My goal for 2016 was to lose just 15 pounds. Only 25 to go! Ate a salad for dinner! Mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. FINE, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza. It was really good pizza. I think I'll just put an "Out of Order" sticker on my forehead and call it a day. With a quick keystroke, you can instantly add any item from the file system of a Mac – be it a file, folder, or application – into the Dock of OS X. This trick is pretty simple, first you’ll want to navigate to anything within the Finder. Try something in the /Applications/ folder, or select any item from anywhere in the Finder if you just want to give it a test to see how it works. • Once the item is selected in the Finder, you’ll hit the keyboard shortcut: Control+Shift+Command+T The selected item, folder, or app will now be in the Dock. Remember that applications will add themselves to the left side of the Dock, whereas documents or folders will add themselves to the right side of the Dock. Flash Drives? Q. Which brand of flash drive is preferable? ...and how difficult is it to partition the drive into segments? A.I have not established a “preferred” brand of flash drive, other than just a recognizable brand and cheap. I have several different brands including Sandisk, Kingston, and Toshiba (my most recent purchase from Walmart; less than $10 for 16 GB). USB 3 will be the fastest if your computer supports it; otherwise, a USB 2 will suffice and a USB 2 drive can be read even if your computer is USB 3 capable. Partitioning is easy; just use Disk Utility. Ever since then I receive the following message whenever I try to open a Pages document: ‘’The required index.xml file is missing’’. I first got this message when trying to open something sent from my iPad, that is why I updated. This morning I received the same message while trying to open a document created on this computer since it was updated. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks! A: If you had an older version of Pages ‘09 then the .app was saved in the new Application’s > iWork folder. The new version of Pages.app will also be in the Applications folder. The newer version lost many features when it was updated to v5.0. If you have both versions you'll need to decide which to use. But keep in mind you can’t open documents created in the new version with the older Pages version. I was also having the same, ‘index .xml file missing’ problem as my MacBook was trying to open my new documents with the old version of Pages, even though new system update installed the new Pages version. I had to quit the old version of Pages on my dock (right click > Quit or Apple > Force Quit) and remove it from my dock (right click, Options > Remove from Dock), and using the Finder (Finder > Go > Applications) find and open the new version of Pages (double click). Once open, the icon for the new version of Pages appeared on my dock. (Right click > Options > Keep In Dock) to keep it in the Dock. This fixed my problem, allowing my MacBook to open my newly created documents with the new version of Pages as well as open my old Pages ’09 documents in the new Pages format. I hope this helps anyone who has this problem in the future. I took the initiative and did the same with my Keynote and Numbers apps because for some reason the old versions of those were on my dock too. I kept the old version of Pages ’09 as it has many features that are not in the new Pages. The new Pages was toned down to be more compatible between OSX and iOS. You can still create documents in Pages ’09 but the document will automatically convert over to the new Pages format when you save or open it to use. Q: I enlarged the keyboard viewer using the green "plus" button. Now it fills up most of the screen and refuses all attempts at resizing. The yellow "minus" button just sends it down into the toolbar at the bottom of the screen; the red "X" closes it as expected. Even rebooting my Mac didn't fix the problem. How to solve this problem? A: You can drag any corner or edge to resize to your required dimension. There are no arrows to indicate this as there usually are but you can still resize easily. www.samug.org | [email protected] | [email protected] - [email protected] APPLE SAUCE DATE 6 PAGE OS X Perspective by David Pogue OS X is an impressive technical achievement Many experts call it the best personal-computer operating system on earth. But beware its name. The X is meant to be a Roman numeral, pronounced "ten." Don't say, "oh, es, ex." You'll get funny looks. Note: Apple no longer refers to its computer operating system as Mac OS X. Now it's just "OS X," without the "Mac" Why? Apple says it's to match up better with iOS, its operating system for the iPhone and iPad . Reader Button by David Pogue ~ the missing manual The Reader button in Safari’s address/search bar is amazing. With just one click (or press Shift -⌘ R), it eliminates everything from the Web page you’re reading except the text and photos. No ads, blinking, links, banners, promos, or anything else. The text is also changed to a clean, clear, font and size, and the background is made plain white. Basically, it makes any Web page look like a printed book page and it’s glorious. To exit Reader, click the same Reader button again. Best. Feature. Ever. www.samug.org | [email protected] | [email protected] - [email protected] APPLE SAUCE PAGE Using Pages for Presentation Slides 7 ☛ by Fred Hathorn A lot of folks use Keynote for creating presentation slides — I like to use Pages instead. The reason I use Pages is that I’m currently doing a lot of scale drawing of features for a new house we’re building that I send to our builder. In Pages you can create drawings that are precisely scaled, for example I frequently scale my drawings at 1” = 1’. So if I draw a rectangle and set the height to 1” and the width to 2”, it represents an object that is 1’ high by 2’ wide. You can probably do this in Keynote as well, but since I know Pages and don’t know Keynote, I prefer to stick to the tool I know. As for the actual presentation, I think a PDF file works better than either a Pages or Keynote file. To export to PDF, just do File > Export > PDF for the entire file. You don’t have to worry about exporting individual pages because this will export every page in the file. This gives you a file to put on the SAMUG Website that everyone can open even if they don’t have Pages or Keynote. And it gives you a very easy to use file for the actual meeting presentation that opens w/o a startup page, right to the first page of your file. www.samug.org | [email protected] | [email protected] - [email protected] APPLE SAUCE Change Apple Watch Wrist & Button Orientation from Left to Right If you want to change the wrist in which you wear Apple Watch, you can do so without having a cumbersome button experience by choosing to switch the devices orientation. This also insures the devices screen will show properly, otherwise if you simply move the Watch from one wrist to the other, the display would be upside down. Also, you may find this helpful if you want to wear the Apple Watch on the same wrist, but simply wish to change the devices digital crown orientation as well. How to Change Wrist & Digital Crown Orientation on Apple Watch Changing the Apple Watch wrist orientation from left to right (or vice versa), which basically flips the Watch, takes just a moment on the device itself : 1. Open the Settings app on the Apple Watch and go to “General 1. Go to “Orientation” and choose “Left” or “Right”, which will offer the following changes: Left – the Digital Crown and power button will be on the right side of the device Right – the Digital Crown and power button will be on the left side of the device essentially flipping the Watch upside down From Dana’s Desk I love being over 70. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as: Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as: NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0 and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? A: "First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Please enter command: I thought you loved me.html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Farting and Snoring Loudly Beta. Whatever you do, DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.) In addition, please, do not attempt to re-install the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend: Cooking 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7.
