From the Rabbi’s Study
Why I Love Inconvenient Holidays
Rabbis are
notorious for
their corny,
nerdy, rabbinic
sense of humor.
I am sorry to
tell you I am no
different. One
of my favorite
responses that always elicits a groan is
when someone asks when is a Jewish
holiday. I respond with the Hebrew
date.
“Rabbi, when is Rosh
HaShanah this year?”
“The first of Tishrei – just like
it is every year.”
This year, we will all hear
lots of complaints about how “early”
the High Holy Days are. We will,
though, hear precious few complaints
about how late Labor Day is. This
makes for interesting trivia games, like
the fact that this year will be the only
time EVER in human history that
Thanksgiving and Chanukah overlap.
There is a bigger idea here
though, that is critical in how we
consider our Jewish identity. The
bigger idea is that the Jewish calendar
has its own schedule, and it does not
conform to what is convenient for us.
We have the blessing of keeping time by two clocks and life by two

calendars. It allows us to see the world
through unique lenses of perspective and be both insider and outsider
simultaneously.
If we only choose to celebrate
or observe that which is convenient,
we lose that tension. Inconvenient
holidays “out” us, and force us to tell
our children, our coworkers and ourselves that there is something greater
than our typical routine. If we put a
holiday on the “day that works best so
the most people will come,” we are not
forced to prioritize.
So, be grateful for the inconvenience, and use it as a jumping off
point for a conversation about how we
create priorities in our lives, how we
choose and when life is more important than convenience.
Shalom,
Rabbi David M. Glickman

Recap of the Congregational Meeting
Although we had a wonderful
turnout for our Congregational Annual Meeting on July 1st, there were
several of us that were traveling or
otherwise could not attend. I promised that I would devote the space of
this article for a recap of the meeting
for those who could not attend.
In our first order of business,
we elected the nominated slate of Officers and Directors. I am excited to
work with our new members of the
Board- Chuck Gasser, Dayna Gershon, Jason Krakow, Dana Schwartz
and Shira Zigler.
I reported on the status of the
sale of the Wornall campus. On July
8th, our sale to Van Trust closed for
a final sale price of $2,352,500. This
was $150,000 less than the original
contract with the buyer as a result of
the discovery of larger than antici-
pated asbestos abatement costs to be
incurred by the buyer in the demolition of the building. I once again thank
Mark Eisemann and Ron Coppaken
for their hard work in the sales process
and to Mike Rogovein, Chuck Gasser, Elaine Levine and our custodial
staff for the hours of hard work they
spent removing our important items at
Wornall and preparing the building’s
contents for sale.
Gina Kaiser presented a preliminary report of the Facilities Committee of the Strategic Planning Group.
Gina explained that the committee
consisting of Ron Goldsmith, Joel
Goldman, Bob Palan, Alicia Klein and
Josh Sosland are studying a variety of
options for the optimum facilities’ location and configuration for our congregation. As a part of that process, the
committee will be seeking input from

Homemade Crepes or Blintzes (Parve)
Editorial Comments
Peter and I and our family wish
the entire CBS community a L’Shanah
Tovah. The High Holy Day Season is
a time of renewal. It is a time to renew
our lives and strive to be better people.
At CBS we are beginning a new year
Bev Newman
with a new Director of Congregational
Scroll Editor
Learning and new learning opportunities
for both our children and for us. We also begin a new
year with fewer expenses for our congregation and the
ability to implement new programs.
I encourage everyone to be a part of our exciting
new beginnings in the coming year. Renew your commitment to CBS.
An Adult Ed Opportunity
Would you like to discuss the weekly Torah portion with other congregants? The monthly Parashat
Hashavua group will meet Shabbat morning, August 17 at
9 am in the CBS Board Room. This ongoing opportunity
takes place every third Shabbat of the month. For more
information, contact Svetlana Sorkin, 913-488-9042. All
are welcome.
Ingredients:
•
3 eggs
•
1 1/4 cup of water
•
1 cup flour
•
a pinch of salt
Preparation:
1.Mix eggs and water. Mix flour and salt in
a separate bowl.
2.Whisk flour mixture into egg and water
mixture until smooth. The batter should be
thin. If it is too thick, add some more water.
If it is lumpy, let it sit for 5 minutes and
whisk again.
3. Spray a non-stick frying pan with non-stick cooking oil spray.
Heat the pan over medium-high heat.
4. Pour just enough blintz mixture into the hot pan to lightly cover
the pan. Rotate the pan so the batter covers the whole bottom.
5. When the crepe starts to pull away from the side of the pan, slip
a spatula under it and turn it out onto a plate to cool. You only
need to cook the blintz on one side. No need to flip it.
6. Continue steps 3, 4 and 5 above, until all the batter is gone,
stacking the blintzes on top of each other on the plate.
7. Fill the crepes with your choice of filling and fold or roll them
over the filling. Kids like Nutella or jelly for a great treat. Adults
like sauteed mushrooms, mashed potatoes, or cheese for a festive
appetizer.
Our Community
Day of Discovery
Selichot program
Mark Your Calendars for “Day of Discovery –
Explore the Joy of Jewish Learning in Kansas City”at the
Jewish Community Campus on Sunday, August 25. Study
with the community’s finest Jewish educators, rabbis and
cantors leading sessions on a wide range of topics.
Registration and continental breakfast begin at 8:45
am. Study sessions begin at 9:30 am. Lunch will be served
from 12:15 –1:00 pm and a dessert reception will conclude
the day. Registration starts in early August.
The program is cosponsored by The Rabbinical Association of Greater
Kansas City, Jewish Community Center’s Department of Jewish Life and
Learning, CAJE/Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas
City, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, Village Shalom and
area congregations.
For more information, visit kcrabbis.org or contact
Annette Fish, Program Director, Rabbinical Association of
Greater KC, [email protected] or 913-327-4622.
This year’s community-wide Selichot program
will begin with a dessert reception at 8:15 pm, Saturday,
August 31, at Congregation Beth Torah, 6100 West 127th
Street.
After Havdalah, which will begin at 8:45 pm,
three vignettes excerpted from the award-winning play The
Gates are Closing by Merle Feld, will be presented as staged
readings by local actors. Each vignette will grapple with issues of communication, trust, forgiveness, repentance and
reconciliation-- themes appropriate to the Selichot service.
After each, a panel of rabbis will offer personal responses
related to teshuvah and the Days of Awe.
The Selichot service will begin at 10:10 pm, led by
local rabbis along with Beth Torah Music Director, Linda
Sweenie, Cantor Sharon Kohn and a community choir.
Members of the Jewish community who have an interest in
being a part of the community choir should contact Linda
Sweenie, Music Director at Congregation Beth Torah,
[email protected] or 913-498-2212. Vocalists
should have choir experience and be available for two
rehearsals on August 19, 7:30-8:15 pm and August 26,
7:30-8:15 pm.
