EDUCATION:
University of New Mexico
AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
Coaching, NBA, WNBA, D-League, Scouting, Player Development, and Community
Relations.
GENERAL TOPIC AREAS:
Coaching, Parenting and Life Skills.
BIOGRAPHY:
Michael Cooper brought extensive playing experience and valuable NBA and WNBA coaching knowledge to the
D-League. Following his 12 year playing career, he served as Special Assistant to Lakers general manager Jerry West for
three years before joining the Lakers coaching staff in March 1994. He took over the basketball operations responsibilities
for the Thunderbirds team after serving as an assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets (2004-05), including a stint as interim
head coach in 2004. Coach cooper’s first season with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds resulted in two NBA call-ups (Chuck
Hayes – Houston Rockets & Andreas Glyniadakis) and the 2006 D-League Championship. Currently Michael Cooper is the
Head Coach for the newly owned L.A. Sparks of the WNBA.
Prior to the Nuggets, Cooper had a stellar head coaching run with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. In four-plus seasons,
Cooper guided the Sparks to a 116-31 (.789) regular season record and four playoff appearances. His team captured backto-back WNBA Championships in 2001 and 2002 and made the Finals three consecutive years. In his first year as head
coach with the Sparks, he earned the 2000 WNBA Coach of the Year award after leading the Sparks to their best record in
franchise history (28-4).
Cooper played two seasons with the University of New Mexico Lobos (1976-78) and was selected to the Lobo Hall of
Honor in 1992. A junior college transfer, Cooper was named to the first team All-Western Athletic Conference and aided
the Lobos to the conference title as a senior, averaging 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.
Drafted out of New Mexico by the Los Angeles Lakers in the third round (60th overall), “Coop” became an integral part of
the “Showtime” Lakers teams of the 1980s with his great defensive talents. He earned eight NBA All Defensive Team
selections – including five First Team honors – and was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1987. He spent his
entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers and was a member of five NBA Championship teams (1980, ’82, ’85, ’87, and
’88).
In addition to being a success on the court, Cooper was recognized for his community efforts off the court. During the
1985-86 season, Cooper, along with New York’s Rory Sparrow, was selected by the Pro Basketball Writer’s Association as
the annual recipients of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. The Award, presented annually since 1975, is the oldest
citizenship and community service award in the NBA and is named for the second commissioner of the league. The award
honors an NBA player or coach for outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Retiring after the 1989-90 season, he was ranked among the club’s career top 10 in three-point field goals (428), games
played (873), minutes played (23,635), steals (1,033), blocked shots (523), assists (3,666), defensive rebounds (2,028),
offensive rebounds (741) and free throw percentage (.833).

AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
Team Management, Stadia Development. Sports Legislation, Sports
Law, Sports Media, and Journalism.
GENERAL TOPIC AREAS:
Basketball, Journalism, Team Management, NBA, WNBA & D-League
BIOGRAPHY:
David Kahn, 46, worked for nearly nine years in the front office of the Indiana Pacers, primarily as the No
2 person in the organization to the team president, Donnie Walsh. As General Manager, Kahn oversaw
the business and basketball sides of the Pacers; represented the Pacers on the NBA’s Competition
Committee; and managed a staff of over 120 when the team moved into Conseco Fieldhouse in 1999.
Kahn is credited both in Indiana and in league circles with the successful launch of Conseco Fieldhouse,
beginning in 1995 with local lobbying efforts and culminating in the Fieldhouse’s opening to worldwide
acclaim in 1999. Considered by many to be the world’s finest indoor sports arena – and the only retro
arena – the Fieldhouse transformed the Pacers’ franchise, elevating the team into the top third of the
league in local revenues, despite being located in what was then the NBA’s fifth-smallest market.
During Kahn’s time in Indiana the Pacers played in the NBA Finals once and the Eastern Conference
Finals on three other occasions. The franchise also during this time was awarded a WNBA franchise while
Conseco Fieldhouse developed into the Midwest’s mecca for sporting events such as the Big Ten men’s
basketball tournament and world-championship boxing.
After re-locating with his family to Portland, Oregon, Kahn in November 2002 became the head of the
Oregon Stadium Campaign, the private entity that led Portland’s drive for a Major League Baseball
franchise. Despite a poor local economy and resistance from many, the Oregon Legislature passed a 150
million construction bill for a baseball stadium in August 2003, following intense lobbying and public
education by Kahn and the campaign. Kahn then transitioned to the public side in 2004, serving as the
Mayor’s Special Advisor on baseball.

