COLLEGE OF THE ARTS
WELCOME
As a leader in public school education we are instrumental
in providing quality education for your child. Our students
come here for their love of the arts and use their creativity,
innovation and imagination to enhance their academic
performance.
Being recognised as the 2016 Western Australian Secondary
School of the Year and also the winner of the Western Australian
Governor’s Award for Leadership in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics shows us how building critical and
creative thinking, and communication and collaborative skills in our
students puts them at the cutting edge of educational innovation.
It also shows us what can be achieved when students, teachers and
parents all work in partnership.
Continuing our 2016 success, 66 of our Year 12 students received
School Curriculum and Standards Authority Awards recognising
excellence and we were in the top performing schools for eight
Stage 3 WACE courses.
It is a privilege to work with students who display respect,
intelligence and the ability to show care and compassion towards
others.

MESSAGE FROM OUR
DEAN OF THE ARTS
A school can judge its success on the graduates who
leave. The very nature of the arts instils in people passion,
creativity and social understanding that makes our
students confident communicators, innovative thinkers and
compassionate citizens.
Our goal as arts educators is to enable all students to have the
choice of future directions, whether that is pursuing a career in
the arts industry, or gaining success in a different field, while
maintaining their passion and love of the arts. It is the arts that
have helped shape them as people.
It is important to acknowledge where we have come from as
a college and reflect on our journey especially following our
success as the 2016 Secondary School of the Year. Remarkably
we have been operating as an educational institution for more
than 170 years. Fremantle Free Grammar School opened on
22 June 1846 and later became Fremantle Boys and Princess
May before these combined to become John Curtin Senior
High School in 1954. We have a proud history of innovative
change, reflection and celebration of excellence. Our recent
history shows our change into Western Australia’s only selective
arts college for gifted and talented students, unique to our
State and to our nation.
2
JOHN CURTIN COLLEGE OF THE ARTS
As staff, students and parents we have collective ownership
on this recognition. Even though our school community spans
the whole of the metropolitan area from Quinns Rock in the
north to Mandurah in the south and across to Gooseberry Hill
in the east, along with our boarders from regional areas, we
come together to acknowledge our community and continue
to innovate and reflect as we celebrate excellence through our
college performances, screenings and exhibitions.
So it is fitting to acknowledge this journey and celebrate the
iconic, the traditional and the contemporary arts through 78
scheduled events. We look forward to inspiring you with our
senior music theatre production of The Wizard of Oz along with
provoking thought and reflecting on society past and present
with our senior drama piece The Irresistible Rise of Arturo Oi
by Bertold Brecht. Our contemporary dance students take the
traditional classic, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream,
to create a magic movement scape and our ballet students
finish the year with Sleeping Beauty. Our music students
showcase their talents in many forms from intimate solos to
symphony orchestra and you will also experience our visual arts
and media students’ creative pursuits, not only in scheduled
exhibitions and screenings, but in our Curtin Theatre gallery
throughout the 2017 performance season.

A WILDE
NIGHT OUT
YEAR 12 – ACT 2, EPILOGUE
Year 12 Guest Director Season
Oscar Wilde is one of Ireland’s greatest, if
not most humorous exports. Many today
know the controversial, flamboyant and
debonair Victorian dramatist through his
works The Picture of Dorian Gray and
The Importance of Being Earnest. Larger
than life, Wilde was a poet, dramatist,
author and celebrity, donning many quite
fashionable hats. His work and spirit are
as relevant, witty and alive as ever 112
years after his death. This evening is a
celebration of some of his works as well
as the man behind the plays.

THE RESISTIBLE RISE
OF ARTURO UI
YEARS 10, 11 AND 12
Senior Drama
Think Al Capone meets Richard III and you have the American
gangster movie The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, in Bertolt
Brecht’s allegorical satire. The play explores Adolf Hitler’s
rise to power and is filtered through the story of a bunch of
hoodlums attempting to take over the cauliflower trade in
1930s Chicago. They eventually annex the market in nearby
Cicero too. Replace Cicero
with Austria and consider
an extended Monty Python
sketch with Shakespearean
tragedy thrown in for an
evening of surprises. The
final, chilling moments
remind us that this is no
laughing matter.

THE BEAUTIFUL WORD
YEARS 7 TO 10
The Beautiful Word is an original piece of theatre devised by
a young cast spanning Years 7 to 10. This show continues the
collaborative nature of The Beautiful Game, which was performed
at the Curtin Theatre in 2014 with the involvement of all lower
school students from the gifted and talented and soccer programs
and local students. The Beautiful Word is a celebration of spoken
word poetry as an art form, which has always told honestly and
personally of the human condition, ultimately demanding the
need for protest and for change. In the beginning is the WORD
and the word has POWER.
