Second Grade Gazette Newsletter
March 2017
Parent(s),
Spring is upon us, so take advantage of any opportunity to
point out signs of spring: leaves and flowers beginning to appear; birds returning,
longer days; and warmer temperatures. This can help your child’s understanding of
life cycles and seasons.
During this time of the year, students tend to lose the routine of reading every
day. We encourage you to help with maintaining homework routines and have your
child read daily in English and in Spanish.

SOLs’: Comprehension/Fiction: 2.8 (g-i), Comprehension/nonfiction 2.9 (a/b),
Composition and written expression 2.12, 2.13 (e-i), 2.14- using technology
for reading and writing. 2.8 (e) Poetry
Our theme for language arts is “Dream Big.” The stories focus on using our
imagination and creativity. Comprehension skills include answering and asking
questions and re-reading to better understand. We also are focusing on the
main idea of what we are reading in Fiction and Nonfiction. We will also
continue to talk about using reference sources. In addition, students will
write stories, letters, and simple explanations to support their composition
and written expression.
We are also working on Poetry in Reading and in Writing. Students will be
exposed to many forms of poetry and will begin writing their own poems.
Social Studies
SOLs’ Economics: 2.7, 2.8, 2.9
Vocabulary words: climate, environment, natural resource, human resource,
capital resource, goods, services, scarcity, needs, wants, barter, trade,
producer, consumer
Math
Math SOLs:
SOL 2.15ab (Symmetry in figures); 2.3abc (Fractions - halves, thirds,
fourths, sixths, eights, and tenths; comparing fractions); 2.18 (Use data
from experiments to predict outcomes when the experiment is repeated)
During this month the students will learn about symmetry. With these
concepts in mind, we will transition to learning about fractions. Students will
be able to identify fractions and eventually compare them. Towards the end
of the month students will integrate science and math skills to make
predictions regarding an experiment’s data.
Spanish-Language Arts
This month the students will work on comprehension strategies
(details, characters, inferences, predictions), as well as on listening
comprehension. In addition, the students will compare and contrast, use
plural forms, and continue to use adjectives. The students also will
continue to work on their writing skills; they will write descriptive
paragraphs and use the writing process (brain storming, drafting, editing
and reviewing) to write a new story.

Inglés
Nuestro tema para la asignatura de inglés es “Soñar en Grande”. Nos
enfocaremos en historias que tratan de usar nuestra imaginación y
creatividad. Destrezas para la comprensión incluyen responder y hacer
preguntas y volver a leer para comprender mejor. También hablaremos sobre
cómo utilizar referencias. Luego, los estudiantes podrán escribir cuentos,
cartas, y explanaciones simples para apoyar su composición y expresión
escrita. We are also working on Poetry in Reading and in Writing. Students
will be exposed to many forms of poetry and will begin writing their own
poems.
Estudios Sociales
Vocabulario:
Matemáticas
SOL 2.15ab (simetría en figuras planas);
2.3abc (Fracciones – comparar fracciones);
2.18 (Usar data de experimentos para hacer predicciones)
Durante este mes los estudiantes aprenderán cómo encontrar la línea de
simetría en figuras planas. Luego, harán la conexión de que la simetría está
relacionada con fracciones. Aprenderán a identificar fracciones simples y
cómo compararlos. Cerca al fin del mes los estudiantes aprenderán a usar
data de experimentos científicos para hacer predicciones.
Español
Durante el mes de marzo los estudiantes trabajarán en estrategias de
comprensión (detalles, características, inferencias y predicciones). También
trabajaremos en la comprensión oral. Los estudiantes también podrán
comparar y contrastar. Seguiremos practicando las formas plurales y el
uso de adjetivos. En escritura, seguiremos trabajando en añadir detalles a
párrafos descriptivos, y a la vez, podrán utilizar el proceso de escritura
(lluvia de ideas, hacer un borrador, editar y publicar).
