Cooper, now three years-old,

With a mom and dad who are

will not end up with a collectionof

symptoms get worse for a brief time, followed by an
abrupt, lasting improvement.

Respondingto the mom's question
You have already answered the most important
question: Is there a link betweenmy child's behavioral
problemsand what sheis eating? Yes!
Your secondquestion:Will you do just as well if you
only cut out the dyes, and do not remove the other
additives or natural salicylates? Probably not. It's
highly unlikely tlat your daughter'ssensitivitywould be
limited to just the dyes. The samepetrochemicals
that
are usedto make dyes are the basisfor BHA, BHT and
TBHQ. Petroleumis widely usedin syntheticflavorings,
and is the main ingredient in fragrancesof all types from the perfume in laundry detergentto the expensive
brandssold in upscaledepartmentstores.
The FeingoldProgramin the 1970's
Before there was a Feingold Association,a Handbook, a Foodlist, etc., familieswere on their own. We
engagedin a lot of trial-and-error,and madeplenty of
mistakes, but despit€them, many of us were fortunate
enoughto seedramaticimprovements.Someof us saw
positive changesafter removing only a few of the
additives. We quickly becameaccustomed
to the better
behavior,but later other (lessdramaiic)problemsbecame
apparent. No, our children weren't destroyingthings
anymore, but they were often crabby,or cried easily, or
still had rouble getting to sleep, or continuedto have
nroblemswith their schoolwork.
Taking away the rest of the culprits
A furury thing happenedas we beganto "settle in"
to the Feingold routine. It stopped being so difficult!
After spendingso much time and energyfying to control
our unguidedmissiles (target children), it was a relief to
find that we could turn a portion of that energy to
making some changesin our grocery shopping, and that
the effort really paid off. Gradually, the changesin our
food becameroutine, while the positive changesin our
children continued. We now had the energy and desire
to remove other additives and the salicylates. Some of
us would go on to avoid corn syrup, or MSG, or sodium
benzoate or nitrites. Each time we identified and
removed another culprit we saw a new, higher level of
responsein our kids.
We have tried to make it easyfor you
The program package is designed so tlnt a new
member can run a fairly pure test, and see positive
changesas quickly as possible. But if you don't feel
you're ready to tackle it yet you can still use the
materials to help you ease into the Program. The
importantthing to rememberis this:
A dye-ftee program is not
the same thing as the
Feingold Program. If you
make only somechangesand
do not see results, please
don't assume that the
Feingold Program "doesn't
work."
Set your own pace
Startwith removingdyes, if you like. It's surprisingly
easyto do. Then, when you are ready to take the next
step, considereliminatinganotler categoryof additives,
or temporarily removing the nahlral salicylates.
(Summertimeis a good time to be on Stage One since
there afe so many melons in season.) Your comfort
level is important. If you make these changesover a
period of months, and there is no compellingreasonto
speedthingsup, that's fine.
Sometimesthe FeingoldProgram is just
the first step
Even parents who follow the Program to the letter
sometimesdon't see improvementuntil they identifo and
remove other things that are setting their child off. See
the article on page 6 about the mom who found that the
biggestoffendersfor her child were gluten and casein.
However long it takes to remove harmful
chemicals, your efforts will pay off in a
lifetime of benefitsfor your child.
Prur.eFactslMay 2005 3
Complianceon the FeingoldProgram: t00V" or not?
Onceyou have becomeestablishedon the Programand your child understandshow he feels
(and behaves)when he skips the additivesvs. how he feels (and behaves)when he eatsthem,
it's time to considercompliance.
fhere are as many parentingtechniquesas thereare
I oarents-and there is no hard and fast rule about
compliance; but most families who are successfulwith
Feingold have settled in on roughly the following
approach. The food in the home is "Feingold-friendly."
Disgusted by what they have learned about synthetic
chpmicaladditives, both Mom and Dad refuse to pay
good money for inferior products. If the child has a
salicylatesensitivity,they use thosefruits and vegetlbles
that are tolerated. When they travel they do thet best to
stick with the Program. The challenge comes when a
child is away ftom home and is offered foods with the
unwanted additives. Should parents attempt to prevent
their child from eating such contraband? Most parents
say "no" but with reservations.
How serious are the
consequences?
If you're dealing with a lifethreateningpeanut allergy, there's
no room for compromise. But if
the reaction is likely to be less
serious,that's a differentissue.
Even young children are usually
able to be placed in charge of their
own decisionswhen it comes to
eating something with the chemicals that will trigger a reacion.
One mom explainedher approach
in this wav:
"While I agreethat following the diet 100%will give
the bestresults,I alsobelievein allowingmy childrento
choose(within reason)what is bestfor them and to learn
ftom their mistakes. This doesn't mean that I will let
them do thingsthat are dangerous, but it doesmeanthat
I let them choosetheir diet. But. with that choice comes
the consequences
of that choice, which I will not soften
or remove. My reasoningbehind this is simple. Kids
needto learn to make good choicesand they do this by
trial and error. Obviously,this philosophydoesn'tapply
to anythingthat could harmthem.
"In our case, the diet does help my son to keep on
task. He is more kind and less emotionalwhen he sticks
to it. We have found that he can 'cheat' on certain
things and it doesn'taffect him. And somethings only
affect him if he has it several days in a row. For
instance,he chose to eat a brightly colored taffylike
4 Pul'e FactslMav 2005
candy one day. No ill effects. The next day he tried
some more and it did affect him. This has taught him
that if he is 'clean' for a certain amountof time, he can
'cheat' occasionally for sornething special - like the
Valentine's party coming up at school. And then I will
also enphasize that he should have only one
item. This puts him in charge, lets him
non-approved
makethe decisions,and hopefullywill teachhim while
he is young the negative effects that some things can
have on the body. It also makes him 'own' the
from
responsibility, and he knows that any consequences
not following it are of his own making(i.e.. he hasto
stayin his room if he is beingunkindto his family).
"While I do not stick to the Foodlist 100%,
everything in my house reads 'clean' (no artificials
we are
listed on the label).
constantly testing new it€ms, and he
knows that if he has a reaction to it,
we will not buy it again. This is an
incentiveto stay on the things that he
knows are o.k., becausecheatingon
somethingelse may mean getting rid
of an item that would havebeeno.k.
had he not cheated."
"My goal is for my son to
chooseto do the dret100%."
Parent'sChoice
Allowing your child to make choicesdoesn't mean
you haveto buy things you disapproveof. Another mom
wrote: "My 6 ll2 year-oldson askedto eat off Feingold
only 1 or 2 times the entire seven days we were at
Disney World. When I told him no, he didn't have a
tantrum, he just said, "Ohhh, I wish they had somegood
popcornthat I could have." End of discussionand on to
the next event. I was very oroud of him."

