We’re going to take all their clothes and pile them in the middle of the floor so when they come out, they will have to figure out what pants and underwear is theirs. And we would do that back and forth to one another.’ The next day we put locks on all our lockers so they couldn’t get in. But this one particular time the defence set up a Lobstick Travel & Tours photo-op for the quarterbacks for the front page of the newspaper and so the photographer was there and it was a sweet set up. All of us were there posing and all of a sudden we hear this rumbling and we’re looking around, and the defence is on top of the building with three big jugs of punch and hit us, all three of us solid. We tried to run but it hit us all. That photo ended up being on the front cover of the Edmonton Sun and then after that we said we were going to be patient. We found out it was the linebackers that did that, Danny Bass and Larry Rook and we said we’re going to wait because they were watching us. So next game day we won the game and everyone came in the locker room and Danny Bass was having an interview, and we came out of nowhere with pies right after the game and pied him on national TV. We did things like that that was really fun and we became really close and we ended up winning the Grey Cup because when you put a little bit of fun and excitement into what you’re doing, you’re playing together as a team.” — Damon Allen TRAVEL ENTHUSIASTS EVERYWHERE JOIN US FOR OUR 2015 PROVINCIAL SPRING MEETING IN MOOSE JAW CONTRIBUTORS Mickey Djuric (306) 691-1263 Nathan Liewicki (306) 691-1256 Lisa Goudy (306) 691-1289 Matthew Gourlie (306) 691-1257 KIryn Tushabe (306) 691-1265 The Canadian Press is exclusively entitled to the use of publication of all news dispatched to this paper, credited to it or the Associated Press or Reuters and also the local news published herein. The numbers are underestimated because many who are homeless and live with relatives are not included. In the USA, 610,042 people were homeless on a single night in January, 2013. I’m in Phoenix for a couple of months. According to the 2014 US Census Bureau the population of Phoenix greater Metro area is 4.3 million. It’s the 6th largest city in the USA. Yesterday I struck up a conversation with a guy, one of those four-plus million, whom I assumed was living in the condo next to one my friend and I were renting. He was sitting alone on his ground-floor deck having a cigarette and swearing at his dogs because they wouldn’t shut up. He got them quieted down. I approached to within easy talking range, close to the metal fence that separated him from me, and asked how he was doing. “Fine,” he said, “just trying to get these damn dogs to shut-up. I wouldn’t trade them for the world. They’re all I have, but they can sure piss me off.” I asked how long he’d lived here. “You mean in Phoenix?” he said. “Yeah,” I replied, “how long in Phoenix?” “This is my daughters place. She works at the hospital down the street. She’s an RN. I just come here for a shower. Actually, myself, I guess you could say I’m homeless. Well, I Live well between your ears DOUG SPENCER, PhD am homeless. That’s where I live,” pointing to a 1992 worn and faded Ford Van. “I live there with my dogs. I just come here for a shower when she’s not here. At night I take my van and park in a friend’s driveway. I live there,” pointing part of me. So, I came back here; been here for a few years and a few years before that.” Yes, I thought, it could be worse, but not much. Most of us have little in common with him on the one hand but lots in common with him on the other. Were it not for an education, a job that we can count on, our determination, our perseverance, or perhaps most importantly, our luck, it could be us in that van. Many of us have been close to destitute at some point in our lives, but, often with [QUOTED] What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy? — Mahatma Gandhi again to his van. “So, have you always lived in Phoenix” I asked. “Most always. I’m 53. I worked at HP ‘til they stabbed me in the back. I lost my fiancé, lost pretty well everything, and here I am. Livin’ in that freakin’ van with these freakin’ dogs. But, it’s a place to live. It could be worse.” He continued, “I got stupid once for about 5 years when I went back to Iowa where I grew up, but my friends were gone. They wanted no the help of friends, we manage to turn it around. I don’t hold out hope that he will turn it around. I also