An eerie mood descends over Oldham in February 2017 with the Coliseum’s production of Patrick
Hamilton’s psychological thriller, Gaslight.
In an ordinary house on an ordinary road in a gloomy and unfashionable London suburb, Mrs
Bella Manningham grows more and more anxious and paranoid by the day. The gas lights seem
to dim and brighten on their own and things keep going missing. Her husband, Jack, is steadily
losing both his patience with her and his temper. But what if Bella is right; and there really is
something sinister going on in their house?
Set in 1800s London, Gaslight was one of novelist and playwright Patrick Hamilton’s most
popular works. The play gave rise to the term ‘gaslighting’ – a form of emotional and
psychological abuse in relationships.
Gaslight premiered at the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End in 1938 and opened on
Broadway in 1941 under the title Angel Street. It has been adapted for film and television multiple
times, most famously in 1944, starring Ingrid Bergman.
Oldham Coliseum Theatre’s production will be directed by Robin Herford, who is famed as the
Director of The Woman In Black, which has been sending chills down audiences’ spines on the
West End for 27 years.
