1980 1980 Looking back... Forward Looking annual report for 2009 Dear Friends, During 2010, The Family Place will be looking back on its 30 years of service to Washington’s families. Much more important, we are looking forward to being a source of critical help for families for as long as we are needed. We renew our pledge to be there for families in need, knowing we can count on the loyal support of the hundreds of individuals and organizations that give so generously to support The Family Place’s mission. During our 30 years in Washington, leaders have come to recognize the importance of family support, education, and services during the first years of a child’s life. Interventions that contribute to families’ stability and to the capacity to nurture their children help set a new generation on the path to well being, success in school, and productive lives. This report emphasizes The Family Place’s accomplishments during 2009. But first let’s look back to TFP’s very first client... 1980 Looking back... On a cold late November day in 1979, Rosa, a nineteen-year old girl, hobbled on crutches into the half-painted basement on Columbia Road where volunteers were cleaning up to prepare for the opening of a new family support center. A hospital emergency room nurse had sent her there to get help. Newly arrived from El Salvador, speaking no English, and unable to find the cousins she intended to meet up with, Rosa had slipped on the ice, fallen down a flight of stairs, and broken her leg. The hospital set her broken bone and they also diagnosed her pregnancy. The Family Place was on its way. In 2009, nearly 600 families came to the cozy row house on 16th Street NW that TFP has owned since 1986. As it turns out, the majority of the thousands of families who have participated at TFP over the years are Spanish-speaking immigrants from Central America and Mexico. We’ve also provided services to hundreds of African-American families and to people of many diverse backgrounds. They have shared their stories, each one unique, but united by common threads: crisis, uncertainty about where to turn, poverty, a pregnancy or a child at risk, and a desire for a helping hand. The Family Place was able to stand by Rosa through many steps and missteps. She found her cousins, entered prenatal care, delivered a healthy baby girl and, some years later, became an American citizen. She has done well. In 2010, it is likely that an even greater number of families will come to The Family Place. Attracted by our programs and hospitality, they are driven by the pressing need for services, education, advice, referrals, and companionship. Virtually every one of our families feels the impact of the recession. With our programs we seek to help them weather the storm, and bring their children through safely to a better life. Thanks to all of you who are making this possible. The Staff, Board, Participants, and Volunteers of the Family Place www.thefamilyplacedc.org | THE FAMILY PLACE ANNUAL REPORT 2009 | 1 2009 At The Family Place In 2009 five hundred and ninety seven families were served. This represents an increase of 43% from 2008 when 416 families participated. The increase, we think, is due to the severe and worsening economic stresses our families experienced. Since the numbers of The Family Place staff did not increase – also due to the stress of recession on our donors – this meant our devoted staff had to work harder, and rely more on volunteers and collaborative work with other organization. Our revenues for 2009 remained steady: $635,276. Special Activities 3 Catalogue for Philanthropy: The Family Place was selected to be featured in the 2009/10 Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington. Sixty-eight exceptional nonprofits were chosen from a field of over 250 applicants. “Charities were selected for excellence, innovation, cost-effectiveness, and financial transparency—and for what they can teach us about the extraordinary ways that philanthropy works,” said Barbara Harman, Executive Director of the Harman Family Foundation and President of the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington. She continued to say that “these are certainly among the best small charities in the Washington, DC region.” 3 “Soccer Moms for Obama” honored The Family Place at its Presidential Inaugural Ball on January 17th. They also spent a day volunteering at The Family Place. Members of The Family Place family also celebrated The People’s Inaugural Gala Weekend and Ball in January with other community organizations and friends. 3 Holiday parties, graduation ceremonies, and “field trips” are eagerly anticipated and well attended. Parents and children went to the Public Library for story time and to sign up for library cards. The Air and Space Museum, the Zoo, the Washington Monument, and nearby places to swim were popular destinations. We participated in a Stroller March at the Capitol to support legislation benefiting children’s health, and celebrated Children’s Day with toys, gifts and a barbecue in Rock Creek Park. 2 | THE FAMILY PLACE ANNUAL REPORT 2009 | www.thefamilyplacedc.org 3 Gala Art Exhibition Our 2008 annual report contained a paragraph describing the Gala Art Exhibition held at the Mexican Cultural Institute in October of that year.