have the sense that his daughter, unknowingly, is enabling his destitute nature. Using her apartment every once in a while seems to be blocking the urgency he might otherwise feel; the urgency required to get up, get cracking, and find a job— any job—that might be the first step he needs to improving his lot. New York - Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots and the Phantom The point is there are homeless people everywhere. I saw hundreds along the river when I lived in Sacramento. I’ve seen a few here, and others where ever I’ve lived. I even knew of one poor homeless soul in a town with a population of less than 500. It is sad. Most of them didn’t ask for it. Most of them have simply had too many poor hands dealt them. Many are returning vets with PTSD. Many are children who were born into homelessness. Others have been ravaged by drug or alcohol addiction, and of course, there are others who brought it on themselves. None of us are fully out of the woods, and it can happen to some of the least likely. For example, while in Phoenix, I met an old friend from 17 years ago. Her father had owned a Savings and Loan in the 80’s. When the market crashed his financial resources plummeted and he lost his life style. His last available cash took him south where he could avoid assaults on his pride. He ended up with nothing, stuck in a small trailer in central Mexico. He died there. As a rich man he would never have predicted such a fate. My neighbour in the van, when he worked for HP, would never have predicted his fate. None of us, as we sit in the comfort of our homes would predict such an unbecoming future. Keep from being homeless, give time and money to programs that help, and live well between your ears. Food, entertainment, stores, activities, clothing, and more. There are so many choices that we all can be easily swayed. This is when we must use the power of discipline. We are not a very disciplined culture. In general we overeat, overspend and surround ourselves by wants. So how can we break the trend? One step at a time. To take a more disciplined approach to food it’s great to track what we eat and what we spend on groceries and dining out. Try eating only at home for one week or even just a weekend if you need to start small. You will be amazed at the money you save, the time you have and how great you feel from healthier foods. Pack a lunch and snacks. This will help to practise discipline. Since you have your food with you there is no need to go out for lunch or grab something quick at the convenience store. This helps save money and your waistline. Attending an event can be a test of the will power. Have something to eat before you go so that you are not swayed by unhealthy choices. And bring an appetizer that you know is a healthy choice and that you can eat. Going out with friends? Invite your friends to stay in and go back to the good old bring your own food/drink to save on the budget and to promote healthier choices. Eat breakfast at home and make your own coffee. Breakfast and grabbing that cup of coffee can really affect the waistline and the budget even though its only small amounts of money at a time. Once you have made changes in one area of your life try expanding to other areas like overspending. Discipline takes work and is not an easy process. But your health and your wallet can greatly benefit from positive changes. APRIL 1, 2015 A5 [THIS AND THAT] Sometimes strangers, often familiar MATTHEW GOURLIE UNCUT In any long-term relationship you hope you grow together. Having a favourite band is no different. Modest Mouse first fulllength album came out in 1996 and with the new Strangers To Ourselves they continue to evolve. The album is their first since 2007’s We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. It’s another marker in their evolution and growth. It’s also a return to form and a bit of a disjointed mess at times. Even after all of these years they’re still taking chances. Seeing a band evolve is always a bit of a trap. They usually are moving away — in varying degrees — from the sound that drew you to them in the first place. However, most bands that play it safe rarely catch my attention anyway. It’s hard to fault any artist for growing even if they grow in a direction you wish they wouldn’t. I’ve given up guessing or hoping what a Modest Mouse record might sound like. Strangers To Ourselves takes some surprising turns, some are confusing, but this sounds like a Modest Mouse album and a pretty good one at that. Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock has never lacked for ambition — their first album was a double album after all — but their best work has been focused thematically and musically. This is decidedly all over the place. It’s also a new Modest Mouse. Johnny Marr’s brief era in the band is long over and this is the first album founding bassist Eric Judy didn’t play on. This is Modest Mouse’s second full album as a sixpiece band and 20 people are credited as having played on it. The band dabbles with a drum machine at times. Pistol (A. Cunanan, Miami, FL. 1996) sounds like their attempt at making an electronica song. The result might be the worst song they’ve recorded since Brock was recording demos in a shed in a trailer park. Wicked Campaign works better in a similar vein. However that track folEĞǁĚĂƚĞƐǁŝůůďĞĂĚĚĞĚĂƐ ƌĞƋƵĞƐƚĞĚ͘ tĞďƐŝƚĞŝƐƵƉĚĂƚĞĚƌĞŐƵůĂƌůLJ ǁŝƚŚ ƉŝĐƚƵƌĞƐĂŶĚĚĞƚĂŝůƐ͘ dŽǀŝĞǁŵŽƌĞŝŶĨŽƌŵĂƟŽŶ ǀŝƐŝƚƵƐĂƚ͗ ǁǁǁ͘ũŽŚŶƐƚŽŶĞĂƵĐƟŽŶ͘ĐĂ s4HURS!PR2EGULAR(ORSE3ALE s3AT!PR0RAIRIE'ELBVIEH!LLIANCE"ULLS s-ON!PRIL4RIPLE!"LACK2ED!NGUS"ULLS s3AT!PR!LL"REEDS2EPLACEMENT/PEN(EIFERS#OW#ALF0AIRS s3AT!PR#ONSIGNMENT-ACHINERY6EHICLES4OOLSATTHEAUCTIONYARD s3AT!PR#OW#ALF0AIRS"RED#OWS s3UN!PR"OULDER2IDGE!G,TD,ABUIK&ARM!UCTION s3AT-AY#OW#ALF0AIRS"RED#OWS SASKATCHEWAN’S PREMIER FAMILY OPERATED AUCTION MART YOUR BRED COW & BRED HEFIER MARKET! The transition is fairly jarring. The way we consume music now means the disjointedness of this release probably won’t ultimately matter. There’s eight or 10 really strong songs to add to the cannon of a great career to date. The opening song is the title track and it’s a departure in a better direction. The first sound you hear on the album is a cello and the first song is ballad. The first single. Lampshades on Fire, features all of the elements that gave them their mainstream breakthrough. The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box is the sort of dancy jam with post-punk guitar they were known for in the early days — and then the horns come in. As the song comes to a close it sounds like it’s going to propel into a showcase for Jeremiah Green’s intricate drumming with Brock bending notes all over the place as it builds to a crescendo. Instead, suddenly it goes the other way — the music falls away and what’s left is all of the subtle touches that were going on underneath. Sometimes even the familiar can surprise you. Surging thrills in Insurgent BY LISA GOUDY If you loved the first Divergent film, you’re going to eat up the second one. The second movie installment of the plannedfour movie franchise based on Veronica Roth’s bestselling trilogy, Insurgent, doesn’t take long to sit you in the middle of the action. Once it has its grip on you, the intensity never lets go. The Divergent Series: InsurgentDivergent picks off right after its predecessor ended. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) are hiding in the Amity faction. While Tris still feels guilty for her actions in , she has one goal and one goal alone – killing Erudite leader Jea- nine (Kate Winslet). But first, she has to face her inner demons. However, Jeanine continues to hunt divergents like Tris – people who don’t fit into any faction. She discovered a metal box containing a message from the society’s founders 200 years ago, but only a divergent can open the box. The film continues with many twists and turns and it’s a thrilling ride from start to finish. People who have read the book will notice several significant changes, but in the visual format of the film, the changes fit and make for a compelling story. The acting in the film is excellent. From Jeanine’s wickedness to Four’s per- sonal issues to Tris’ feelings of guilt she’s trying to hide away, there are many emotional points in the film that take the viewer right along with them. Woodley is a particular standout in her portrayal of Tris, most notably in one particular scene where she is overcome with emotion. Visually, the film has a lot going for it as well. From the sets to the costumes, it showcases the society’s extremes from one end to the other in a rich futuristic Chicago. With a spine-tingling ending, Insurgent ends by perfectly setting up the two-part finale after an action-packed thrill ride. [THIS AND THAT] Just say _______ it LIZZ BOTTRELL OXBOW HERALD The title says it all. My title or his title. His title read __________ You Spiritual People for Using Gratitude as