Welcome to Hobbs,
Mr. Underwood!
Greetings Jaguars,
I want to tell you a little about your new Principal, Wes Underwood.
First, I am so proud to have been selected as the new Principal of Hobbs Middle School. I am honored to work
with so many great teachers and students. I want you to know that I have high expectations of every teacher, staff
member, and student at Hobbs Middle School. We are going to continue our tradition of excellence both academically
and behaviorally at Hobbs. My philosophy of education is simple: Achievement! Our students will achieve things they
never believed they could. To accomplish this goal our teachers and students will strive for excellence every day. We will
expect our students to work hard each and every day and we will provide them with quality lessons and a safe learning
environment. My office is always open to anyone who wishes to sit down to discuss Hobbs Middle School. We are here to
provide the best education possible for your students and that cannot occur without communication.
I was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. I attended school here in 2nd grade for one year, moved away and
returned in 6th grade. We have a wonderful community and as I grew older I knew this is where I wanted to live. My family
lives off of Avalon Boulevard just a short distance from Hobbs Middle School. Lisa, my wife, is a Second Grade Teacher
at East Milton Elementary. I have two children, Lyla age 11 and Zachary age 22. Lyla is in the 6th grade and my son is a
Junior in college. I could not be more proud of my two children. They are both good people who have good morals and
value education.
This is my 18th year serving in the Santa Rosa County School System. My Bachelors of Arts degree is in Middle
Grades Math and Science Education. I hold a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Management. My
certifications are in Middle Grades Mathematics and Science, Physical Education, Educational Leadership and the
Principalship. My career has allowed me to serve is several positons. They are Teacher, Technology Coordinator,
Assistant Principal, and Coordinator of Mathematics and Science all in Santa Rosa County. I taught Intensive
Mathematics (7th and 8th), 8th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I Honors, and Integrated Science. I also served as a
Dean of Students for 6½ years. Currently, I am in my 7th year of administration. I absolutely love my career. There is
nothing that I would rather do than work with parents, teachers, and students. During my teaching career I have been
blessed with the opportunity to coach several sports. I coached Cross Country, Softball, Baseball, Basketball and
Football over the years.
I am a sports fan and avid athlete. I still love competing. My favorite sport is basketball, but I also enjoy baseball and
football. I played all there at some point in high school. My favorite college football team is FSU and I root for the Dallas
Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and the Texas Rangers professionally. I look forward to seeing our students in action in
various parks. If a student invites me to come watch and I am available I will be there to see them compete.
Again, I am very happy to be at Hobbs Middle School. I plan to stay for a very long time.
Go Jaguars!

Mrs. Blake would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to
her 5th TB Reading Class, the winner of the 2015 READ
TO SUCCEED contest. During the contest, this
awesome bunch worked tirelessly in earning the most
points on average, per student, schoolwide in
our Achieve3000 reading program. Mrs. Blake will be
celebrating with her students during their upcoming
Pizza Party Celebration from Dominos! Way to go
Kiddos!
Keep making those reading gains! 
Mr. Parazine’s students took the
Microsoft Office Word certification
exam, which means they are officially
Microsoft Office Specialists in Word
if they passed. He had 85 students
pass and Preston Randolph, Nate
Waters, and Vaneesa Filios all three
made a perfect score 

Sammi and
Sara want you
to know how
important
“creativity” is…
Makerspace is happening in the media center, every
Monday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 7:45-8:20 and every Tues, Wed, Thurs afternoon from 2:31-3:00.
Makerspaces are essentially “centers” designed for exploration, invention, creation, and learning. They change as
needed when interest wanes or supplies are totally consumed.
During December in addition to our Lego and Construction Set kits, students also made Christmas Ornaments using
strips of paper, crayons, glitter, and yarn. Mrs. Trease and Mrs. Odom’s classes also came to use the
Makerspace. Each student made a custom ornament and everyone had a good time. (Mrs. Lambert has pictures.) Our
library received a $1,000 SREF Teacher Grant for “Robotics in the Library” which includes a MOSS Exofabulatronixx
5200 robotics kit and an iPad mini 2 that will be used in the makerspace area of the library. It will be introduced
through the science classes and then will become a permanent part of the Makerspace in the library.
We also received a grant for $2138.69 from the Professional Development Center for our makerspace. I have
purchased some of the new materials which include Lego and K’nex robot kits, duct tape, Makey Makey, 2 more MOSS
robot kits, circuitry kit, as well as other miscellaneous supplies for crafts. The Legos will all be available next week and
the other items will be put out for students to use in the Makerspace as they are ready, with everything hopefully
available by the end of February. We are still in need of basic tools such as hammers, needle nose pliers, screwdrivers,
wire cutters, nails, screws and bolts, etc. along with office supplies like staplers, hole punchers, and scissors.
In preparation for SSA (Science), Mrs.
Ates is having her students do timed
readings of Science articles from the
Jamestown Readers. Their goal is
twofold:
1-To cut down on the amount of reading
time
2-To increase accuracy on the styles of
questions:
o
o
o
o
o
o
Recalling facts
Understanding main
ideas
Recognizing words in
context
Distinguishing fact
from opinion
Sequencing
Making correct
inferences
In the past, these activities have served my
students well.

th
Mr. Hall’s and Mrs. Jones’s 7 grade Civics Classes drafted and sent sponsor letters to community
businesses. These classes learn about the responsibilities of good citizens every day and put their
knowledge into practice.

to accept an
award for
Literacy
Week on
behalf of
Hobbs!
In only a few weeks, students at Hobbs Middle in Milton, Florida managed to coordinate efforts within their school and community to
raise over $500 to complete our Civics Literacy Project. Hobbs students involved in this effort realized that the elementary students
they were helping would one day walk the hallways of Hobbs Middle, too. Being able to provide new books for a student population that
struggles financially is at the heart of good citizenship, especially when many students at Hobbs know this struggle first-hand. Teachers
shed tears of joy, students smiled ear-to-ear, and ALL experienced the power of literacy. A good story and a good giggle make for a
lasting gift. Regardless of the contest results, Hobbs Middle is determined to change our world through a continued partnership with
young students in our district.
Hobbs Middle School won 1st place in the state Literacy
competition! Congratulations to Jessica Rowell and all the teachers,
assistants, and students involved in this great project! We are super
proud of you guys!

The City of Ember
Although not everyone
cares for The City of
Ember, it is making the
school more united. No
matter how different two
people from Hobbs may
be, they have something in
common, The City of
Ember. Anyone can talk
about the book. There is a
sense of companionship
with everyone now, and
that is a beautiful thing.
-Owen Reese
The City of Ember was a
very interesting story. All of
my teachers were
involved and enthusiastic
about the schoolwide
reading of this book.
-Sara Boles
A special “thank you” to Mrs. Wiscaver and Mrs. Rowell and all the faculty and staff who helped made
this a major success!
