Leading water expert to discuss the State of the Colorado River in
Granby, May 17th
Anne Castle, former federal water official and resident expert at University of Colorado-Boulder law
school, will headline the Grand County State of the River meeting on Wednesday, May 17th, beginning at
5:30 for refreshments and 6:00 pm for the program at The Inn at Silver Creek, Granby. Ms. Castle and
other water professionals will explain the causes and effects of local and regional river and reservoir
operations for the upcoming season.
As part of an annual series of public water education forums, the Colorado River District and local
partners are hosting a free gathering with lots of information on what makes the Colorado River system
ebb and flow, with a focus on the Upper Colorado in Grand County. Light refreshments will be served
starting at 5:30 pm with networking and informal discussions before the program begins at 6 pm; it lasts
until 8 pm.
The keynote speaker, Anne Castle, is now a senior fellow at the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural
Resources, Energy and the Environment – part of the University of Colorado-Boulder law school. From
2009-14, she served as Assistant Secretary for Water and Science in the U.S. Department of the Interior
where she helped manage the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Geological Survey. The title of
her talk is: As Goes Grand County, So Goes the Colorado River”.
Additionally, representatives of the Bureau of Reclamation, Northern Water, Denver Water, and the
Colorado River District will be present information on “What can you expect this water year”? They will
describe in detail the projected operations at Granby, Williams Fork, Wolford Mountain Reservoirs and
key Grand County water facilities and the conditions that drive important decision making.
Other important topics to be covered include “Learning By Doing,” a unique cooperative partnership of
East and West Slope water resource stakeholders that will provide an update on their Fraser River
Restoration Project designed to maximize water use efficiencies and to optimize benefits to river health.
Rounding out the evening’s agenda is Grand County Water Information Network (GCWIN) Executive
Director Kayli Foulk who will discuss and describe on-going intensive data collection in Grand County
waters.