THUNDERBIRDS
COACHING STAFF
Jeffrey Ruland
Head Coach - Albuquerque Thunderbirds
EDUCATION:
Iona College
AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
Coaching, NBA, College, Scouting, Player Development, and Community Relations.
GENERAL TOPIC AREAS:
Coaching
BIOGRAPHY:
Ruland becomes the Thunderbirds second overall Head Coach in the team’s third season, taking the reins from former Head
Coach and current Head Coach of the Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA) Michael Cooper.
Ruland was an All-American honoree during his three-year career, helping lead the Iona Gaels to a 69-21 record, including
back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Iona was ranked #6 in the country according to Sports Illustrated and
defeated eventual national champion Louisville, 77-60, at Madison Square Garden on February 21, 1980.
As a student-athlete, Ruland had an immediate impact during his first season playing for the Gaels. He led all Division I
freshmen in scoring and rebounding, averaging 22.3 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. During the following two seasons,
Ruland continued to impress, twice leading the Gaels to the NCAA Tournament and twice receiving All-American accolades.
He ended his collegiate career as the college’s third all-time leading scorer (1,855 points/20.8 ppg) and second leading
rebounder (1,067 rebounds/12.0 rpg). In addition, he is Iona’s career leader in field goal percentage (63.5%). Ruland passed up
his final year of college eligibility to turn pro.
Ruland was drafted by the Golden State Warriors as an undergraduate in the second round (25th overall) of the 1980 NBA
draft, which included such names as Kevin McHale, Kiki Vandeweghe, Rick Mahorn, Larry Smith and Kurt Rambis. Ruland
opted to play one season of professional basketball in Barcelona, Spain, where he averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds per
game. His draft rights were traded by Golden State to Washington in 1981 for a second round draft pick.
Ruland spent five seasons in Washington and led the Bullets in rebounding and field goal percentage each of those five years.
He was selected to the 1984 and 1985 Eastern Conference All-Star teams and named to the 1982 NBA All-Rookie squad. His
best season in Washington, and as a professional, came during the 1983-84 campaign when he averaged 22.2 points and 12.3
rebounds while shooting 57.9% from the floor. Following the 1983-84 season, Ruland suffered a left knee injury. Prior to the
1986-87 campaign, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Moses Malone, Terry Catledge and two future first round draft
picks. He played in just five games for the Sixers before his knee injury forced him to retire. Following a five-year layoff,
Ruland came out of retirement in 1991 and signed with the 76ers. He played in just 13 games before a tear to his Achilles
tendon forced him to miss the remainder of the season. His last stint in the NBA came during the 1992-93 season when the
Detroit Pistons signed him to a free agent contract. He played in 11 games before being waived in January of 1993.
During his 332-game NBA career, that spanned eight seasons, Ruland averaged 17.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game while
shooting 56.4% from the field.
For the past eight years Ruland had been Head Coach at his Alma Mater (Iona College), in which he compiled 137 wins, an
average of more than 17 wins per season and guided the Gaels to three 20-win seasons, three MAAC Championships and three
NCAA Tournament appearances.

Professional Highlights: Pittsnogle was not chosen by any of the teams in the 2006 NBA Draft. Although Pittsnogle was predicted in
most mock drafts as being chosen in the early-to-mid second round, he went undrafted and thus became a free agent. On July 25,
2006, Pittsnogle signed a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics. On October 20, 2006 the Celtics waived Pittsnogle
In November of 2006 he signed with a team in the CBA (Pittsburgh Xplosion).Pittsnogle was announced to the CBA All-Star game on
February 6th after posting 23.5 points per game. He also currently holds the CBA single-game record for points scored with 44, which
he accomplished earlier in his rookie season. In March of 2007 the Xplosion placed him on the team's Inactive Reserve List due to
tendinitis in his non-shooting elbow. Even with the injury, he was considered to be a leading candidate for the CBA's Rookie of the
Year (award) as he was averaging 19.4 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 86.8% from the free throw line.
Pittsnogle played for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers on their 2007 Summer League team in early July of ‘07.
College Highlights: Pittsnogle saw action as a freshman, particularly against Rutgers, when he posted a West Virginia eight-best
rookie record 26 points. He also added 24 points against Syracuse and a career-high nine rebounds.
Until late in the 2004-05 season, Pittsnogle primarily came off the bench for the Mountaineers. However, on February 3, 2005 starting
center D'or Fischer came down with a cold and was unable to play against Pittsburgh. Beilein replaced Fischer in the starting lineup
with Pittsnogle, who proceeded to score 27 points in an upset of the Panthers. He remained in the starting lineup for the rest of the
season, and quickly came to the forefront during the 2005 NCAA Tournament, when he scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in a
victory against Texas Tech in the Sweet 16 round, and then scored 25 points (on 9-for-15 shooting) and grabbed 5 rebounds in a 9385 overtime loss to Louisville.
On May 3, 2005, Pittsnogle declared for the 2005 NBA Draft. He did not hire an agent, which meant that he still had the option to
reverse his decision. On June 10, he decided to withdraw from the draft and return to WVU for his senior year.
His collegiate career came to an end following a 74-71 loss to Texas in the Sweet 16 of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Pittsnogle,
having just returned from a bloody nose, tied the game with 5 seconds remaining with a three-pointer, but Texas guard Kenton Paulino
hit a three pointer at the buzzer for the win.
High School: He led Martinsburg to two straight AAA state tournament appearances. As a senior, he averaged 20 points and 12
rebounds per game and was named first-team all-state He also played in the North-South all-star game.
Personal: Parents are Lisa Son of Kevin and Tammy Pittsnogle. In the CBA he was named as CBA All-Star and the CBA All-Rookie
Team. He was a Big East Academic All-Star. He majored in athletic coaching education. Married on Oct. 9, 2004
