The Royal Canadian Legion
Prince Edward Island Command
Message from The President
This is a very eventful year for The Royal Canadian Legion. We have marked the End of an Era with the
passing of our last known Veteran of World War I. We have also celebrated the 65th Anniversary of VE
Day and the 100th Anniversary of our Navy.
To the many Canadians who so willingly went to war and sacrificed their lives and the Veterans who were
fortunate to return, we can never thank you enough. We also thank our Peacetime service men and
women who have served, and are still serving, around the world so we can enjoy the life we enjoy today.
I also wish to thank all those who have participated in the making of this booklet to commemorate some
of our Veterans who have served us so willingly.
On behalf of the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island Command, The Royal Canadian Legion, I
wish to express my gratitude to all of those who have made our commemorative booklet a success.
Revenues from the production of this booklet will ensure that Prince Edward Island Command can carry
on with serving our Veterans, Seniors and Youth programs into the future.

In 2008 the Royal Canadian Legion, Tignish
Branch #6, PEI coordinated an effort to plant
maple trees to honor Veterans. In 2009 a
committee was struck to create a Veteran’s
memorial garden. With the support of
families, community and Legion members
young and old, the memorial garden was
completed and an official opening took place
July 1, 2010. A memorial monument pictured
on the front cover was erected in the garden
along with an iron gate leading into the
garden. The entire effort took hundreds of
volunteer hours and was truly a team effort.

Victoria Cross Recipient
Capt. Frederick Thornton Peters
Oran, North Africa
November 8, 1942
Royal Navy
Frederick Thornton Peters was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on the 17th of September 1889, son
of the Attorney General and the first Liberal Premier of that province. He was educated at St. Peter’s Private
School, later went to school in Victoria, British Columbia, and from there to Naval School in England. He graduated
as a midshipman and three years later he received his commission as a sub-lieutenant. During the First World War
he was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order, the first ever given to a Canadian, and the Distinguished
Service Cross for gallantry in action. Following the action which won him the Victoria Cross, he was proceeding to
England when the plane he was in crashed and he was killed. He has no known grave but his name appears on
the Naval Memorial at Portsmouth, England.
Citation
“Captain Peters was in the ‘suicide charge’ by two little cutters at Oran. Walney and Hartland were two ex-American
coastguard cutters which were lost in a gallant attempt to force the boom defences in the harbour of Oran during
the landings on the North African coast. Captain Peters led his force through the boom in the face of point-blank
fire from shore batteries, destroyer and a cruiser - a feat which was described as one of the great episodes of naval
history. The Walney reached the jetty disabled and ablaze, and went down with her colours flying. Blinded in one
eye, Captain Peters was the only survivor of the seventeen men on the bridge of the Walney. He was taken
prisoner but was later released when Oran was captured. On being liberated from the gaol, he was carried through
the streets where the citizens hailed him with flowers. He won the D.S.O. and D.S.C. in the last war. He was born
in 1889.”

TRaINOR, Hugh Charles “Charlie”
– Distinguised Flying Cross & Bar
– Distinguished Service Order
Charlie was born in Charlottetown, PEI on July 17, 1916. He enlisted with the
Royal Canadian Air Force in Moncton, NB on February 16, 1940. He trained
in Canada and Britain as a fighter pilot and later as Commander of a Canadian
squadron. He was awarded the DFC in August of 1944, after shooting down
five enemy planes in a short period. By October, he had nine planes and won
the Bar to the DFC. He evaded capture the first time he was forced to land
behind German lines, but was not so lucky the second time. He was reported
missing on September 19, 1944. He was freed in April 1945, and was
awarded the DSO for his leadership in commanding a Canadian fighter
squadron, which destroyed 385 enemy vehicles in three weeks. Charlie
passed away on July 4, 2004.

Soldier’s Medal
Charles was born in Charlottetown, PEI on January 17, 1917. He joined the
Merchant Marines at age 16. Shortly thereafter, he emigrated to the United
States to live with his older brother in Boston, Massachusetts. When living
with his brother, he joined the U.S. Army in January 1942. While in boot camp,
he was asked if he wanted to become a U.S. citizen. He decided that if he was
going to fight for the United States that he should be U.S. citizen.
Harry S. Truman, President of the
United States, presenting Charles
MacGillivary with Congressional
Medal of Honour on August 25,
1945.
MacGillvary’s first wartime action came during the Battle of Normandy, landing
on Omaha Beach in 1944. From Omaha Beach, he was involved in numerous
liberation conflicts throughout France, before reaching Woelfling during the
Battle of the Bulge. On January 1, 1945, during this battle, his unit was
surrounded by the 17th German Panzer Grenadier Division, MacGillivary, then
27, picked up a machine gun and knocked out four German machine gun
nests, killing 36 German soldiers. During this action, he lost his left arm. It was
for this action that he received the United States Medal of Honour “for
conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and
beyond the call of duty.”
Charles passed away on June 24, 2000 in Brockton, Massachusetts.

THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other
cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and
said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the
throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."
Author unknown
Prayer for Our Soldiers
"Lord, hold our troops in your loving
hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless
acts they perform for us in our time
of need.
I ask Lord.
Amen."

Forget Them Not
We’ve lined their boots all in a row,
And amongst them stand,
The saddest scene I’ll ever know,
Goodbye dear friend, goodbye!
Through mud and rain and battle blows,
We cried cursed prayers,
On blood-soaked clothes;
And from that wound his life did flow,
Please stay we begged, please stay!
There is a time that soldiers know,
When so many die,
That the pain and woe,
Is too much for the mind to hold;
Roll on your drums, roll on!
A band of brothers stand in their rows;
The empty boots still,
Where a life did grow,
Our friends have gone, no more to know;
Remember them always, remember!

The Staff and Residents at the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial
Lodge would like to commend The Royal Canadian Legion on
this War Time Service Recognition Booklet - Volume Six.
It is significant that we remember the mission of The Royal
Canadian Legion in years to come.
It should remind us of the great
sacrifices many men and women made
in order to protect our great country
during times of war.