a Bypass to Your Anger. The article is written by Mike Hrostoski. First off all, I love the _______ word. It sounds beautiful rolling off a person’s tongue and it can express emotion in more ways than any other English word. I know it is incredibly offensive to some people, but you must understand the generation I grew up in. The ______ word is as commonplace as terrible music. (I know I grew up in the wrong generation for music.) I came across the article one morning because a friend shared it to a social media site. It really struck a chord with me. People – like myself – who are focused on living in the present (worrying about the past or the future leaves people feeling empty, depressed and anxious) often do use gratitude as a way to accept the current situation. For example, I LOATH the “mud pit” I’m living in since snow began to melt. But I am GRATEFUL for my lovely new home. Once I change my thought from one of complaint to one of gratitude, I feel better. I feel grateful. (Yes, life is good – I am BLESSED with a roof over my head!) However, the article challenges some of these times of gratitude, arguing the point we are negating our feelings of anger. As a therapist would say, I’m bottling up my anger. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be grateful – we absolutely should! Gratitude is helpful in accepting and appreciating one’s situation. (As a side note, I’m currently journaling 21 Days of Gratitude – something I’ll share in a later column – and finding I’m a happier person because of it as I am gaining appreciation for things I normally ignore.) But there are times when a big ________ is exactly what the doctor ordered. Get that anger out! So….. _____ the mud hole I’m living in. _____ working for a means to an end. _____ dysfunctional families. _____ Keisha for running through the mud yesterday. _____ Thailand for its beautiful waterfalls. _____ people who lie to me. _____ overfishing. _____ men who don’t listen to no. Rape is NEVER okay. _____ going back to school for a third time. _____ people who throw garbage out their vehicle windows. _____ lazy people. _____ the fact it costs money to travel. _____ everyone who continually asks me when I’m having kids. _____ me for blaming others for my choices in life. _____ Hawaii for its big waves. _____ Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and B.C. for their mountains and breathtaking scenery. _____ micromanaging. _____ working for someone else. _____ plastic. She figures the possibilities are endless. When Rhonda Vegso was a little girl, she asked her mother for a wheel. Her mom got her a toy wheel – nothing like the real thing. That was a mistake. “If a child wants to — Candace Deschytza paints her sunflower creation in Studio Vegso. Inset: A potter’s paradise. Iryn Tushabe/Uncut paint, buy them paint, buy them brushes, buy them canvasses,” advises Vegso. “If they want to do pottery, don’t buy them toy wheels because they are not going to find any kind of success with it – you are better off taking them some place where they can use a real wheel. While she veered off from her earlier desire to create pottery pieces, choosing to draw and paint instead, Vegso’s passion for pottery was reignited when one of her sons suggested they take a pottery class together at the University of Regina. She has been a potter since, making illustriously beautiful pieces of stoneware she sells through her Facebook page and at craft shows. “I think pottery has a place in just about anybody’s lives,” says the artist. “Its almost therapeutic – it really calms people down.” Wanting to share her passion for creating clay works, Vegso started taking on students in her studio. Her students range from children as young as three to adults looking to further their craft as well as those, who like Deschytza, are looking for a peaceful reprieve from their daily grind. The students come to her from Regina, Moose Jaw, Briercrest and Drinkwater. With her clay work and teaching skills gaining popularity, Vegso is expanding her operation into a larger space in the small town. Her new business, the Vault Arts Centre, will house a full gallery and a coffee area. Vegso plans to organize monthly events at the new gallery including themed exhibits, live music, poetry slams and hands-on workshops. “I want to create an atmosphere where people can come and be creative and feel like they belong there.” But the Vaults Arts Centre is a venture the artist and entrepreneur