General Sessions Convention Welcome Program Join us as we kick-off this Convention with the brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. Omega Ceremony Sigma Lambda Gamma will honor sisters who have passed away and left a strong legacy of sisterhood. Sister will share stories and reflect on the bonds of sisterhood from Alpha to Omega. Keynote Speaker: Michelle Guobadia Michelle Guobadia has been an outspoken advocate for Greek Life ever since graduating from the University of Delaware. She pursued her Masters in Higher Education Administration from North Carolina State University and continues to be incredibly involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life nationally. A Fall 2000 initiate of the Chi Theta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and an active and financial member of the Delta Zeta Graduate Chapter, Michelle challenges everyone around her to TRY HARDER and DO BETTER. Michelle's presentation: "Hazing Makes Your A Better Greek, and Other Stupid Myths" fits the risk management needs of the sorority. After a semester of over a dozen Hazing Incident Reports, it is time we take action to improve our organization's Pre-During-Post new member education experience. This presentation will address the WHY we haze, what myths our members believe, and how we move forward to be that Catalyst for Change in Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. SLG National Convention 2016: Delegate Packet - Page | 8 Michelle is a member of the AFA Executive Board and in her day job, she is the Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she overseas over 37 fraternities and sororities. When Michelle is not traveling to speak she enjoys staying active in the gym, spending time with her Westiepoo (West Highland white terrier and poodle hybrid)- Pascal, and crossing continents off of her list to visit (just 3 more to go!). Educational Programs Overview Each educational block is 1 hour in length. Building Positive Multicultural Environments Presenter: Sister Kamalia Alcantara Topic: Diversity & Inclusion A unique and interactive activity to open your mind, and let culture challenge and change you. Black Lives Matter: Not Just for Black Lives Presenters: Sister Danielle Ford & Sister Angelica Franklin Topic: Social Justice An informative, interactive, and historical perspective on the Black Lives Matter movement, why Black Lives Matter is an inclusive movement, and why it is important to us all. “I Can’t Deal with this Anymore!” Recognizing, Preventing, and Treating Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Presenter: Sister Nicole Nimmons (Alers) Topic: Self-Care Burnout is a state of psychological distress that can occur from prolonged stress. In our sorority, in our work, and in our personal relationships, burnout can sneak up on us. Often times, our entities may be small in number, struggling financially, and/or juggle work and families while all trying to graduate or excel in their personal careers. Learning to recognize the warning signs of both burnout and compassion fatigue is useful in a sister’s undergraduate studies and beyond. Come learn about burnout, compassion fatigue and the ways you can combat them in your own life. Learn about mindfulness and other coping strategies that you can use to minimizing stress, fatigue, and other stressors that may occur in your day to day life. How to Have Healthy Relationships Using the Five Elements of Oriental Medicine Presenter: Sister De’Nicea Hilton Topic: Self-Care How to Have Better Relationships Using the Five Elements of Oriental Medicine program is way to view our personalities according to the natural elements of our environment. By doing so, we understand the natural flow and how working WITH those elements, it can strengthen our lives. By working on the self, we can then work better with others. This presentation enables the participant to see the beauty and power of their strength, as well as what that is in others. The importance of doing so affords us the opportunity to see how we as a people work better together filling the gaps for each other as we are stronger as a larger unit. This information can be transferred to one’s various environments: school, work and home. SLG National Convention 2016: Delegate Packet - Page | 9 Finding your Authentic Self in the Working World Presenter: Sister Michelle Rodriguez Flores Topic: Leadership Development This presentation will inspire participants to bring out their authentic self as they enter their careers and thrive in the workplace. Through personal storytelling, research based examples, and proven strategies, the program will show a formula to find your authentic self and make it work for you. Dallas/ Fort Worth Alumnae Association SLG National Convention 2016: Delegate Packet - Page | 11 Frequently Asked Questions Q: A: Why are we required to attend Convention? All entities are required to send delegates to Convention per the SLG Constitution. In addition, this is an opportunity to network with sisters from across the country and for your entity to be directly involved in the governance of the Sorority. Amendments to the SLG Constitution are discussed and we will elect the new National Board of Directors leadership team that will govern the Sorority. Q: My housing was covered with my registration fee at Retreat, why not Convention? The registration fee is calculated based on the number of expected participants that will attend compared to the total cost of the event. This also determines what items will be included in the registration fee. This year, hotel reservations are an additional cost from registration fees. A: Q: A: What does my registration fee cover? The registration fee covers the three-day conference costs and materials. This includes items like delegate packets, educational speakers, banquet and luncheon meals. All monies paid towards Convention are used to maximize a delegate’s experience while providing the necessary resources to lead our entities to success. Q: A: Why can’t we stay at a less expensive hotel? Partnering with Hyatt Properties, allows our organization to provide lower hotel room rates for delegates as well as reduce Convention costs. In addition, staying in the same hotel location reduces risk and ensures our 250+ delegates are safe and accounted for at Convention. Q: A: Do I still need to wear business attire as a non-delegate? Any Sister who attends Business Meetings or Education Sessions are required to wear Business Casual attire. Remember that we are representing Sigma Lambda Gamma during Convention and our dress should reflect the event purpose.
