PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY ELOISE CARSON
Spring into Summer
The Latin name for June is Junius, named
after the Roman goddess Juno, the goddess
of marriage and the wife of the supreme deity
Jupiter. Juno is connected with the idea of
vital force, fullness of vital energy and eternal
youthfulness, which is fitting as we celebrate
the Summer Solstice on June 21st. The long
days of summer seem full of energy and
vitality. The late evenings allow me to
enjoy one of my favorite summer activities:
playing in an evening two ball with friends
and enjoying dinner on the patio.
A June holiday I enjoy celebrating is
Father’s Day, this year on the 19th. I read
that Father’s Day was first celebrated in
Spokane, Washington in 1910. I’m very
fortunate that my father, John Carson, is still
alive and in excellent health. At the age of 88,
he still runs and cross-country skis. However,
he recently decided that bike riding was too
risky, and he gave away his bikes. Early on
in my life, he instilled in me a love of the
outdoors. He took my sister and me hiking,
backpacking, snow skiing, ski racing,
water skiing, swimming and biking. It never
occurred to Jenny and me that there was an
outdoor activity in which we could not equally
participate. My 15 years younger brother,
Lance Woodbury, benefited from the exclusive
attention he received from our dad after my
sister and I were out of the house and has excelled at many sports, including golf, although
that was one sport which our dad did not play.
While there is some mixed opinion on our
new dress code, I think we’ll all be in
agreement that there is one June holiday in
which PGC will NOT participate. Friday, June
17th is International Be Naked Day. I trust
none of you will choose to celebrate this day
at PGC! (Who comes up with these days
anyhow?) Speaking of proper attire, the dress
code has been an ongoing issue ever since I’ve
been a member. Often, guests don’t know the
proper attire or members ignore it or don’t
remember it. To get our new dress code policy
off on the right start, the Board has asked the
staff to strongly enforce the policy. This isn’t
just about denim. The issues range from shirts
tucked in to wearing the proper cover-up outside of the pool area. If a staff member needs
to remind you of proper attire, please accept
their comments with good grace. They are just
doing the job we’ve asked them to do. Read
and follow the new dress code!
One of the most important aspects of
Portland Golf Club is the high degree of
respect we, as members, show to our fellow
members, to our staff, to the golf course and
to the clubhouse. Fortunately, since I’ve been
on the Board, we’ve only had two incidents
that required the Board to remind individual
members of this and to reprimand them. In
both instances, alcohol was a primary driver
of the behavior. I mention this as a reminder
to everyone of the need to be respectful and
to use common sense. We are all joint owners
of a beautiful facility, and we need to treat our
co-owners, and the property, as we would wish
to be treated. In both circumstances, I was
proud to be part of the two Boards that took
the situations very seriously, gave the offenders
a chance to be heard, and came to reasonable
decisions.
Here’s to our fathers. I wish them all a joyful
Father’s Day.
Email Communication sent on Saturday, May 14, 2016
Dear Members,
Attached is the revised Portland Golf Club dress policy, which will go into effect May 27, 2016. The most significant change is that denim will be allowed
in the clubhouse (but still not on the golf course). We assure you that this decision was not taken lightly and that the Board vote was unanimous to
make the change. We reviewed the many comments regarding denim from the recent survey. There were very strong feelings on both sides of the issue,
but the overwhelming majority strongly favored allowing denim and most view it as an important and positive development for the club as a whole.
Over the years the concept of what is acceptable business and social attire has evolved. To remain relevant as a top golf club, the Board feels we must
evolve as well. We believe that this change, if executed with the spirit that “the dress policy is a reflection of the etiquette and high standards expected
by all members” will be successful and ultimately result in increased use of the clubhouse and drive an increase in revenues generated by both the bar
and restaurant.
Members are reminded to continue to consider common sense and respect for tradition in selecting their attire. Clothing that is frayed, tattered, and/or
otherwise in distressed or worn-out condition is not acceptable; this applies to denim as well.
We will continue to monitor the adherence to the revised policy and will make adjustments as are deemed necessary in order to continue to uphold the
high standards of Portland Golf Club.
Eloise Carson, President

Portland Golf Club
June 2016
Dress Policy
The dress policy is a reflection of the etiquette and high standards expected
by all members as they and their guests enjoy Portland Golf Club. Suitable attire
is required to be worn at all times. Members are encouraged to consider common
sense, respect for tradition, modesty, and the comfort level of fellow Members
when choosing their attire. It is expected that Club Members assume the
responsibility to inform their guests prior to their arrival regarding appropriate
attire. Those improperly dressed will be asked to change before enjoying the golf
course or the clubhouse and its facilities. The Board has delegated to the General
Manager, Food and Beverage Manager and Head Golf Professional the
responsibility to enforce the dress code via delegated staff.
GENERAL
The following types of clothing are not permitted at any time in the clubhouse and
its decks, in the Sandwedge, and all golfing areas: Clothing that is frayed, tattered,
and/or otherwise in distressed or worn-out condition; workout/gym attire; exposed
undergarments; clothing that exposes bare midriffs; casual crew neck tee shirts;
tank tops; halter tops; cut-off shorts; short shorts; and swimwear.
Men’s Hats: Hats or visors for men are not permitted in the main clubhouse, card
room and the covered section of the outdoor clubhouse deck. Hats must be worn
in the conventional manner (not reversed).

The greens healed well post aeration, and the vertical-mowing/top dressing program has begun.
Vertical mowing reduces organic matter (decaying roots and tissue) while standing up the turf for an
upright growth and improved quality of cut. Top dressing reduces organic matter and smooths the surface
of irregularities such as ball marks. This program is performed every two weeks on Mondays, weather and
schedule permitting.

Summer Fun at PGC
The reason most of you joined Portland Golf Club is upon us--the busy summer season. With this comes the
opening of the pool and the Sandwedge. This is also by far the busiest time of the year for the dining room.
To ensure that the members coming into the dining room get the service that they deserve, we are implementing
new policies for the summer.
• Poolside dining will be available through the Splash. Orders may be placed through the main kitchen, except
during dinner hours.
AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE
BY JAMES WARREN,
FOOD & BEVERAGE MANAGER
• We will fill ‘to go’ orders on dinner
nights when they are placed before
6:00 p.m. or after 8:00 p.m. In order
to accommodate our diners, we
cannot offer ‘to go’ service during
peak hours.
The beautiful summer weather
makes our decks extremely popular
this time of year. We will have the same guidelines we had last season:
Survivor
Pool Party
Ages 9 - 13
•The upper deck under cover may be reserved for lunch or dinner.
•The lower deck will be on a first come, first served basis.
Please be respectful of those members who have reserved deck tables ahead
of time. Thank you for being aware of other members dining when using the
lower deck by maintaining a quiet noise level so everyone may enjoy their
meals.
PGC is a wonderful place to bring the family in the summer. While
we are a family friendly club, we must insist that children are not left
unsupervised. In the Clubhouse, pool, and definitely the golf course,
children must abide by PGC rules and policies.
As always, we ask that the membership make reservations when at all
possible. This really helps the kitchen and the wait staff know what to
expect. It would also be a great help if large parties who would like the bill
split up amongst multiple members alert the server upon arrival. This will
help to avoid billing problem later.

Graduation is upon us, and have you noticed that everyone is
