OCTOBER MEETING
BROWN COUNTY SENIOR CENTER
October 15, 2009 (third Thursday of every month)
Open 7:00 pm, Program 7:30 pm
Way Out Topical Night, Silent Auction
Reminder: We need volunteer members to pick up a key from the Senior Center by 4:00 pm on the day of the
meeting. October’s volunteer is Lloyd Larscheid.
September Meeting
Vice President Darryl Ruprecht called the meeting to
order in the absence of our president, Clete Delvaux.
President Clete was reading/acting in a cemetery walk.
Rumor has it that was kind of “dead” compared to the
GBPS meeting. I know that was a real growner, but I just
couldn’t resist.
Old Business
Under old business we discussed Stamp Camp 2010 – Jim
Mostek has what sounds like an excellent location at the
Denmark H.S., he will obtain available dates in late
January through February so that we can finalize a date at
our next meeting. Ray Perry will contact club member
Jay Van Zeeland to learn more about the possible
participation of the scouts. We also discussed Baypex
’10. It will be held at St. Matthew multi purpose room on
Webster Ave. Kirk Becker suggested that we have
signage directing traffic to the parking lot behind the
church, Darryl will check on that. Ray will check on
availability of linens for the tables. Darryl will also check
on the willingness of the USPS to participate. If the
USPS is going to participate, Darryl will continue efforts
to identify a theme for a cachet and post mark.
New Business
Under new business, Ray was authorized to purchase
another box lot for club auctions. Ray asked for
volunteers to order the slide shows for the November and
February meetings. Nobody has volunteered yet, so we
will schedule a live auction for the November meeting
and are open to ideas for another program suggestion for
the February meeting. Darryl read a letter inviting us to
participate in the Einstein Project. There was discussion
on how to tie stamp collecting to science. Randy
Younger volunteered to check with the Einstein Project to
learn more about the expectations of exhibitors and report
back at the October meeting. As a result of the
elimination of slide shows from the program schedule
there was discussion about other programs. Kirk Becker
suggested that members take turns bringing an item of
philatelic interest and give a brief summary of that item. I
think this would be a great idea; it gets stamps to the
meetings, gives us all a chance to learn about different
aspects of our hobby, and gives us all a chance to see
what others are doing with their collections. What do
others think?
September Program – Show and Tell
A number (7 to be exact) of members brought show and
tell items, they are listed below.
Tom Johnston – progressive process of honey bees across
stamp, this is real “bee specking”.
Marcelo Cruz – Ads/Catalogues from various countries
promoting stamp collecting.
Ray Perry – Bavaria #18 with a cogwheel cancel – the
number in the middle designates the post office (thanks to
Mark Schroeder for that last bit of info).
Collin Dahl – Newfoundland unissued airmail, Chinese
stamp, Albania postage due.
Kirk Becker – Local stamp auction catalogue.
Randy Kuehl – Booklets from the Irish postal service
promoting stamp collecting.
Mark Schroeder – Nicaragua collection.
Thanks to all of you who participated, it was great to have
so many stamps and interesting topics to review.
Silent Auction
We had another silent auction including stamps from our
third Sedona Box Lot and stamps that Mark Schroeder
entered in the auction. If any of you wish to enter any of
your stamps in the auction, please feel free to do so – just
provide a bidding sheet that briefly describes your lot,
your name, a starting bid if there is one, and a place to
enter bids. We still have a few lots left to wrap up the last
box lot, I will put those out at the next meeting. We will
then have a live dutch auction at the November meeting to
sell the lots that didn’t sell in the silent auctions. Again, if
anyone has any lots they would like to enter in the live
auction, please feel free to do so.
October Program
The October program will be “Way Out Topical” night.
Here are the simple rules:
1. Bring a display of no fewer than 6 but no more than 12
different stamps mounted on one album page or stock
sheet.
2. Choose an appropriate title for your topical display.
3. Your stamps should depict a common topic that is
consistent with the title.
4. Place your name or initials on the back of the display.
After the business meeting, all entries will be displayed
on a table so that all members can inspect the creativity of
their colleagues. After members have inspected the
entries, each will vote for his/her favorite. Runoff ballots
will decide any ties. PRIZES: 1ST PLACE - $5, 2 ND
PLACE - $3, 3RD PLACE - $2.