children. It is sponsoredby the San Diego Nutrition

French fiies do not need to be the only side dish
offered to children, and a handful of San Diego
restaurantsnow give families the option of things like
carrot & celery sticks, mashedpotatoes, beans, corn on
the cob, and even steamedbroccoli. Yes, kids are eating
andenjoyingall of them.
You do have choices
Most "eat-in" restaurants iue accustomed to
accommodatingthe special needsand preferencesof their
adultdiners;they can do the samefor children. Ask you
waiter to provide a salad, or some raw vegetables,or
fruits, or applesauce,or whatevernourishingfood your
child enjoys,in placeof the fries.
Skip the child's meal. Most adultportionstodayare so
large there will be more than enough food for both a
parentand a youngchild.
National chains
Ruby Tuesday's and l)enny's have announcedtheir
plans to offer healthieroptions for children. Wendy's
fruit cup has been a welcome innovation for many
families, and McDonald's hasplans to offer a fresh fruit
saladthis month. McDonald'shas alreadytried to jump
on the healthy food bandwagonwith their apple slices, a
healthy option, but they spoil it all with an artificially
flavored carameldip. If you order the apples,be sure
you skip the dip!

Panera provides detailed information on

Representatives at the Panera

their pan sprays/oils are not preservedwith BHA, BHT or TBHQ.
Many breads (with the exception of
the Holiday Bread) look like good

Check their web site (www. panerabread.com)
for
details on the various additives used in their other
foods. If you are avoiding MSG or com syrup, read
carefully to avoid the additives that are look-alikes.
Nitrites and smoke flavoring are used in many of the
sandwichmeats. Most of the muffins. cookies. and
