Itinerary Key: Breakfast Lunch Dinner Drink Afternoon Tea Longer walks and steps may be involved on this day 1 Fly to Zurich Today you will meet your One Traveller representative and your fellow travellers at Heathrow Airport before boarding the flight to Zurich. On arrival your Tour Manager will organise the onward coach to take you to the Hotel Waldstätterhof for your four-night stay. Evening: after a chance to settle in and relax there will be a hosted welcome drinks reception followed by a three-course evening meal with included drinks. 2 Lucerne Morning: located one hour’s scenic drive along the lakeshore is the ‘Lion city’ of Lucerne. You will visit the Lion Monument before a short fascinating guided walking tour which will take in the city walls and the famous Chapel Bridge. Afternoon: your guide will recommend the best places to have lunch (at own cost). Perhaps try a traditional cheese fondue! There will be free time before returning to the hotel to relax and change for dinner. Evening: dinner with drinks in the hotel. 3 New Year’s Eve – Glacier Express and Gala evening Morning: after a lavish buffet breakfast you will drive to join the Glacier Express in first-class panorama carriages for a two-and-a-half hour scenic ride. The journey begins in Chur (at an elevation of 1922 ft) and continues through the valleys of Grissons to Disentis Mustér, the heart of Switzerland’s Romansch speaking population, and then on to the Furka Oberalp Pass where the train ascends to 6,766ft (the highest point of the Glacier Express and the source of the Rhine). Afternoon: the journey finishes in the snowy world of the resort of Andermatt where you will meet your coach and return via Altdorf, stopping at the William Tell monument (the very site of the famous apple shoot) before returning to the hotel to prepare for the gala New Year’s Eve celebrations. Evening: New Year’s Eve gala dinner, in the beautifully decorated salon with round tables for eight to ten people. After a welcome by the hotel manager, festivities will begin: lavish hors d’oeuvres buffet, main course with ceremonial chefs’ procession, then an exquisite devilish dessert buffet, decorated with ice and food sculptures and fruit carvings. The band will play between courses and well into the night. A fireworks display shortly after midnight will herald in the New Year, when the sounds of the fireworks dramatically ricochet across the mountains. All house wines, beer, juices, soft drinks, tea and coffee are included throughout the evening and into the wee hours! A glass of Champagne will also be served at midnight. 4 New Years Day - Engleberg Morning: a late start is planned today for the Engelberg excursion. Engelberg is the home of the ski jump championships and a monastery famous for its own cheese. Why not enjoy a cheese fondue or a horse and sleigh ride or perhaps take the ride to the top of Mount Titlis (over 10,000 ft) via the panoramic rotating cable car (at own cost), hopefully for an unsurpassable panorama. Evening: farewell drinks reception followed by dinner with included drinks. 5 Lake cruise and flight home Morning: after breakfast enjoy an included cruise on Lake Lucerne and have time to wander the resort of Brunnen to complete a wonderful New Year’s break. Afternoon: transfer to Zurich Airport for the return flight to the UK. Included excursions First Class Glacier Express excursion with a visit to Altdorf (site of William Tell's apple shoot) After a civilised buffet breakfast comprising of a wide range of Swiss cheeses you will depart on the Glacier Express excursion in first class panorama carriages for a 2 ½ hour scenic ride. The journey commences in Chur (set at an elevation of 586 metres) and continues through the valleys of Grissons to Disentis Muster, the heart of Switzerlands Romansch speaking population and then onto the Furka Oberalp pass where the train ascends to 6,766ft the highest point of the Glacier Express and the very source of the Rhine. The train journey ends at the ski resort of Andermatt (an eternal world of ice and snow) where free time will be given to explore before returning to the hotel by coach. The journey back will be via Altdorf stopping at the William Tell monument (the very sight of the famous apple shoot). Lucerne excursion with guided walk Located about an hour scenic drive along the lakeshore is the “Lion city” of Lucerne. En-route you will stop at the Lion monument before entering the city for a short guided walking tour which will take in the city walls and the famous Chapel Bridge. Free time will be given at your leisure before returning to the hotel to relax and change for the Gala New Years Eve celebrations. Engelberg excursion A later start and relaxed breakfast is planned today for the Engelberg excursion. Engelberg is the home of the ski jump championships and Monastery famous for its own cheese. Why not enjoy a cheese fondue or ride to the top of Mt Titlis (over 10,000ft) via the panoramic rotating cable car. Boat cruise on Lake Lucerne After breakfast you will board a private boat for a cruise along Lake Lucerne to finish off a wonderful New Years break. Midnight champagne and fireworks display See in the New Year with Champagne and live music in the Ballroom and then adjourn to the hotel terrace to watch a magnificent firework display launched from a boat on the lake. The colours sparkle and reflect on the snow covered peaks and the explosive sounds ricochet across the cliffs and mountains. You will also see fireworks all around from the other lakeside villages. A truly marvellous heralding in of the New Year! Hotels Waldstätterhof The four-star Hotel Waldstätterhof in Brunnen has a 140-year-old tradition as a first class hotel on the shore of Lake Lucerne. Its guests have included Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill, current royalty and political figures. It has recently been modernised, but still retains original features and its turn of the century charm. The hotel facilities include sauna, steam and spa and games/billiard room. Wi-Fi is available in the public areas of the hotel and is free of charge. When open, guests have free use of an indoor pool approximately 500 metres away. Your room: You will have a spacious room with what the Swiss term as a ‘queen sized’ bed (One metre and 40 cm wide) to yourself for the four night stay at the hotel on a half board basis. The rooms come equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, direct dial telephones, TV, safes. Irons and ironing boards are available to use on each floor of the hotel. Hotel bathrooms: Your hotel room bathroom will be equipped with shower cubicle (no baths) with hairdryer, shampoo, and shower gel. Do note that bathrobes and slippers are not provided.
