550) Absolom got people to turn away from King David and to
himself
2 Samuel 15:2-6
He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to
the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed
2
before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What
town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of
the tribes of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your
claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king
to hear you.” 4 And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed
judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could
come to me and I would see that he gets justice.”
5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him,
Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss
him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who
came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of
the men of Israel.
At what point does a wish to have something become a sinful desire, coveting something?
Why is it important for us to turn to Jesus as soon as we know we are having sinful desires?
(think of #544)
Key Point 1:
Coveting is a craving or sinful desire for something God doesn’t want
us to have, which may lead us to sinful words and actions.
2. What does God teach me about the coveting that goes on in
my heart?
Q121: What kind of desires does God want us to have in our hearts?
557) list of the types of things we should think about
Q122: What will holy desires lead us to do?
563) finders keepers?
Q126: Why do we have so many sinful desires?
576) sinful nature - anything good?
577) every inclination (natural tendency)
583) born separated from God - original sin
What are some of the types of things (#557) that we should think about?
If we find something that doesn’t belong to us, what should we do with it?
How much of our human nature wants to be against God? (#577)
How does #583 show the need of a Savior?
Key Point 2:
I deserve death and hell because since birth I have had a rebellious
sinful nature – one that fills my heart with sinful desires. (need for a
Savior)
3. What does God teach me about the holy desires I have in my
heart?
Q128: What punishment do we deserve because of our sinful nature
and the sinful desires it produces in us?
588) wages = payment
Q130: What is the only reason that we have pure and holy desires in
our hearts?
591) God gives the new heart to love him
593) new self to be like God, thinking like God in all things
594) finding joy in following Jesus
Rewrite #588 in your own words.
What does it mean that we have a “new person” created in us through faith?
Key Point 3:
By bringing me to faith, God has given me a new heart that loves
God’s will and enables me to have holy desires.
4. What is the result of my having both a sinful nature and a
new heart?
Q131: What is the result of our having both an old Adam and a new man in
us?
596) internal spiritual conflict
Q132: How are we strengthened in this conflict to fight the old Adam and to
follow the new man?
597) through faith this happens
598) Christ lives in me
Give an example or explanation of the spiritual conflict inside of us.
If we are strengthened in our faith to fight the old Adam, why is being in God’s Word
regularly so important?
Key Point 4:
As a result of my having both a sinful nature and a new heart,
constant battles go on in me between the two. Only as I grow in faith
in Jesus will my new heart win more and more of these battles.
What I’ve Learned:
God wants me not to covet, warning me about my
sinful heart and its desires. He also gives me a new
heart to fight these desire.