cannot accomplish without sub- stantial funding. And for part of that, she is turning to the community for assistance through an indiegogo campaign launched early last week. “The campaign will give people who are interested in the Arts and having a venue like that here a chance to show their support,” explains Vegso. “And there are some really cool perks for them.” To support Vegso’s campaign and take a look at some of the perks you can get for your support, visit the campaign page at http://igg.me/at/thevault SUPPORTIVE LIVING & PERSONAL CARE HOME • Beautiful park like setting • Spacious Studio and one bedroom suites • Enjoy 3 daily home cooked meals • Wheelchair accessible CALL TODAY FOR A TOUR 525 - 7th Avenue S.E., Moose Jaw, Sask. 306.693.2323 www.chateaustmichaels.ca • 24 hour staff supervision • Weekly housekeeping and linen service • Recreational and social activities • Beauty salon and Esthetician Services Visit our other quality residences at www.integratedlifecare.ca 6705449 APRIL 1, 2015 A9 [STORIES FROM YOU] Continued from Page 4 Laurie Unreserved Public Farm Retirement Auction Lunde Graham Marzolf & Shelley Muhle Central Butte, SK | April 14, 2015 · 10 am Call to set up appointments to view or more information 44 VAUGHAN ST. -,3 $204,900 3 Bedrooms, Updated Kitchen and Bath! Brown, one of the best know and respected physicians in the city. The tragedy which has stirred Moose Jaw to the depths occurred about 4:15 o’clock on Monday afternoon in the doctor’s consulting room in the Hammond Building. Leaving his victim lying dead in his chair, Oshuk Concert continued from Page 15 10: Gerry Dee at TCU Place, Saskatoon; tickets $39-$49; 7:30 p.m. 10: Danko Jones with the Lazys at The Exchange, Regina; tickets $25 in advance; 8 p.m. 12: Marco Calliari at quiety left the room and emerging from the building on to Main Street made his way to the offices of O.R. Regan, Barrister, in the Woolworth Building, also on Main Street, still with murder in his heart, according to the version of the terrible affair which he told in a confession made subsequently. I’m Going to Shoot You Entering the barrister’s office, he pointed the murderous weapon at Mr. Regan, saying “I’ve shot Dr. Brown, and I’m going to shoot you.” Mr. Regan was, at the time, in company with Mrs. Regan, who was typing at a desk in the office, and he dropped to the floor seeking cover from his would-be murderer, who was promptly confronted by Mrs. Regan who, utterly regardless of the danger to herself, heroically placed herself in the line of fire between her husband and Oshuk, telling the latter, with flashing eyes and dauntless courage, “You’ll have to shoot me first.” For some unaccountable reason the idea of shooting a woman was repugnant to him, as he stated himself in his confession, and something came over him which held his hand. “You’re saved, this woman has saved you,” he said to Mr. The Exchange, Regina; 7:30 p.m. 17: Walter Ostanek and The Western Senators at Casino Regina, Regina; runs until April 18; for times, dates and prices visit casionregina.com. 21: Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents The Faerie Queen at TCU Place, Saskatoon; tickets $25.52$80; 7:30 p.m. 22: Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents The Faerie Queen at Conexus Arts Centre, Regina; tickets $30.35-$82; 7:30 p.m. 22: Travis Tritt at Casino Regina, Regina; tickets $65-$70; doors 7:15 p.m., show 8 p.m. 24: The Regina Jazz Society and Casino Regina present Ranee Lee with The Regina Jazz Orchestra directed by Brent Ghiglione at Casino Regina, Regina; tickets $25-$30; 6 p.m. Slayer of Dr. William W. Oct. 4, 1927 Regan, at the same time loosing the grip which he had on the gun, and lowering the point. Oshuk then broke open the weapon and withdrew the one exploded shell which had killed Dr. Brown, and the other unfired cartridges, placing them on the desk in front of which he was standing. Alex Oshuk, which is the name he adopted on coming to Canada, or to give him his proper name, Onufry Osadehuk, the name by which he was called in his native land of Austria, quietly allowed himself to be overpowered, and submitted to being handcuffed by 25: Fan Expo Regina at Brandt Centre, Regina; also on April 26; for times, dates and prices, visit fanexporegina.com. 26: Def Leppard at Brandt Centre, Regina; tickets $55-$95; doors 6:30 p.m., show 7:30 p.m. 28: Gordie Tentrees Constable Hendry of the City Police Force, who had been called in by Mr. Regan.
