3/2Y Term 1 Newsletter Dear Parents and caregivers, Welcome to the new school year. We have some exciting things planned this term and I look forward to a productive time. A warm welcome to our new students Yander Lelah and Sherry Duan. We would also like to congratulate Luke Descoeudres and Amelie Lim for being selected as our SRC representations. Weekly Schedule Monday Homework distributed (from week 5) Tuesday Scripture Sports in school (Sports uniform to be worn) Wednesday Thursday Library Robotics (Ms Garlick) Music Drama Friday PSSA/School Sport (Sports uniform to be worn) Homework collected Homework Homework will be issued on Mondays and collected on Thursdays. The purpose of Homework is to consolidate the skills learnt at school. Homework comprises of spelling activities, reading for 20 minutes per night and Mathletics. Throughout the year, students will be required to complete various projects. If your child is unable to complete homework for any reason, please send a note or email the teacher. English This term we will be focusing on: the Seven steps to writing success grammatical sentence construction appropriate punctuation narratives and informative text. Reading Students will be reading a variety of texts and focus on a range of decoding and reading comprehension strategies throughout the term. Reciprocal reading groups will be introduced and students will learn how to discuss text, develop their vocabulary, summarisation and predicting skills. Mathematics In mathematics, we aim to nurture creative and persistent problem solvers while improving mental computation. Through collaborative problem solving groups, open-ended and hands-on activities, students will: learn how to apply effective addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies (written and mental) calculate amounts of money accurately read and calculate time find patterns in numbers and shapes measure length and area apply fractions and probability collect and interpret data. HSIE and Science For Geography, students will study a unit called, the Australian continent. They will describe Australia’s major natural and human features such as deserts, rivers, mountains and the location of Australia’s states, territories and major cities. For Science, Year 2 students will investigate sources of light and sound, how they are produced and how light and sound travel. Students’ understanding of the role of light and sound in our lives and our community will be developed through hands-on activities. Year 3 students will examine different heat sources and how heat moves from one object to another. Through hands-on activities, students will explore the difference in conductivity of materials. Technology Each week, 3/2Y looks forward to the design programs run by Ms Garlick. The Lego robotics program teaches students to utilise their programing skills to execute commands. During class computer time, students will be consolidating their word processing skills and developing their information and media literacy skills. PDHPE PSSA Modball and Cricket begin in Week 4 for selected students. Those staying at school will participate in activities to develop various small ball and game skills. During PDH lessons, students will learn how to work together in small groups and exercise various social skills. We shall continue to reinforce our PBEL school expectations. Behaviour focus 1, 6 and 11 Uniform focus Saying please and thank you. Communicating with courtesy links to being respectful. Movement around the school such as walking to assembly. Students should walk in one line. This links to being safe. 1, 6 and 11 3 and 8 Being prepared each day with the correct equipment. This links to being a learner. 3 and 8 4 and 9 Listening and communicating positively and with courtesy. This links to being respectful. 4 and 9 5 and 10 Caring for personal belongings, such as hats and lunchboxes. This links to being respectful. 5 and 10 2 and 7 2 and 7 Be seen in green – our school colours are green and white. No other colours please. You rock with the proper socks! Socks are to be green with the formal school uniform and white with the sports uniform. No anklets or socks that disappear into the shoes. Do the right thing and tuck your shirts in and bling is not in.! Boys, the formal white school shirt needs to be tucked in. Jewellery is for out of school wear – leave it for home where it’s safe and fun to wear. Slap on the hat Our green school hat is part of our uniform. Beanies and other head wear are for out of school wearing. Wear your uniform with pride and you’ll have luck on your side. Wear your correct school uniform with pride and respect.
