. 4. Haida Tattoos The people of the haida tribe decorate their objects with crests (totems) and use tattoos to represent the family crest and social status. 4 2.2 Meaning behind Celebrities’ Tattoos 1. The King of celebrity tattoos is Robbie Williams He’s a real fan of tattoo art and depending on how you count he has got 14 tattoos, including a Celtic cross, a lion, a Maori tribal, a Christian cross, two swallows, the eye of Horus, a piece of Beatles music and 7 words tattoos, 2. Johnny Depp’s tattoo expresses his quirky personality and a sense of humor. 2.3 Meaning behind Patterns 1. The cross is a very old symbol and appears in many religions around the world. A cross is a good symbol to express one’s spirituality or religion and it lends itself well to a tribal adaptation. 2. The rose and flowers in general are popular tattoo designs. Roses can mean a lot of different things; it symbolize love, respect, spiritual growth (just like the louts flowers), Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. 3. The phoenix is a mythological bird that has a very long life and arises from his ashes to be reborn. The phoenix can be found often in Far Eastern tattoo art and is a symbol of rebirth and transformation. 4. The tiger is very powerful symbol and appears often in Asian tattoo genres. It is a symbol for power, beauty and cruelty. The tribal bear tattoo (sometimes depicting a whole bear, but often just a paw print) is reminiscent of some Native American tattoos. It gives the impression of an animal totem or protective animal spirit. 5 3. Disease Those who suffer from serious diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy, skin disease, and period are not suitable for a tattoo. In addition, tattoos intended to cover scars must be done against after the wounds heal. Tattoo equipment must meet the sanitary standards. Gloves and needles can only be used once. If a tattoo machines is used, its handle has to be disinfected. (Some consider getting a tattoo a small-scale operation). The way of taking care of your brand new tattoos include: First, remove the gauze, using some worm water to gently wash the wounds. Second, ointment and tissue fluid must be washed away, and do not wipe the wounds. Third, alcohol and jodtinktur cannot be used to apply to the wounds. (Alcohol would stimulate the wounds, and jodtinktur would ruin the tattoo colors.) After days of finishing getting a tattoo, the wounds would be itchy scab, and the skin would shed due to the healing of wounds, which is regarded as a norm. Wounds cannot be scratched for fear of getting infection and color fading. Loose clothes are suggested in order that the tattoos would be squeezed. Conclusion Results from this research show that meaning in tattoos vary from age to age. Moreover, details regarding the findings were divided into three parts to further illustrate. First, due to peer influence, teenagers get tattoos to show their recognition, and furthermore to have a sense of maturation. Second, tattoos on adult’s bodies are found to bear some special meanings because they have got through the ups and downs of life.
