MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Board of the Vernon Public Art Gallery,
welcome to Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts, an event that
is both the highlight of the year for fundraising for the
Art Gallery and also a favorite summer soirée for the
art-loving social set in the North Okanagan. We are
very pleased to be able to showcase the work of local
artists in both live and silent auctions and invite you to
add these original pieces to your private collection while
supporting the Vernon Public Art Gallery at the same
time. The organizers of the event have done an amazing job in putting
the event together, and as always it promises to be a fun evening and a
great opportunity to show support for the community and show off our
local cultural vibrancy and vitality. Cheers!
Andrew Powell, President
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Summer sun, live music, refreshments, beautiful art and
a lively auction all located on a stunning vista overlooking
Vernon combine to make a magical evening for this year’s
Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts. As the primary fundraiser
for the Vernon Public Art Gallery, I encourage you to dig
deep and have fun with our live and silent auctions. We
have a great selection this year thanks to the generosity
of our local artists and businesses. As a hub for the arts
in Greater Vernon, the VPAG relies on your continued
support to provide the ongoing programming and operations that help
to create that artistic vibrancy in our community. A strong art gallery
encourages the creative and critical discourse that is so important to all
aspects of our personal and business lives. So, jump in, bid generously
and take home a work of art that can inspire your creativity! Thank you
to everyone who has contributed to this evening’s event and to those of
you who are in attendance tonight.
Sincerely,
Dauna Kennedy Grant, Executive Director

This male Stradivarius expression exemplifies his overwhelming emotion.
Possibly he is mesmerized by the music he produces or perhaps he is

magical power of harmonies of the body and its expression. Our new
technologies and domestic or planetary concerns often distract us from
our love and lust for life. Creating aesthetics that help regain and retain
the strength and importance in our emotional expression and wellbeing
is of the uppermost importance in contemporary art.

Endellion is a new variety and was launched at the 2015 Chelsea Flower

paintings. Nature is ever evolving and changing, much like our own lives. Life itself would not survive without the intricate cycles of nature, which
today are often taken for granted. My calling as a botanical artist is to
capture the beauty and diversity of nature in watercolour and connect
people with the fascinating and often fragile world of plants.”

Delta Series: Alluvial Plane
mixed media on Fabriano
I find it an interesting exercise to deconstruct a work after completing,
in this case, a drawing. Experimenting with scale and composition, I have
printed these areas onto transparencies. This affords an opportunity to
flip or mirror an idea against itself with other visual elements discovered
in the deconstructing of the original image. These works are joined
under the title The Delta Series, as they have originated from a 30x40
inch graphite drawing, which is of one of the many beautiful deltas found
on the traditional territories of the Okanagan First Nations Land on the
Westside.

Represents the four elements of nature… Earth, Water, Air, and Fire.
In classical thought, Earth was commonly associated with qualities of

Untitled (Head-Like Shape #1), marble bust series
oil & acrylic on canvas
This painting is from a series where I took walks at night in remote areas
of the Okanagan as a method of visual research. My intention was to
explore the connection between abstraction and darkness. On these
walks I’d often bring a large portable battery and a spotlight in order to
both see and to distort the landscape. These paintings began to take on a
‘head-like’ shape as they echoed the pool of illuminated light.
